Did anyone receive (or buy for themselves!) a wonderful new garden book for Christmas? Tell us your favorite!
My daughter gave me "My Garden (Book)" by Jamaica Kincaid. A lovely lyrical story of her garden and how it relates to other themes in her life. For those looking for relief from the winter doldrums (and a change from the nuts and bolts of January seed catalogs) look to J. Kincaid for some 'garden storytelling' ! Besides being a gardener, Ms. Kincaid is a writer for the New Yorker magazine and teaches at Harvard.
What do you recemmend?! It's going to be a long winter--
What's your favorite (Christmas) Garden Book?!?
Well I just recently purchased the Book Monika put out on Brugs, befor that it was
Complete Guide to Gardening by Better Homes and Gardening
I recieved 3 ........'One Hour Garden' by Joanna Smith // 'Gardening 101' (Martha of course) //
and 'How to get rid of Garden Pests and Diseases' by Andrew Mikolajski , but hands down..........
Daves Garden is where I'll get most of my info, I've so enjoyed scanning all the ifo on the threads.
momof2d your right but when you have read all the posts that interest you, and you can't sleep then you need a garden book :)
Yes, I love reading the DG posts and get lots of info from them, but sometimes I like to read something that weaves a (garden) story together--
There is (or can be) something mystical or spiritual about gardening, or having a garden....well, that's another story, I guess....anyway different themes to explore like making a house a home, or the Victorian (or modern, i.e., the Herondwoods' proprietor) plant seekers/botanists who have contributed to human development because of wonderful exotic adventures, or the story of plants and medicine (or witchcraft).
I think, by the way, there is a good story in the whole concept of 'Dave's Garden' and the different themes the website explores--plants and gardening, but also friendship, support, global knowledge exchange....it really boggles the mind--all the different aspects and themes interwoven into this website when you parse it out a little....'could be a book in it' as they say! (Or a movie?!)
What is the book Monika put out on Brugs? Do we have other authors and writers represented on the site? It would be interesting to know that...
I love the Martha 101 books. Whatever you may think about her these days, she has some good books out there! Now 'How to get rid of pests and diseases' sounds a little too 'in your face' for me these days! That sounds like a book for June reading! t.
tabasco, the book Monika wrote is Angels Trumpets, and it is writen in German, but you get an English translation book with it, It is all about Daturas and Brugmansias, very interesting, I ordered it through calalily, here on Daves.
I googled Monika's book "Engelstrompeten" or "Angel's Trumpets"
http://www.monika-gottschalk.de/
and checked out her website. Very beautiful website although I can't read german....the book translation is available here in the states, though...that helps me out a lot. Beautiful picture on the cover.
Now I am reading "Onward and Upward in the Garden" by Katherine White. A reprint of essays Ms. White wrote for the New Yorker magazine in the '50s and '60s. Good introduction to info about garden lore/history and personalities. And she is quite a clever (and opinionated) writer.
Not sure what to read next...any ideas?
