Birthday Forum

Crossville, TN

Dave....would it be possible to have one forum dedicated to Birthday and Anniversary wishes?...it's hard to keep up with them when they get started in so many forums...Jo

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

That might be kind of nice...The birthday person could get a link to the forum in the standard birthday e-mail that goes out. Maybe a link could be placed above the birthday list, directing folks to the forum. It's nice getting those surprise threads, though.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Great idea. I always feel bad when I don't look at the side bar until afternoon and find a birthday that hasn't been acknowledged. (I generally stay at the brug forum for birthdays) Gosh, how about developing something that could automatically put each paid members thread up for birthdays and we could just reply on it. No one would ever get missed that way. I know, makes me sound lazy, doesn't it? LOL!

Crossville, TN

I really meant that we would have ONE form to post our Birthday and Anniversary greetings to, instead of have some of us post in General and some in Parkfing lot...and, yes, some in Brugs...LOL That way the Birthday Person doesn't have to look all over the forums to see who all to reply to for their Happy's. Jo

I think it is a great idea.

....and some in Canadian Trading....and some in Daylilies....and some in Pets..... yeah, I think a Birthday forum is a great idea too! :-)

This idea has my vote too.

Hey Dave♫....that makes 6 for a Birthday Forum....how about it?

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

great idea!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Should this forum be created, it'd be kind of neat if a new thread could automatically be generated in that forum for each birthday person, something along the line of

Subject: Happy birthday, Gardenwife! July 25

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

My thoughts exactly, gw. Some birthday peeps aren't regular posters and I often wonder if they feel slighted when they don't get a birthday thread.

Crossville, TN

What about those that don't get posted too...as we might not know them as they never post...? It might make them feel bad. JMHO Jo

If Dave just gives us a special place to wish people Happy Birthday I think that would be sufficient. We could take it from there much like we do now anyhow. It would be kind of like the welcome forum where you can stop in, see what's new and post if you wish. Lots of new folks never go there, some hop right in and say hello and introduce themselves. Lots of us oldies never go there and welcome new folks, but I haven't heard that anybody's feelings were hurt. I do go welcome people but not on a regular basis, and probably would do the same at a birthday forum.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

GW, if YOU send me a 'Happy Birthday' it means a lot; if a machine were to do it for you automatically it would be totally meaningless to the recipient. See?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I definitely understand, yep. I just hate seeing anyone left out when it comes to birthday greetings. Holdover from valentine's days in gradeschool, I reckon. ;)

TUCSON, AZ(Zone 9a)

I don't post that often. But I sure think it would be nice to have just one forum for birthdays and anniversary. there are so maney of us now to remember all. :))))))

Crossville, TN

I still think it is a good idea...LOL Jo

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

I would like to see a Birthday Fourm also.

TUCSON, AZ(Zone 9a)

ME THREE !! LOL :)))))))

With all of the new forums, I think it might be time to revisit this request.

Sometimes I recognize a subscriber's name on the birthday list and I want to make sure that I send them a greeting in the forum that they post in most often, so I click on the threads they have started and I don't find many or sometimes lots of different forums. Other subscribers post in threads already created, but rarely start their own threads, and that way you can't tell which forums they are most active in. I end up Dmailing them a birthday wish instead. I would *really* rather have one forum to go to and either start a birthday thread for that person or add to one already created. Plus, if I miss the actual day, I can add a belated greeting.

If I had a magic wand, I'd wish that a thread would automatically be started when the day arrives, and a Dmail sent to the birthday person with a link to the forum.

And as to the possibility of hurt feelings, that's a toughy. But I will do my best to post in a Birthday Forum regularly.

Edited to add: I also think that if this is done automatically, it should be a subscriber benefit only, otherwise the forum would be overwhelming.

I think it's a good idea, and I'll create it.

Dear Dave,

Thank you so very much...now we have ONE place that we can post greetings to!! Jo

Have any of you looked at the Birthday Forum lately?

Do you think it has worked the way it was intended to?

Look thru a years worth of pages. How many times have you posted?

frostweed, rose318 and Sheila_FW are the ones keeping that forum going.

