PlantFiles question

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I've finally found the time to go through the PlantFiles, (love the new name), and put my two cents in on the plants I'm growing or have experience with.

For starters, I tried to bring up all the plants that will grow in this area, and put in my updates from there. If they grow in this area, my comments, etc. (I have about 300 floppies of pics that I need to go through yet too.....soon).

But, that list brought up over 30,000 plants, and I got stuck in daylilies for hours. I need to get to bed, but since the pages are only listed to 50, and I'm way beyond that, I can't even write down what page I left off at and start again tomorrow night without starting at page 50 again. I know you can search in daylilies, lilies, etc. exclusively, but that leaves a lot out that I may not even remember that I have experience with in the two places I've lived. Hence the reason I wanted to go through a list of what will grow here, rather than relying on my memory of what all I've grown or have growing.

My question/request is, would it be possible for us to do a search by zone, but be able to exclude everything that's already available by the specialty searches? I can do those later, one section a day or so, but I'd like to be able to search/browse through the other plants also, for ones I may not even think of, but have growing in the area. I may have some input on them or can get a picture if there's none yet.

Maybe this is already possible, but I haven't figured it out?

I did a double-take there, thought there was a whole new feature, not just a new name! Will all the old Plants Database references in forums now hyperlink to PlantFiles automatically?

JoanJ, this is not in regards to your request (Thats a Dave Meister issue) but in regards to the return to the search page beyond displayed pages.
Look at the URL of the search page you left off, it should be looking something like this:http://davesgarden.com/pf/advanced.php?nn[3]=4&sname=Plants&offset=2450.
In the example the page displayed is the one from #2450 of plants found in the search on. So you write down this number (of the one where you left off) and enter it again to get back there without having to start from page 50 again.

Thanks Milan, I'll try that tonight. I'm at work now, so better wait until tonight to play with the plants.

Milan, I tried it over my lunch break, and it works! Thank.

You could just save that page in your favorites.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

If I save that page in my favorites, will it remember the whole search and let me continue on, or will it only remember that page, and not the rest of the pages to come?

I'll have to try it. Thanks.

I'm still thinking that there's got to be a better way to search for plants that will grow in a zone, that aren't in the specialty listings. Those that aren't in the specialty listings will get lost in the shuffle unless you are specifically searching for them, or have either a lot of time to spend or great stamina.

I know there's some plants out there that I could grow, but don't know about them yet, and I'm determined to find them, even if I have to take the long way around. LOL

I started this project to put my 2 cents into the PlantFinder, but now I'm also thinking that I'd like to know if there are plants out there that are hardy here, but I've not discovered them yet. An ulterior motive.

I just did a test and it brought me right back to where I left off. Let us know if it works for you too.

Are you using the Advanced Search feature?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I was playing with it also. Yes, I am using the advanced search. It does bring me right back to where I left off, and also allows me to go on and read the rest of the pages originated from the original search. I was afraid that I would only be able to view that particular page I saved to favorites, but it appears to save the whole search.

I'm loving this! It works great. Now I don't have to worry about having to stay up until I get to the end of the list, because I can pick up where I left off.

THANK YOU!

*smile* You are welcome!!!
