Grow light stand project

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Look what I found
Just bought this roll around shelf stand from Sams for 79.95.
It is four foot wide, No screws or bolts and everthing just clips togather.
Will now install lights on it. 10.00 each at Lowes.
Every shelf is adjustable by one inch incruments.
You can see I placed four trays on one shelf. They hang off about 1/2 inch front and back.

that's great, now if you want the greenhouse effect just buy some clear plastic and make a cover for it, keeps the heat in.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Thats an Idea. That way I wont have to use heat in the room. Na, mybe not as I have to turn off the lights at night. Explain the theory you have. Ted

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You are going to have a nice seedling stand there, Ted.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Looks great, Ted. I have six of these shelves but mine doesn't have rollers on them. Rollers would be a big help. I bought mine at Lowe's for $69. Then I found them at Tractor Supply for $49.00 but I haven't seen any there lately.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I want one Ted. Ya think they have them at all Sam's?? I'm sure they do...

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

Thats a great stand Tar:
it should work wonderfully .

barrington, IL(Zone 5a)

they used to carry the same ones at costco. it's worth looking.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

I bought one for my g'house too. I have a client that has a gazillion small pots and I wanted to get them up off the floor.....this is just perfect for that. Have all of them in one small area.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Good Morning,
Both Costso and Sam's have website. Search them and they will tell you the nearest store or ship them from their stock.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

TA. I have mine in my computer room, I have the lights on a timer, but with the plastic over the stand it is like a mini greenhouse, the plants stay warmer due to the lights, my lights go off at 11pm, and back on at 6am.

This one at Sams comes with extra parts to convert it to a three foot roll around cart and a fixed three foot stand with floor pads. Really heavy duty and weighs a ton. Had to have help loading it up. I stood on one of the shelves when putting it togather. No Jumping please! LOL

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I've seen something very similar at Lowes. Have any of you seen one there and happen to know how much it costs?? I don't have a Sam's or the other store mentioned nearby. Also, do you have to put it together and, if so, how difficult was it??? TIA!!!

Edited to ask one more question: Have you used it long enough to see if it rusts???

I have 2 of these stands in my little GH...They are very easy to assemble...and have the wheels. I got the shorter ones and the one with the butcher block top...I have not had them long enough to see if they rust...I got mine at Home Depot...actually I had to remove alot of the shelves for my plants as they were too tall....What a good idea though to use them for seedlings!! Thanks for the idea !!

Your brugs look like they are doing great. Waiting for payday to add lights to mine. I also want to put a timer on mine. Have to try the clear plastic on the seed starting and seedlings.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Ophs...I just noticed only the low table has the wheels...not the taller ones! sorry...so many times it takes me looking at a photo to see what I missed in real life!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Doris, last year they were $69.00 at Lowe's.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

My plant stand looks just like this with three shelves, and is at least 20 years old. We bought it used at a restaurant auction more than 15 years ago. It came out of a walk in cooler. The uprights are stainless and haven't rusted at all. The shelves are galvanized and have a little bit of rust, but not enough to worry about. I think the ones at Sam's are all stainless. You will love it, Ted!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Too cool! That has my name on it!!! I'm going to have to go see if they have them here... Thanks for the info, Ted!

These are the same racks we used when I worked at Boeing. We used them to store parts and different job on. They are very sturdy, and they handle real easy. Not sure how they would move around with carpet, but on cement or wood floors they would work great. I never thought to get them for my flower racks they are a little pricey. But I do think the next time I go to Sam's I am going to pick me one up. The shelf rack I am using now is narrow for my lights and they extend out on the sides. Just like TARogers5 said they are easy to assemble. I don't remember how many of those I put together or helped put together. No I am not making any commission on these racks, just wanted to put my 2 cents worth in to let everyone know that these are GREAT racks.

WantabeGardener: the way I see it you better be going to Sam's and picking up another rack. Getting into Brugs you are going to need it. LOL

Linda

Isn't this fun?

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Diana, that is so pretty and neat, I love it! You are talented!

Ronna, for years I've eyeing one at a restaurant, Starika, we visit once a week or so, that has the world's best sweet tea, and it's been there for 40 years, even when the place used to be Fava's. Brother, the owner, laughs at me when I tell him I want to buy it, but I really do, I wanted it for dog grooming before brugs, it is much heavier than the one at Lowe's, but otherwise, identical. If I ever name a brug or two, Starika and Fava will be their names, if the 'name police', my grand girls, approve...if we don't use the the names for puppies first...

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Just got back from HomeDepot and the ones they have are only 3 ft wide for 69.95. For grow lights they have to be 4 ft.
The one at Sams is 4 foot x 6 foot.

Diana that is one nice looking rack you made. Now I know what mine is supposed to look like. Now is I can talk DW into letting me move it into the living room.

