I have been getting Spring gardening catalogs for about a month now and waited 'til after the holidays to start lusting... I mean looking- LOL!!!
I have SPRING FEVER ....its official!!! I have that glazed-eye look and plants and seeds are all I can think of now. I'll never make it til March!! My poor DH will get no HOT meals or his house cleaned for the next few weeks while I graze the catalogs. He'll prob. hide my stash when he gets hungry- LOL!!
Of the catalogs I've rec'd so far, my faves are Burpees, Parks, SSE and Select Seeds. I ordered several varieties of heirloom petunia seeds from Select. Other catalogs I just give away to fellow gardeners at work- in fact am taking several to my friend Wanda today. I love sharing them as 'mI not ordering from most of them anyway.
I would like to start this thread to talk about gardening catalogs and for you dear folks to tell what you have ordered so far, what you are going to order, and what your fantasy plants are that you'd like to have someday.
I would like other folks to tell what their fave catalogs are,as I am sure there are tons of them that we've never heard of.
HAPPY and BLESSED NEW YEAR and may all ypur gardening dreams come true this year!!
DEBBIE
SPRING FEVER.... GARDEN CATALOGS!!
Yes, the catalogs have really been coming in...thus far they've just been stacked aside along with unread magazines. I'll only be ordering from a few as I need to grow out many heirloom varieties from which I've saved seeds or acquired through trades. I nearly always order some from Nichols, and I will be sending for the purple tomatillo De Milpa that Seeds of Change carries. There are many fine seed companies that I like, but now I try to order from companies whose climatic conditions are similar to what I deal with here. Especially with tomatoes it seems that some varieties need a couple of years' growout from saved seed to really acclimatize well. Of course, I realize that not all companies grow all of their own seed, so what I'm sometimes getting may actually have been grown under conditions I wouldn't expect. Other catalogs I've used with satisfaction include Johnny's, Vermont Bean, Jung's and Pine Tree. I also have an order ready to go off to a new company called Container Seeds.
I've been grazing them for a month now. And those EMAILs! Did I really agree to receive all these "promotional emails"?? Yep....I think I did.
I just got Select Seeds catalog for the first time ever - must have got me from a mailing list somewhere - and I was DELIGHTED to see they say right on the front cover...."A GARDEN WATCHDOG TOP 20 COMPANY"!!! Loved it. I'll definitely be placing an order with them just for that simple bit of advertising they did for DG.
I've already ordered a few seed pkgs from Parks and have a list going for Thompson Morgan but Select looks to have much better prices on some of the ones on my T-M list.
Yes, I noticed the Garden Watchdog seal on Selects cover, too!
I really love the heirloom petunias and they have a red one that is aromatic. I have never heard of any red's being offered anywhere else. I cannot wait to grow them!
Haven't got the Thompson and Morgan yet. Absloutlely look at it for days at a time til I put it down. It is a great reference tool even if you don't order from them.
I get at least 25 to 30 cataloges a week (not all garden) is that a lot????
I love waiting for the mailman to come everyday,,,,it's like Christmas everyday...and most of them I throw away, and some I clip pages out of...I'm a crafter/sewing nut as well and I always trying to make things I see in catalogs..
If it weren't for HGTV and all the other channels that show "DO IT YOURSELF Projects" I just don't think I could live.....
Anyway, I have my list already made to order from Parks Seeds, they seem to have what I can grow here in Texas...and boy if anyone has ever tried their "Whopper Tomatoes"...they got so big, and my little tiny, tiny garden was so full with tomatoes...my plant was against my 10 ft fence and it grew taller than the fence and they never stopped giving fruit till the end of November....I still have tomatoes I'm eating fresh and more turning red under lights...it's neat,,,,,,!!
What is everyone ordering to get started rooting by way of seeds that is?
rose
I haven't gotten the T-M catalog - just surfing their website. This is my list of seeds from T-M:
Convolvulus Ensign series
Blue Diadem bachelor buttons
Italian White sunflowers
Kelvedon Star rudbeckia
Kingsize Scarlet Delphinium (larkspur)
Red Midget ratbida
Baby Buttons phlox drummondii
Fireball cinquefoil (potentilla)
I've not started a list yet for Select Seeds -- just have dog-earred several pages.
I've not received ONE catalog yet!! What's the problem - is it too cold here in Michigan?? I need something to do other than stare out the window...
I've spent the morning going through Johnny's seed catalog and making my list. :)
I haven't gotten Johnny's yet!
This will have to be a slim year for me as DH will be un-employed at end of Feb.
I have ordered 2 bare-root roses from Bracken Gardens- Abe Lincoln and Ron Reagan. Yes, I like Prez roses- LOL!!
I also ordered heirloom petunia seed from Select Seeds and JL Hudson.
I drooled for hours last night going back thru these catalogs:
Burpee
Parks
Territorial Seed
JL Hudson
Willhite
Tomato Growers Supply
Seeds of Change
SS Exchange
Select Seeds
I want MORE, MORE, MORE!!
I haven't gotten a select seeds catalog yet. I wonder how long I'll be able to hold off before I go to their site and order one? LOL
Joan,
You poor dear- how are you making it??? Go now and order away- you deserve it! Why deprive yourself any longer of all the luscious offerings to be had??
I do not know what I would do with myself [this time of year] if I didn't have my catalogs to drool at.
I might do housework or cook or something mundane like that -LOL!!!
Okay, you talked me into it. I'm gonna go order a Select Seeds catalog. Now watch, my catalog will be in the mail tomorrow morning. LOL
Well, what's a girl supposed to do? I've already been through the catalogs I've received and have wish lists all over the place. I need more catalogs!
We're all just a bunch of drooling catalogaholics I guess!
***********************************************
If anyone wants a very informative, useful catalog that has lots of "woody" perennials and trees in it I would suggest sending for Forest Farms HUGE book. No illustrations but it is a mother lode of info!
We call this "Garden Porn" at my house.
Sylvi,
ROFLMBBO!!!
Isn't that the truth!
The way we lust and drool over the photos of plants is the same way that men do over Playboy, etc...
I LOVE Forestfarm's catalog, but their WEBSITE is even better!!! You get pics on most of their stuff. Plus they're a GWD Top 20!

langbr,
I too love their website and lots of others, too.
But there is just something about having a book in your hand that I like so much better.
Thats why I cant' get into audio books either- LOL!!
