Proposed Forum on Garden Ornaments

Peekskill, NY(Zone 6b)

I'd love to see a forum on garden ornaments and decor, since ornamentation is such an integral part of many gardens. For myself, I like to create a little drama with garden figures. For example, one rocky corner of my garden has a bronze fox looking up wistfully at a rooster perched six feet away, out of reach up on a rail.

This “scene” is adapted from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tale about a farmer's rooster, named Chanticleer (which in French means to sing clearly). In the story, Chanticleer is the “Don Juan” of the barnyard because of his beautiful voice and golden feathers. One day, he notices a fox watching him, and becomes wary. But the fox charms him with compliments, telling him not to be afraid. Chanticleer relishes the flattery as the fox coaxes him to sing some more. He's only too happy to oblige, so he beats his wings, stands on his toes, stretches his neck, closes his eyes, and begins to crow.

In a flash, the fox pounces and grabs Chanticleer by the throat. The farmer hears the screeching and spies the fox running off into the woods with the rooster in his jaws. The farmer’s dogs take to barking, and pretty soon the whole barnyard joins in the chase.

Thinking swiftly, Chanticleer cleverly suggests that the fox turn and taunt his pursuers by boasting of his catch. Liking the idea, the fox opens his mouth to do so, and Chanticleer flies out of the fox’s mouth up onto a perch high above him. Annoyed with himself for being so easily tricked, the fox tries to flatter the bird into coming back down. But Chanticleer has learned his lesson, and tells the fox that flattery will get him nowhere!

I recreated this vignette by situating the rooster up on a rail, about six feet out of reach of the fox!

My whole "barnyard" gets involved in chases like that every day. That's why I'm afraid to put out such great statuary as in your picture. I propped up my little cherub's broken head against his overturned body this morning. He's now part of the reliquary.

I'd love to see examples of others' garden ornaments. I plan on adding a lot this year (mosaics, hypertufa, and wood if I get to them all) and I'd be happy to entertain more ideas! A forum for it would be perfect.

Mikegene,

Ouch! I'm sure losing statuary like that must have hurt!

The fox is sufficiently life-like that it appears to have startled a passerby this week. I noticed a cat's paw prints in the snow that went right by the fox before coming to sudden stop and then disappearing! That must have been one startled kitty to leap so far away that it didn't even leave any "exit" tracks!

I sure like the idea. :D

How about you expand the forum to include design and landscaping aspects?

Peekskill, NY(Zone 6b)

I think there used to be a landscaping forum; it might be worth reviving. Although there is some overlap between ornamentation, statuary, architectural elements, and landscape designs, there are also some significant differences since landscaping is such a broad category.

Yes there was a landscaping forum. I was only thinking that to keep a forum going it's often good to include a few related elements so you can keep the interest going so it doesn't get archived. Then again it was only a suggestion.

Baa,

That's a good point!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I would love to see a forum on garden ornamentation!!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 5a)

I would love to see ornamentation as a forum also. I don't think the fox ate the rooster however, I think what happens is that the roosters older brothers came along and ripped into the fox. That I would love to see.

Well, now, that's certainly a different ending. I wonder what Chaucer would have to say!

Oh my gosh!! Would LOVE to have one of those dinos if I had a big, fenced in horse pasture. Sure would cause driver's to do a double take, wouldn't it? :-)
