Hey guys, my almost 87 year old Mom wants to know how this computer stuff works. I took her photo so you can see her too!
Original Crazy Lady my Mom!
She's cute!
Of course, you probably MADE her crazy......
I think raising EIGHT kids like me made her crazy....
She loves to take photos & write letters, so this "instant" thing really has her fascinated.
Bet she will learn too. DD brought me a old computer last march in a mo . I was calling and asking how to scan pic and photos ,she told me if the old one did that they would have kept it ,so I went in April and bought this one she is amazed.
I can do things she cant and I never even had typing in school . Get mom PC and watch out she will show you up .
What a cutie , wish I could hug her.
Thank you. Mom is cool and very active. We moved her out of the family home/acreage out on the edge of town into an apartment by her church & the Lutheran school we kids all attended. Just 150 feet away, she's lightened her purse so she can run to events every day.
We all watch over her since most of us are in town. One brother & wife take her list & get her groceries. I pay all the bills & take care of little things. One Sis takes her to Bible class & meetings at another church. My brothers fix things for her. We all take her to family events, dinner at various houses, school events & such. The grandchildren visit her too plus she even attends programs & recitals for the Great Grandchildren.
The apartment I found for her is not only centrally located, but quiet with only 12 apartments & lots of trees. She has 2 bedrooms with extra space if she wants a viaitor (like my sis who doesn't work but comes to get $$ from Mom.)
Anyway, she's happy & warm & watched over. She IS curious , but mostly about email & taking pictures digitally. LOTS of pictures over the years!
she's beautiful! you are so blessed, wanda. please tell your mom, warm greetings came from the san francisco bay area.
=)
Your mom is so precious Wanda, thank you for sharing her with us.
Is your Mom a big gardener? Is that where you get your green thumb from?
wow your really lucky wanda! cheerish her
Hi mom ~~~waving~~~ you look marvelous simply mavelous!
Mamma is appreciating all your well wishes. She says "Hi" to you all.
Mom has only one "vice" these days--taking roll after roll of pictures---of anything! Many are blurry or dark, so she takes LOTS hoping to get good ones. I explained how with digital, we could just keep & develop the good ones. How we could edit them to make them better. I think I'll let her use one of my daughter's digital for a while & see if she likes it.
Mama loves cats but can't have one in her apartment. Too bad.
Wanda, did you see my questions?
Sorry, woodspirit. I was just scanning this fast early so I could get back to my co-op work.
Mom has a green thumb for vegetables--she had to to feed a family of 10! I remember her getting these little " sticks" several years ago in the mail. She planted them & my brothers mowed them off. She put cement blocks around them for protection & all we could see were weeds for 2 years. Several years later, she had HUGE Concord grape vines carefully tended & bearing grapes for wine. One glass & she was tipsy--so the wine went a long way. LOL
My love of flowers was fostered by 3 neighbors as I grew up. From 3-7 years old, the next door lady let me dip a little watering can into a rain barrel to water her flowers. (My brothers & the dogs tromped all of ours.)
We moved when I was 7years old next door to a man who spent 40 years tending the flowers in the city parks. He patiently taught me alot & shared peonies, iris, daylilies & other flowers. My poor Daddy had to help me dig most of the holes.
My Grandma moved in when I was 16 years old and brought with her plants plus 75 years of knowledge. We worked side by side for a decade on my parents land. Each home I've had has some of the flowers from all those planted at Mom & Dad's house. When we built this house, I made sure that I got a yard big enough to grow a decent garden. Many of My lilacs, peonies, daylilies & irises and other perennials come from thoise I planted at the family home so many years ago.
What a lovely story! I had 2 aunts that inspired me and eventually I had a place to grow things of my own. I have hyacinths in honor of one aunt and roses in honor of the other.
Wanda you have turly touched my heart with your gardening history. And....your mother must be a treasure.
Deb
Mama is. I held Daddy's hand on his deathbed & promised him to watch over her. Five of us kids were there with Mama & Daddy for the last couple of hours. Mom took care of us & now it's time for us to watch over her.
Had to buy her a little bird house yesterday for her finches. They keep laying eggs all over the cage & breaking them. She tried to give them nesting materials, but nothing worked. i bought a tiny wood bird house to hang in the cage. I'll take over dried grass & stuff & hope they make a nest. mom would get a kick out of baby birdies in her apartment.
Oh baby birds would be wonderful. That's nice, the way you told your and Mom's story. Good memories are the best. And having her with/near for this time will always be a good memory.
I had my Dad with me and cantankerous as he was they were a pretty good ten years. He gardened the veggies and I did the flowers. ~Blooms
Wanda -- if they're Zebra finches, they'll keep trying to make babies to no end.... The female may need a break!
Mary, they keep laying eggs and dropping them on the cage floor to break.
Mom enjoys them any way with all the chirping and hopping around. Keeps her busy re-flling water & food dishes. And she loves to watch them bathe in their teacup....
What a wonderful story of gardening through the generations. It is great that you were able to move plants with family history to your garden. I took cuttings of a wild rose that grew up in the tree at my mother's home and planted some "ditch lilies" from my husband's parents home so know it means a lot.
Your mother is a cutie pie and I think if she does get that digital camera experience, she would probably like to start in your garden. Nope, probably would want to snap a pic or 2 of the birds first. You and your siblings are fortunate to have such an inquisitive mom who is not willing to stop learning no matter her age. Hooray for her! She will probably love email.
Hope the birds find a way to keep the eggs in the cage. Too bad your mom can't have a cat but sounds like the birds are keeping her busy. Best of luck in figuring out the proper bird nest material for the eggs. Yarn?