I thought the forum would be a fun way to wish our friends a happy day, but it seems to have become a obligation for 3 generous members instead. And that is shameful.

Maybe going back to the old way and eliminating the Birthday Forum should be considered.

My cent and a half.

I agree, it shouldn't be the same couple people having to do it all the time, doesn't seem fair to them although kudos to them for the effort they put in so far! I think a lot of the time the person whose b-day it is may not even know the forum exists and know to look there for the thread about their birthday. I know I don't check there regularly to add my b-day wishes for my DG friends, I instead post on threads that get started on the forums that they visit frequently because I know they'll see it there.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

mg and ecrane3 - you are absolutely right, and I must hang my head in shame that I never thought to check the birthday thread on my birthday, so I never thanked the wonderful people who did wish me a happy birthday there :-(

Like many people, I tend to "hang out" only in a few forums. The rest on my watch list I keep track of, but only jump in when I have something that I hope is useful to say or need to ask a question about something going on there that I find interesting.

i've always just used the homepage birthday list at the bottom right of the page. i think the people who keep the birthday forum going for all of us are doing it because they like to do it. i do visit there occasionally too. if you have a special friend on a particular forum, you will usually find a birthday thread there for them too and i think that's also great. birthdays are special times and any way the word gets out is fine with me!

I am guilty as well, I didn't even know there was a Birthday Forum....When my B'day came around I was wished a happy one in the forums I frequent.
Now I feel bad, if someone wished me a happy birthday and I missed saying thank you, I do apologize...

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

I have to admit that when I see someone's birthday on the homepage, I dmail them. I used to visit the BD forum but stopped. To be honest, I was afraid to step on anyones toes by posting greetings. I guess I assumed the folks who were doing it were kind of "official", that it was their baby and I didnt want hard feelings.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, it looks like I should say something at this point.

Before the birthday forum was started, i was already posting birthday greetings on various forums for people who didn't get a greeting from the people posting in the forum that they frequented the most.

This is how I did it. I went to the members birthday list on my home page, clicked on the names listed there and went to their home page, checked to see which forums they posted in the most by checking the threads they started, went to that forum and posted their greeting if none was posted.
All this took some time, but I was glad to do it, because it makes me happy to think that I might have brightened someone's day.

Then the Birthday forum was started, and I thought, great idea! now we can have it all in one place. It was started on February 13th 2006, and people were doing their thing, posting whatever they wanted for whomever they knew, or wanted to post for. Of course, I joined in gladly, since now I didn't have to go searching the forums any more.
Then on February 20th one of the members who requested the forum, contacted me and asked if I thought we should
post all the names under one header or separately, and how we were going to handle it.
I told her that since the forum had been her idea, she should be the one to decide, and I would do whatever she thought was fair. I suggested that maybe be we should take turns posting, maybe by the week or by the month so it would be a joint effort.

However I never heard from her, and because I didn't want to drop the ball, I continued posting, which I didn't mind at all.
Sheila-FW and Rose318 have been my supporters, with Sheila taking the responsibility for periods of time when she could, she goes to work early and doesn't have time in the mornings.
I go to work at 10.00 or 1.00 so I have more time in the mornings. I usually post around 7.00.
Of course our posting the group, shouldn't have prevented anyone from posting individually for their friends, as has been done quite a few times. The heart of the matter is, that anyone can post whatever they want, no problem here.

I would like to propose a compromise, starting tomorrow morning I will not post the group and let whoever wants to do it go ahead with it, then if it is not posted by12.00, I will post it.
In other words I will be the back up person, and that way if nobody thinks to do it, I will still be there.
Do you guys think this is a workable plan?
Please let me know.
Sincerely;
Josephine.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I think one of our new features which has the latest posts on DG on the homepage makes it hard to miss that there is a birthday forum doesn't it? I mean, eventually people will see it enough times to remember it is there. I was surprised to come across this thread though...I didn't know there was a birthday forum!

Those who post birthday wishes you are just wonderful. Thanks for all you do!
