First off, I'm not sure if this is "Hot Linking" but if it is, ignore this and reply to MSJen's post.
I wanted to propose the idea of being able to insert pictures (copy and pasting them in threads, example:< img src= "http://img. photobucket. com/albums/v165/captmicha/New/froggy3edit. jpg" > ) instead of just being able to upload one picture per thread.
It seems like it would be useful, like if you have multiple plants you need IDed, or so on.

Multiple Picture Posting?
I think the potential problem with that is the potential of bandwidth theft, inadvertant as it would be. If the image is not hosted by the individual linking to it in that manner, the image host's bandwidth is being stolen. Most providers of photos and clip art request that images be downloaded to the user's computer and uploaded elsewhere for use. Linking to a page containing a photo is one thing, but using an image via a direct image tag link is another.
Maybe this is a matter of semantics, but you *can* post multiple pictures to a thread - it's just a one-image-per-post limit.
There is the issue for potential bandwidth theft that GW mentioned and - purely pragmatically - most users find an upload "wizard" to be much faster and easier than typing and troubleshooting html tags to imbed images....
Oh, alright then! I think I've figured out how to link pics anyways so it's all good.
How do you link pics?

I am also very limited by the way we're limited here;
I just went away and did some work while I uploaded a photo of pics to my own webspace . . . but it would take an eternity and put me to sleep to upload them one by one to Dave's (dialup connection here).
I'm afraid you'll just have to upload them onto Dave's. He does not allow direct linking for security purposes, plus he doesn't encourage bandwidth theft. Linking to your own webspace wouldn't be theft, but if people linked to others' sites without permission, it would be.
OK, I'm slow. How is uploading 55 pictures of butterflies hatching bandwidth theft? And what exactly is that anyway,
Thanks in advance from the slow;-),
Maggie
What I'm talking about as linking directly to someone else's pictures using an image tag in HTML, making the photo appear within a post.
Every time a page is viewed and that photo is "pulled" from the website for view in the post, that's a hit on the remote website. People have limits to the bandwitdth allowed every month on their account, and each hit counts against it. So, you can see where posting a direct link to a photo would be a drain on someone's account.
Again, if it's your account, that's one thing. But many would direct-link to photos on any number of websites, most not realizing what they were doing. If the pictures belong to you and are at your own website, it's not bandwidth theft. If, however, the pictures are at someone else's website and no permission is granted, it is.
That's why some websites say something to the effect of "you're welcome to use these graphics, but you must download them from here and upload them to your own site. Do not link directly to them here."
Thanks GW for the explanation, I got it!
Maggie
I dont like the linking of pics using a img tag or url tag to a off
site, a few months / years later and the place where the pic was
is gone and now you have a forum with broken pics.
just my H.O.
If, instead of linking to a picture which is on some other website, I right-click and 'Save Picture As' on my hard-disk and then include that in a post, is that plagiarizing?

I think at least a link to the original site should be given. Technically, though, pictures should be posted elsewhere without first asking the site owner's permission.
But VbSparky has a good point there.
I was just responding to your specific question, Max. Yes, links are outdated over time, but we should ask site owners' permission to post their photos or other graphics on other websites. I know I wouldn't want my works posted without my consent; 98% of the time I would have no problem with letting people post my photos, but to me it's courtesy to ask and I would expect credit be given.
GW, I edited my initial question to add "which is". That may put a different slant on the issue.
Semantics, semantics.
