Lettuce in Winter

Dayton, WA

Hello all! I singly own and operate "Wild Bill's Organic Gardens" in this S.E. WA. State town. My specialty is lettuce, and at peak season I'll have over 40 different varieties growing. Currently, I'm growing lettuce in a greenhouse, but it's slow going because of the short daylight hours. I'm new to Dave's Gardens and really looking forward to sharing knowledge and experiences with other gardeners.

Hello there, how big is your greenhouse? Sounds like a lot of work and a lot of good eats--fresh lettuce in the winter, how nice.

The man with the "KMOWLEDGE" great, cause for some reason lettuce is my nemisis. Growing in the winter would be nice under growlights. Any experience or advice there with lighting/soil...??

Dayton, WA

This is the first Winter that I have tried to grow lettuce in a greenhouse. I'm finding that it will grow under low-light, and short day lengths, but not very fast. The seedlings I planted there on the first of October are now about 4 inches high. I have another group of seedlings in another section of the greenhouse that I planted two weeks ago and they are thriving under 25 watt shop lights.
Lettuce is a heavy nitrogen feeder, so your soil needs to be really rich for the best results.
My lettuce gets copious amounts of water. In fact, I don't believe it's possible to over-water lettuce!
