We're changing the name of the Plants Database

First, a little history.

Over 4 years ago, on October 11th, 2000, I planted the seed of the Plants Database project when I asked our 67 members what they thought about an idea:

Quoting:
I am wondering if there is a website out there that has complete information on the (for example) top 200 most popular plant varieties, with pictures, instructions for sowing the seeds, care for the plant, etc.

Later that day I clarified:

Quoting:
I'm actually considering building our own database of plants. It would take quite a bit of work, so I only want to do it if nobody else is doing it already.

And that evening, I actually referred to it as "a Plants Database".

Quoting:
As you said, these are specifically for germination info, and not really what I'm looking for in a Plants Database.

It wasn't a name, but it was descriptive of what I wanted to create. A couple weeks later, on October 26th, 2000, I suggested we upgrade our existing plant FAQ over to a fullblown "plants database".

Then on October 31st, 2000, I actually announced the completion of the feature that we were calling the "Plants Database". http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/502/Plants%20Database/#first

As time went on, we continued calling it by its generic name: "Plants Database". I don't think it ever crossed our mind to call it anything other than what it was.

"The Plants Database" came to be its actual name, although it wasn't really ever intended to be branded as such. We never sat down to find a name, nor did any of us think that it would become such a massive and well-known standalone project... we just called it by what it was and that became its de facto name. It was a little sideproject of a site that only a few weeks earlier had become known as "Dave's Garden".

Now here we are today, and as I look around the gardening community, I see that we have been using a name that rightfully belongs to someone else. The USDA has been using the name "PLANTS database" http://plants.usda.gov for many years longer than we have (since at least as early as 1995, according to my contact there). Because we want to be good neighbors to our friends in the gardening community, and in an effort to differentiate ourselves from everyone else, we have chosen to select a new name for the Plants Database.

Terry, Trish and I spent quite a long time brainstorming on ideas, and Terry suggested the actual name. Following a lengthy discussion (and a vote) with our Uber gardeners, the new name was selected.

Therefore, as of today, December 28th, 2004, I am pleased to announce that the feature formerly known as the "Plants Database" is now known as "PlantFiles". The new name is simple and easy to type (and is accessible via plantfiles.com) and is unique and unused on the web. It is truly our own name and has no clashes. Yay!!

I hope everyone likes the new name, or will come to like it. If you have any questions (or if you find any problems that might be caused by the name change, such as new bugs, etc), please post them here!

Sounds good to me!

(Zone 8b)

PlantFiles with no space or hyphen? and a capital on the central F, or is that an accident Dave? I ask because it looks so different alongside the other tags on the home page.

Yes, PlantFiles, no space or hyphen. Patterned after PlantScout.

I'm definitely happy with the name change, but unless I've forgotten (no senility jokes, please!) I think credit for it should go to our Ubers - they tossed around many names, and when the dust settled this was one of them ;o)

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

I like it!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

When I came to DG this morning, the first thing I did was to go to the PDB to look up one of my plants.....I was surprised to see the tab was different. I immediately came to this forum to see if there was a thread from Dave about the name change.

This works for me. lol

Thanks Dave and all for letting us know why the name was changed.

Thanks for clearing that up Dave.
It was a bit of a shock.

But a "Rose by any other name.......................

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Makes good sense to me, dave et al!

Easy name to remember, too!

By the way...I was trying to change PDB in my search bar to PF (PlantFiles) but it won't change over. Is that not yet possible to do? (I clicked on "Add the PF Search to your Firefox browser!" but it won't add it, possibly cus PDB is there?)

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

At least you know we are paying attention! It's the first thing I noticed when I logged in, too, and i dashed right over to get the low-down!

I don't care whatcha call it - it's the best darn data collection on plants I've ever been able to find! In fact another DG'er and I were recently joking about how often DG pops up when your doing a global search on almost any plant. Very cool!

You guys are great!

The new name looks nice on the tab and it is still the best source for plant information on the web.

Now for something I always wondered, What is a UBER?? Please don't laugh! Legit

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

It's growing on me more. I like that it's still easy to abbreviate PF. Legit click on the uber below one of their names and it will explain it to you.

Dave, I'm having the same trouble that Shoe did, except I uninstalled the PDB search selection from the Mozilla search sidebar before I clicked on "Add the PF Search to your Firefox browser!".

I looked in C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxsearchplugins, and found that neither the .src nor the PNG image files had been copied...

Other than that, no probs! :)

Check this link for information about the Ubers:

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

On the opening page of the newsletter it still says PDB. Worked good tho, went right to PF. Will that be changed when the next newsletter arrives?

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Well, I understand why you had to do it, just hope you don't mind if I call it the "PlantFiles Database of DG". "Files", just don't seem complete enough for me, especially if I want to brag to someone about them. Hummm PFDODG?

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

and when my fingers misspell as they frequently do I'll get plantflies which seem to bug me a lot (LOL)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I just noticed the name change tonight. It reminds me of the X-Files. That could be fun.... :)

Rapid City, SD(Zone 5b)

Hey GW....I thought of the X-files too....cool name. The new reference name will be easier to distribute to people who are looking for plant info. We can just suggest that they check out PlantFiles.com

Great change for the New Year!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, yes, It all fits now...

A huge repository containing the dirt about plants around the globe, everything from common weeds to exotic and tempermental hybrids. It's all computerized. They have thousands of informants, agents who know just about everything about these plants. What they don't know, they have a way of finding out...Then it'll be there, too.

It's a conspiracy, I tell you.

southwestern, IA(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the history and the update Dave!

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

'Plantarium' might have worked too?

Ulrich,

There were probably over a hundred good names submitted, but PlantFiles is what we finally selected. Incidentally, most of the names, just as Plantarium, were already taken by someone else.

Can't win'em all. PlantFiles is great.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Will the old hyper links to the database in old threads still work?

Congratulations on the new metamorphosis, btw, ya'll.

Yes, all old hyperlinks will continue to work forever.

GW... the truth is out there... hehehe!

Have a great day ;)

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm liking the new name; so logical and easy! :) :)

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

Dave, I'm having the same trouble I mentioned a bit earlier in this thread (12.28).

Advice please? :)
Donna

Donna,

I don't know - it's not working for me, either. The plugin validates perfectly and therefore should work but it's just not installing for me. I click to install and click on "Ok" but then nothing happens.

I'm guessing this might be a bug in FF1.0.