Waving hello to Wanda's Mom.... She is a sweetie! What great stories and memories. Thanks fo sharing...
I took down mom's Chritmas decorations & packed them away. I'm trying to get her into the idea of "seasonal" decorations you put away & take out again next year so her apartment won't be so crowded. She gets stacks going & there's no where for her guests to sit.
I put Valentines all over the windows & moved all the heart stuff to her living room. I'm picking up some Easter window clings & ribbons to freshen up her Easter baskets for the next round. Maybe a bunny sign for the flowerbed in front of her window. The bulbs I planted last fall will come up soon by her windows.
Hi Wanda's Mom! Welcome to Dave's Garden!
I'll tell Mom you said "Hi". I found some great Easter decorations to add to mom's crosses--plus a basket of candy for her sweet tooth & company.
Momma always likes people stopping in...
I was walking into the local grocery store today when I saw two, lovely, older ladies getting out of a car. It seemed to be a mother and daughter both beyond retirement age. It touched my heart to see how gently the daughter helped her mother to her feet, held her arm, and guided her steps as they both walked to the store’s entrance. I felt my soul grow brighter as I watched this scene of tenderness, caring, and love. It made me smile to think that this loving bond had lasted well over seventy years and was still going strong. I waited until both of these beautiful souls got to the door and then held it open for them to go through. It delighted me when the mother turned her tiny, smiling face to me and said, "Why thank you young man." I could see from the surprised sparkle in her eyes that she hadn’t expected this tiny act of kindness and help. As I smiled back at her, though, I could see that she and her daughter had done a far kinder and more helpful act for me. They had shown me again what life is truly all about. It is about loving each other, caring for each other, sharing joy with each other, and helping each other from the second of our first breath until the moment of our last sigh. God put us on this world to love each other just as He loves us. To do anything else is to stray from our purpose and invite misery and unhappiness into our lives. We are here to love everyone be they family, friends, strangers, or even enemies. We are here to show and share that love with every smile we give, encouraging word we say, or kind act we do. Sometimes it is the easiest thing in the world to do and at other times it is the most difficult. Still, it is what we are here for and what we are made for. May we all follow those wonderful, old ladies’ example then and joyously live our love for each other.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~i thought of wanda and her mom when i read this.

Beautiful . ((( Tazzy)))
Wanda , I enjoy every time I visit this thread.
I always open your Mom's picture , I just love looking at her ,
I can feel warmth coming from her and brings me a smile.
Such a beautiful picture IMO
Now this is a cool thread and very real!
My Mom just turned 73 on the 20th.
In 2003 I visited and went over an old computer that had belonged to a sister that had passed. I did some maintenance, explained email and installed a modem and found an ISP and set that account up to just debit my bank. Ok... she thought it might be alright.
Then 5/04 her and her DS/DBL drove down and visited me and did a little surfing on my system. It wasn't too long after she got back home that she told me she had ordered a new PC and had a techie from city hall coming by to set it up for her. She's also been riding her own sister now telling her she should upgrade because her system is too old and slow!! What a hoot! We exchange email almost daily and she makes the 2hr drive to Denver to visit her sister several times a month so she keeps me posted when she's hitting the road either way. It's really been fun to watch her latch on to this new technology but she's always been so sharp!
Thanks for starting this thread

Blaine,
What a great story about your mom! Nothing will stop her now! LOL!
That is a fun story. I don't suppose you want to post that wonderful pic again, would you? :)
Yep, that's the one. Wonderful pic and it always make me smile. (But the bocce balls really add to the intrigue) :)
Wonderful shots! Just shows that we don't get older, just better over the years!
Blaine, I absolutely love that bottom pic! (I think I remember the bocce ball story.....too funny!) I hope your mom has gotten a better chair to sit in while she cruises the net! LOL! =)
Ditto On the chair.
Ouchie !
Yes, she's got her mini-office all set up and cozy. The pice was just the quick setup after I overhauled that old computer and made it internet capable. Like everyone else, it didn't take long before she 'needed' bigger and better. :) Kind of like your first water garden, minigreenhouse or one rack with shoplights is never big enough.
