I thought I was getting some buds on my Kyle's Pink but wasn't positive because they were so small. When I checked yesterday I found this big bud. It is a bud isn't it? Can anyone give me an idea as to how long it will take to flower? I can hardly wait.
My First Bud
Thanks Donna. Of course I owe it all to Jeanne since it's one of the plants she gave me about 7 weeks ago. It's amazing that it went from having no leaves to this in that short amount of time.
How big is your plant, Sandy?

Sandy: That's so exciting. I remember when I got my first blooms. It seemed like forever, but it can take 2-4 weeks for them to bloom. I would go out 2-3 times a day, minimum, to look at them, talk to then, encourage them, swear them for being so slow. And then when the did bloom, it's like heaven on earth. it's all worth it, and them some.
Donna: I don't have a Kyles Pink, but I have many. The largest is 9' tall. I have 4 plants blooming at the moment, it's lovely.
Looking good Sandy!
Oops, sorry Linda. Got you Islanders' names mixed up. :~/
edited to say You're a lucky ducky too!

LOL Yes, that's exactly what I've been doing Linda. It will be a lot of fun watching the buds grow over the next month. I wonder if this is one of the type that waits until all the blooms are ready before they open all at once.
If you're wondering how tall my plant is Donna, it's 7' tall. I have 4 plants that are 7' - 8' tall. It's was interesting getting them into my car to bring them home.
Ohhhh, my biggest Brug is only 3 and a half feet tall. Guess she has a ways to grow yet... Dang...sigh
I have some that are that tall. It'll be awhile before they Y never mind bloom, so I know how you feel. It's still hard for me to believe that I even have actual plants though, considering that on Oct. 1st I didn't even have a cutting.
Hmmm, I'm not really sure Donna, but I would say that branches off the main stem are not the same as a Y. I think what you have are branches. I think the Y is when your new stem forks at the growing tip.
It is confusing though, isn't it. I've seen pictures of 6" cuttings with flowers. I guess that's because they're tips of branches that have rooted, have continued to grow and are still Y-ing. I think when you get a cutting that has been cut off on top, it will branch and the new branch or branches will become the main growing stem or stems. When they get to a certain height then they will Y and then you will start to get buds. I hope I haven't made too much of a fool of myself in saying all this because I certainly am no expert. LOL Wait until a year from now though, eh? We'll both have so much experience by then it'll be astounding.
I think it looks more like the upper new growth is a branch that came from a node that was near the top of the cutting. If you know what I mean. It looks like it was a very tall cutting. How tall was it? Was it cut off at the top and the bottom? It's my experience that once the new growths start forming Ys they do it pretty frequently. I'll take some pictures of mine for you tomorrow and you can see what I mean. It might help.
Sandy
Donna, it's hard to say from your photos. Sandy, I think you've done a good job of explaining the Y's. I'll take pictures of some of mine tomorrow as well.
It's difficult getting good close up pictures isn't it? I think sometimes the pictures aren't clear because we try to get too close.
Sandy
Thanks for the photos, Sandy. It does really help to see what other plants look like, especially when you have nothing to compare to. Yes, my plant "bump" looks just like yours in photos #2 &4. Wonder why they cut off the branch that was there before? Like you said, this time next year hopefully we will have all the answers too, huh? Thanks so much again. BTW, you have some mighty fine looking plants there, girl!
Thanks Donna, they really like it out in the solarium I think, especially on a beautiful sunny day like today. Your cutting looks pretty good too. It's much taller than any of my cuttings. When did you start it? What kind is it? I don't know why anyone would cut it off where they did because it doesn't look like it's very thick at the top so it was probably a tip. Perhaps they were like me. One of mine is like that. I was the one who cut it and I did it that way because I didn't know any better at the time. Knowing what I know now I would have left it. Such is life...like I say, in a year from now I won't be an expert but I'll certainly have lots of experience....I hope (unless everything dies on me).
How are your seeds doing? Please post a picture for me. Thanks.
Sandy
What I know about brugs isn't as much as many, but maybe I can help out here.
I'll post 2 photos I took today, of leaves. One is below the Y. The leaves are 'equal' there. The leaves above the Y, are 'unequal'. When you see 'unequal leaves, you should see buds and blooms.
This time of year, it's not uncommon for some of the branch to die back. I have a cutting like yours Donna, that was a Y, but one side died back, so it looks similar to yours.
equal leaf: both sides of the leaf start at the same place.
unequal leaf: one side of the leaf starts before the other, as much as 1-2" on some of mine.
Below is an equal leaf, from my peaches and cream. ignore the spider mites, they are being treated
Linda: Well, I'll be!!! Learning something about above and below the "Y" and equal and unequal leaves. I didn't know that and it will be useful, thanks for that info. Also about the branch "dying back". I wouldn't have thought of that! Good to know. I'll be an expert before ya know it. Thanks so much Linda for the photos and the lesson. Much appreciated.
Sandy: I got my Isabella plant (above) at the beginning of October. It was already about 2 1/2 ft high when I got it, (counting the root ball) Lost all of it's leaves and then quickly grew new ones and shot up another foot since then. My seedlings are coming along. I have a Rose of Sharon that is coming along nicely. Two other of those seedlings died??? My Apple Blossom Brug seedlings are all coming along nicely. I still have a half dozen or so in the tray covered with Saran until they have all 4 leaves (thet're gettin' there, and three seedling that are in their own pot on "the outside" that are doing ok. So far so good, anyway. I lost a couple of them when I transplanted. There again,...???? I also have two other Brug cuttings, (October ) a Knightii and a CG that are healthy and growing well. Here are some pictures: First my Charles Grimaldi (and Callie wanted equal time!)
Those are good pictures Donna. I agree with you...it's nice to see pictures of others peoples' plants. It gives you something to compare your own plants with so you can see if you're doing all right.
Callie's so cute...coming to see what mom is up to. Your cuttings sure look nice and healthy. They look like they're growing beautifully. Seedlings are a little trickier I think. Are you growing them under lights? I discovered that they really like that. I just transplanted some into individual pots last night and so far they look alright. I haven't lost any seedlings yet. Too bad about the ones you lost. It's tough when you lose two thirds of one kind.
Your Aromatherapy Fountain looks pretty cool. Does it make the house smell lovely? I've never seen one before.
Linda, thanks for the pictures. They show very clearly the difference in the leaves. I had read about it but now I understand much better what I need to look for. In fact, I'll have to go into the solarium tomorrow in the light and look at my leaves. It'll give me one more thing to look at every day.
Sandy
Oh my, getting so big! How exciting... 8-]
I was just going to e-mail you Sandy, to let you know my Red Sanguinea x Red Sanguinea Brug seeds arrived in the mail today. Thank you. They are soaking in a nice bath as I write. Wishing the four of us luck growing these beauties. I can hardly wait to get at it.
Thanks. It's enjoyable seeing the bud develop. I must say, I am pretty excited at the prospect of a bloom.
That's great Donna. Thanks for letting me know you received them. We'll have to compare notes as they grow.
Sandy it looks great.
Donna, my sang seeds that I had rotted, and the sang. cutting I recieved from Jeanne, has died. I hope you have better luck.
