Gardening on the beach?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Another question I'm not quite sure where to post:

I'm going to be doing some landscaping for family on the beach in North Carolina. I'm comfortable gardening in NC, in general, but I don't know anything about gardening ocean front. I'm not even sure what questions to ask.

Anyone have any suggestions about what I might need to know and where to go for that information? Even better, is anyone familiar with beach gardens?

Please tell me if there is another forum in which this might be better posted.

Thank you for any help!

I live near the bay but many of my friends live across the bridge on the gulf. The important thing to remember is the plants must be salt tolerant. Since much of the soil is sand, beds must be created with a richer soil if you are going to plant regular plants.

Thanks Rylaff,

How do you know if a plant is salt tolerant? Occasionally I've seen it mentioned in a description, but not often.

They have had some topsoil shipped in, but I'm not sure of it's depth.

The only plant I know that does well is one that I've seen growing around that area, Pittisporum. I'm sure that I will use it, but I would love an ornamental tree or two, plus some under plantings. Just enough to landscape the front area of the house.

AWESOME!!! Thank you Lisa! You would have thought I would have looked here, myself - I went to NC State! :)
