greenhouse day

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

what a great day, to spend working in a greenhouse. Beautiful photos.

Precipice Valley, BC(Zone 2a)

thanks for sharing those with us--lovely. Do you know the name of that orchid? I got my first orchid last fall (a moth orchid) and it's very pretty, but this one is spectacular!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Ooooooooooh Lynn....your job this week I would kill for (esp. the first dibs on any of todays pics)! Ü Out of curiousity what are they charging for some of the plants (ie Hibiscus and orchids)? Did they get any named Hibiscus in?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

Beautiful!

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Pam most of the tropicals were $40 and the orchids ranged from 12 to 65 (for the 6 inch like the yellow spotted)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Lynn what is

Quoting:

About the same price as tropicals here then but the bromeliad is very unique! It sorta reminds me of the Mexican Flame vine that you grew two summers ago.

Nice pictures Lynn...I just love tropical plants. I'd be hard pressed not to want to take a bunch home too. Lovely orchids. The last one is a slipper orchid - a paphiopedilum. It's really nice. We have a bunch but haven't had any bloom this year for some reason, although I just noticed today that one is actually going to bloom. Definitely need to do something different with them this year though. I've been so discouraged since we got those *%#@$^*(% mealybugs into all the orchids. It just drives me crazy and makes me want to have nothing to do with them. Bad attitude I know. Anybody want to trade for some orchids?

Sorry...I digressed. Thanks for sharing the pictures Lynn.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Oh Lynn, I don't know how you do it. If it were me, I'd have them all in my back seat. I have no will power whatsoever. Makes me want to jump in my car and drive the 12 hours east to visit my DM, DS, DIL and DGS...and then perhaps sneak out to Salisbury and check out the Orchid and Tropicals display!!! :Donna

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

pam, i have no idea of the botanical name or the price on that baby. it was the only one and i think maybe it is a keeper for the owner. will ask about it though

Sandy--I'm in love! What is the name of that yellow orchid????

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

I don't blame you Rosemary, it's very nice isn't it? It looks like an Odontoglossum type.

To explain why I say Odontoglossum type here's a bit of information about them taken from the book, The Step by Step Guide to Growing & Displaying Orchids by Wilma Rittershausen and Gill & David Oakley.

Odontoglossum blooms are uniquely patterned, with individual designs to a degree that no other orchid has achieved. Their pseudobulbs are oval, from light to dark green, with four narrowly oval leaves, the center pair being 6-9in(15-23cm) long. Only a few of the species within this group are available to growers due to their scarcity. The hybrids offer a far wider range of colours, as well as being more robust and therefore easier to grow. Much interbreeding with additional. closely allied genera within this group, including Cochlioda, Oncidium and Brassia, has produced the intergeneric hybrids that have given rise to the fantastic variety now available. The most popular genera are Odontioda (Odontoglossum x Cochlioda), Odontonia (Odontoglossum x Miltoniopsis), Odontocidium (Odontoglossum x Oncidium), Vuylstekeara (Miltoniopsis x Odontioda) and Wilsonara (Odontioda x Oncidium). Further man-made genera within this group become considerably complex and all are loosely referred to as odontoglossum types. These hybrids can be traced back to the original South American species, most of which come from high elevations in the Andes. Their range extends from Mexico, through Columbia, crossing the equator to Peru.

Speaking of Orchids have you all seen Todd's collection? He just posted them here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1274374

I love em but have discovered the only ones that I can keep alive and blooming year after year are the Phals. If you happen to see one that looks like this one please let me know Lynn! http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1248829

Thank you for asking about the bromeliad as well. :)

I sure enjoy "Greenhouse Day", Lynn. You have photographed some very cool stuff. That "striped thingy" you showed are on display in my Safeway here. No name though. The stickers just say "Tropicals". I hate that. Pretty though. Your Brugs look great.

Winnipeg,, MB(Zone 3a)

Now where in Edmonton is this Greenhouse?

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Salisbury Greenhouse (where Lynn volunteers her time) is just east of Edmonton a few minutes, in the Hamlet of Sherwood Park. I lived there for many years.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I used to play in an RCMP pipe band in Sherwood Park! It seemed like a nice community.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Donna, I'm like you, I really enjoy these days that Lynn has and posts. makes me want to work in a GH, but I've always wanted to do that kind of work.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I'm really getting the itch to do some serious Greenhouse stalking!!

Thanks for the pictures Lynn and making it feel like spring is *just* around the corner.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Lynn. All those beautiful, lush little plants. What a dream it would be to work in that kind of environment every day.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

I look forward to the GH day posts too! Thanks for the fix! Joelle

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

I worked in a perennial GH weekends. Found the Manitoba heat in there was just too much - even with back and front open. Still, stocked up my garden so wasn't all bad. They still phone me with questions. I drop in every now and then. Last time I found some great U shaped bamboo canes, just right for climbing spinach.

Prefer to work outside, but has made a note of Salisbury Greenhouse. Sometimes think I spend more $$ in Edmonton shopping than in Winnipeg. Does anyone in Edmonton go to the ARLS Martagon Lily Show?
Ginny

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

My father would kill to go to that.....I'm not sure what varieties of martagons he has or if they are survived (with all the big machinery that's been in his yard this winter). If they do I'll have to make a point of taking pictures of them this summer.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

did not know there was such a show - is it run by the hort society or a lily society and do you know when it occurs?

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Linda, thanks for all the pictures you have taken. Lucky you to be able to work there. I was thinking maybeyou were doing this at Holes Nursery. I got hubby to take me there when we went to Edmonton. This was during the May long weekend. I was expecting more but they were just starting to get all the perennials out.
:) Donna

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL, well thank you Donna, but these photos on this thread of the wonderful days spent in the GH, are from Lynn.

I'm so glad I"m not the only one who screws up getting the names right.

Linda
