Jackie, I'm in south central Iowa. Two counties north of the Iowa, Missouri line. We don't cancel school for two inches, but we will cancel for a quarter inch of ice, real quick. I'm sure if we get six or eight inches of snow, it might shut things down for a day while the country roads get plowed out, but that would be about it.
Can Brugs be "forced"?
Hi Shirley,
My mom says that the ice and cold are brutal... God Bless You guys!
Can I ask your expert advice about my suav pink? Did you say that I should move her to the cooler stairway? Will the mites transmit to the others living peacefully there if I haven't murdered everybody or their little eggs? Any info is helpful, thanks!
Jackie
It's possible, but they would probably become inactive because of the cool temps. They can transfer to your hands and right to the next brug too.
Thanks Shirley! Jackie
Hi again, Jackie! I certainly don't envy your current weather...you poor thing :(
I live in south central Texas, otherwise known as the Texas Hill Country. Today it was 78 and sunny. Will probably get into the high 40's tonight. Our winter weather is very unpredictable and is regularly all over the temperature board.
Hi again Kaufmann, I guess one advantage of Buffalo weather is that the snow and cold kills off any really threatening bugs (except mites, if you know what I mean.) I have to tell myself that you can't shovel your way out of an earthquake, mudslide, hurricane, tornado or flood so that I feel better! :) By the way, I checked out your photos, and they are just gorgeous... I especially love the Crown of Thorns, and the Lantana. For me, that is paradise on Earth! Jackie
My experience is accordance with Monika's regarding it is important to let a lot of fresh air in the GH or growing facility. If the air humidity become too high the plants can not get rid of superflous water. This cause them to cast off leaves, flowerbuds, fruits and sometimes even smaller branches. There is often found a line of bursted plant cells along the abscission place. Here is an example. B. aurea was loaded with buds, when I moved it inside. I closed the door during the night and it dropped a lot of buds. However, when the door was left open during the nights to let fresh and dry air in, the B. aurea kept the rest of the buds to flowers.
Tonny that is so heart breaking to see all those flower buds laying at the base of your brug. I'm glad you discovered what the problem was and was able to have some blooms. I know I would be really sick to see my brugs grow and grow and then finally start getting some flower buds and wake up the next morning and find them laying on the ground. I would just sit down and have a good cry, and a fit right with it.
Jackie -- thank you, that's very sweet! And, we definitely have plenty of yucky bugs...
Gretchen , I'm getting zone envy now. Do you get snow ?
Well, I sure appreciate all the help. I guess by not letting these go dormant, I have done more harm than good. I sure don't want weak plants this spring.
I won't make the same mistake next fall.
Thankyou all. Bj
OMG , you are so lucky.
I can handle cold temps if I must but I really hate fighting snow.
Had enough of that stuff in the last 2 weeks to last a loooong time.
Funny , but I always thought Texas was flat land .
I take it from one of your posts about hill country , that I getter go look up a good map, eh ?
S.
You know Scoot ... I was so disappointed the first time I went to Texas. Didn't see no desert, no tumbleweed, no longhorns, no mountains and no roadrunners. It actually reminded me of northern Michigan.
lol. Sorry you were disappointed. If ya ever get out this way LMK.
While cruising the back roads last year I can across a farm that was raising long horns. Surprised ? You betcha !
Scooterbug - I am the opposite, I would rather deal with the snow than the cold. Maybe 'cause we get a lot of practice (teehee.) I do not like when it drops to single digits or below (when it is actually too cold to snow.... can't go outside without pain ...it is good for staring at garden catalogues!)
Jackie
I hate snow ! We run a small farm and DH also drives semi trucks for a living.
Snow makes things extremly difficult getting chores done and it makes extra work in the barns too.
When you need to dig your way to each barn out back & the feed building twice a day , it really bites .
Then I sit here and worry about DH getting home safely.
Some of my friends with 9 to 5 jobs and can call in , stay home and just hunker down in the house and wait it out , they're lucky IMO.
But on the other hand we would both go nutz doing the 9 to 5 job thing. Too old to change anyway .. lol
I can see why you hate snow! I would too with the farm... I'll pray for snow for me and cold for you!!
Jackie (Or better yet, I'll just pray for an early Spring for everbody!)
You better pray for the latter lol
Hey don't get me wrong I hate cold too but it's the lesser of the two evils.
My happiness environment is Key West, FL in August. I love heat & humidity.
Mexico, in Dec! My dream wintering area!

Goodness, what part of Texas did you visit? There is plenty of desert in West Texas, along with mountains and tumbleweed. There are Roadrunners living on my property, and Longhorns at my neighbor directly across the road from me.
And, its quite rugged her -- very hilly and rocky, with no real tall trees.