Hehe...thanks you guys..Remember I said before brugs...been into them about three years..I think...but mine are always big...lol..even from seed..they grow fast...right now I have 9 cuttings..was going to get out of them...but...I changed my mind..hahaha...I try and keep them back...all winter..I hate the bugs..so much...so..I have been spraying the leaves..with homemade..bug..stuff...hahahaha...well, I do not know..I guess I made it to strong..the leaves have fallen off....Now I am worried...I was just going to transplant them too....oh well...maybe they will come back...Hope so....What a dumb thing to do....love/hate thing I guess...there is carpet in the sunroom...someone asked..if the casters work on the rug..well it does there..it is a low level carpet though. Really...when I plant seeds..it is covered...with 5 lights..we use chain..to hang the lights..low at first then can rise them up....really like this rack...holds lots...from here they go to a cold frame...take a look...holds cuttings..(brugs) if they are not to high too.....since this pic. my DH. added another 2/6 to make it deeper...works great..

Are those made out of 2X6's?

Jerome, MI(Zone 5b)

Yep, 2pugdogs....8 feet long by 4 feet front to back...he added to this one...on top of the first one. makes it deeper..held..together with jouist ? hangers..so it comes apart to store. The windows..are just old windows..junk yard find. Windows are not hinged...easy to put together...and take down...to heat if you want..you can lay on the floor inside -- gutter melters...or roof wires..that you use to melt ice and snow..works..great...careful...you do not let it get too hot in there...lol....

Just got on this thread.
I could use this for different reason's.
Home Depot has them for 69.00..
Now, someone built shelves with Pc pipes and I can't find who it was.
Anyone know who I mean?

TA, I got mine at Lowes. One last year and one the year before last. They are 4' wide and 6' high. Love them, I got a multi-strip outlet for each unit and have the multi-strip on a timer so the lights come on and off on schedule. I used one shelf from one unit on the other unit, so I have 1 with 5 shelves closer together and 1 with 3 shelves farther apart.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I looked at Lowes today, but didn't buy. The nice thing, for me, is that they have them in black, which means that pecan drip won't make them look so dingy. Since I have to go back to Lowes several times in the next month, I'm hoping they will go on sale, which I doubt, but worth a try. BTW, I think the black ones were $44.00, will check Monday and report...

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Don't they call them gorilla stands or something?
The name may help in a search

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

These are the shelves I bought last year. They've gone up in price.

I also have some of the chrome ones.

Brugaddict. Thank you so much and a thank you to scooterbug...

It's a great idea very clever of her and easy to take care of.

I will not be using mine for plants, don't laugh.
I'm going to make them for the flight cages for breeding finches. It's the best way to go.

Got it all togather and found out I had no Brug seeds. LOL
Thought I did, but time and memory at my age seem to go quickly. They were day lily seeds. Anyway got cuttings I took and a lot of flower seeds. I like the rack and the price was right.

Ted, that is a very good looking arrangement you have set up there. those are really thrifty looking coleus. I have 5 out in my gh that are now growing pretty rapidly. Have you ever looked at Glasshouse Works catalog. they have a great selection of coleus. I would be very tempted to try one of those shelf setups, but either have to buy on line or drive 130 miles to a Lowe's. And besides that I am pretty limited in trying to find space for more shelves. Donna

Jerome, MI(Zone 5b)

wow Tarogers...Looks great..I see you have two sets of lights..over the shelfs...mmmmmm need to go buy more...lights...looks great..
76 Summerwind.....funny...right now...mine holds plants..but also..a play gym..for our birds....have to change the gym...when I plant seeds though...the sun room...is for our plants..and.......birds...we have 6...hehehe...keep them away from the brugs..though...lol...smiles...Diana...

well Great minds think alike...
I got the chrome bakers racks also at Lowes for the plants.. a few extras also..
I got some nice red wheels for rolling them about.. from a hardware type place
Also at Lowes.. the plastic storage chests.. they are short maybe 6 " tall.. made to store things under the bed.. they just fit in the racks and provide a good container for either pots or as I've done... they just fit a waterbed heater ....
I placed a 1" thich foam piece from the building department cut to the size of the bottom... put in the waterbed heater .. and covered it with 3 layers of 4 mil plastic.. and filled the container1/2 way up with building sand.. one bag is about enough for each.. when I want to root something or sprout seeds .. I place the pot or container down deep in the sand.. turn it on and there's 90* sand they are immerced in.. it really helps getthem up and going... it works wonders for the plumerias .. and the Brugs are just as happy as can be.. things just really take off... and no rotting or dampening off with the bottom heat.. Or placing some gravel and water in the roll out storage container under the pots .. and there is great humidity
this is on a finished wood floor. new brizilan cherry and to protect it.. I covered it with a sheet of plastic. and to cover the unsightly plastic in the house I got a small section of the green astroturf.. a few of the plastic rock edgeing things from Home Depot and it looks like it's in the garden already.. well got to make some concessions to keeping it looking like my house rather than a place with many 100's of plants living there.. Bad enough the marble firplace harth is the new potting bench... A timmer and some lights... and you're in the nursery business.. perhaps a picture when the surounding area is cleared of the papers..
