Automatic Picture Re-sizing?

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Just curious... would it be hard or a bad idea to have an automatic picture re-sizing feature?
Like when you go to upload a photo the system automatically resizes it for you to make it 500 or 400 pixels? Unless it's just me- every picture I take/scan is more than 1000 pixels and takes forever to upload. Or should we just resize our own pictures? It would save space wouldnt it?

Resize your own, to make it faster to upload and easier for us. :)

Well I try to go ahead and resize my photos- but sometimes I forget, LOL!

At DG large pictures are automatically resized once they are uploaded (max. 800 pix wide I believe) but you have to resize on your own before uploading if you want to save upload time.
There is a picture resize tool for Windows XP called Image Resizer which you can get here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
When installed you only have to right click on your picture and choose resize to get a choice of sizes to copy or convert to.

Thank you! :-D I spent hours last night trying to resize all of my pictures, LOL!

I use a little freebee called Easy Thumbnails. I can resize one picture or a folder full all at once. It will make them the size you choose. Very easy and fast. Not a big download either. You can find it here: http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/index.php

crims .. Jes don't allow yourself to resize your pics .. too small beforehand ..

Sometimes, it does some most fantastic shots .. an utter injustice - making 'em too small !

Depending on the quality of the images, it usually saves some download time to save them as jpeg's rather than gifs (you lose some image quality, but it *is* usually faster to download them.)

Irfanview has a batch resize/rename ability that will do whole folders, too. You can also apply sharpening, contrast, etc. to the images as they're processed. However you do it, when you resize an image down, it's good to do a little sharpening before you save it, for they can lose their clarity a little in the resizing process. The XP Image Resizer works great, doing all of that. You can highlight multiple images and resize them all in one batch, too.

Thank you GW! I think I got most of my DG piccies resized the other day. Now if I can just get my fingers to post them, hehe.

"Irfanview has a batch resize/rename ability"

It does? Dang! Wish I'd a'known that. Do I need to DL a special thing for that? Or is that a technique hidden (to me) somewhere?) I've been downsizing them one at a time (boring!).

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Nope, it's in there. Just go to FILE > BATCH CONVERSION/RENAME. Be sure to tell it to put your modified photos in their own directory so you don't overwrite the originals. You can either click "batch conversion", "batch rename or batch conversion - rename result files". Check out the advanced button and see what all's in each. Have fun!

I don't know, but I think I'm too dumb for Ifanview, still can't figure out how to do anything but fix a pic :( Sure would like to stitch 2 photos together. GW, do you have this infor in a blog somewhere?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Vi, no you're not too dumb! It is just not a very user-friendly program. If you don't need the pictures lined up perfectly, Irfanview can do that. Look at IMAGE > CREATE PANORAMIC IMAGE. There, you can tell it the pictures you want to include in the panorama, and whether you want the resulting image horizontal (side-by-side) or vertical (one atop another). I've found it works best to choose large images, make the panoramic image, then resize the whole resulting panorama to whatever final size you want, then save/name it..

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Vi...if I can do it, you can do it!

Thanks, GW. I'll give that a try . Mucho obliged.
