Aww, that is unfortunate Linda. I, too, hope we have better luck. Any particular reason that you pinpoint?
My First Bud
That was unfortunate that you lost yours Linda. Any tips? I'm sure mine aren't out of the woods yet.
They do look very big and healthy, Sandy. I'm not discouraged , but I too, would like to know what to avoid doing or what Linda suggests could have been the problem.
The seeds went mouldy, I had them on a warming mat, and sterlized soil, covered with a plastic hood to make the GH effect. I didn't think they were too wet. The cutting, it has a heck of a time rooting in water, so I rolled it in root starter and shoved it in dirt.
A lot of my seeds have gotten mould on them, even though they were treated like the above. The seeds I started last year (brugs) were started the same way, and did really well. I noticed a lot of my seeds, when I had them soaking before planting, had a slimy film on them, so maybe they weren't the best seeds to be starting. I'm all ears for suggestions on how to have better luck this year with seedlings. as it stands, I don't have any brug seedlings growing. Probably just as well, where would I put them whe they grew up? I'm having to fight Cheryl for window light as it is. ( and she's winning! )
What is Cheryl growing in the window?
Cheryl's got african violets, peace lilies, ferns, and a bunch of other stuff. The inside plants are her thing, I'm more the outside plants and tropical girl.
I know what you mean Linda. I did have one type of brug seeds that all went mouldy and mushy. They were in the same tray as others that were fine. Same with cuttings. I just planted up a couple that were in the same bucket as one I had to throw out because it went all mushy. Some are obviously easier than others or like you said, maybe they just weren't in the best of condition to begin with.
Congratulations on your JANUARY blooms-to-be!!!! Way to go.
Sandy, your Sanguina seedlings are beautiful, they look really good.
There was a really cool link on the Brugmansia & Friends forum today that I found interesting. Got lots of great pictures of seeds and pods and pests. Also bought a pkg of Brug seeds.. Monika has a lot of her gorgeous Brugs on there. I never get tired of looking at her hybrids.

For those of you who would like to try some seeds, check out the Seed Bank
Wow, what a relief to get down near the bottom of this thread and find out what a Kyle's Pink is! I'd never even HEARD of "brugs" before I got onto Dave's forums. Too big I think to live in the house?
Would probably love to live in your Greenhouse.
LOL Sorry about that Rosemary. I didn't realize I didn't say what kind of plant it was. Just goes to show you what brug addicts we've got here. You could have one in the house maybe but I have a feeling your house is a tad overcrowded in the winter knowing that you don't keep your GH heated.
Speaking of the bud, I got home today and my mom said, "I hate to tell you this but your bud has fallen off." Talk about heart failure. I ran out to the solarium but thank goodness it was still there. It turned out that my dad had found a leaf stem that had fallen off. I don't think they realize how big the bud is now.
Keeping an eye on this thread........next year I plan on planting some of these tricky devils.
OH oh, Pam: I think you might get hooked. I know it is all I can do not to dive right in there, especially with Liz around the corner. She has been kind enough to let me have some of her dupicates, and seeds.
There is an excellent thread on The Brugmansia & Friends forum that Rootdoctor started last spring about the "Genetic "Y" of Brugs. They punched it up again and added a little more info. Remember Sandy, we were discussing the "Y" not too long ago. If anyone has any questions and haven't checked it out yet, by all means do so. He has great pictures to go along with his explanations. Saved it as a favourite for future reference.
Glad to hear your Bud is "intact"!

Oh Sandy, I bet your heart stopped in your throat when you heard that. Glad that it's still hanging on., any more pics?
I'm really looking forward to it Dawn. :)
It sounds like you've already got more than a toe in the water Dawn.
Yes, I was a little upset at the thought that my bud was no more. I haven't taken any more pictures but will update when it makes a leap in growth. I don't want anyone to think I'm too obsessed.
I'll go check out that thread about the Y Donna. Thanks. I'm also interested to hear about what you get from the seed bank. I've visited that website often to get information and look at the pictures but hadn't looked at the seed bank info.
Oh my gosh...........how many brug-nutties are we going to have on our trip?????????????
pretty much the whole crew i think elaine
Uh oh, too obsessive right? Well, I'm sure after the hundredth bloom I won't be taking this many pictures of each one. LOL
Way to go girl, looks like you are definately about to be a mama! That baby looks like it's about ready to bloom. Congrats. Can't wait to see the pictures when she does!
Sunrize...You've got mail.
Quick question. (Hope Sandy doesn't mind me hyjacking her thread, but I know she has started a new one.) How warm should a brug be when it wants to make buds? I have that pathetic little stick still, that is now a three-branched shrub, about two and a half feet tall and it looks like it is making very tiny little buds. I have been keeping it in a barely heated room. I would have to put it somewhere that my kitties won't chew on the leaves that are poisonous?
Brenda
Heavens....I don't mind a bit Brenda. I can't answer the question about the heat because I'm not sure about that. But as far as the kitties go I don't think you have to worry. I think my cat chewed on a leaf that had fallen on the floor but she just threw it up and was fine. Her bed is in my bay window and she's gradually getting crowded by growing brug cuttings. She doesn't touch them except to try to scratch her cheek against the leaves a bit.
