It got to 38 degrees here where I am located..near Beaumont Texas...
Well..did it get cold at your place?
It got to 27 here last night!
31 here last night, I had the little space heater on in the greenhouse. Looks like another great weather weekend forcasted. Yea, I can finish getting the 13 yards of mulch moved from the front of the fence by the side of the road to the needy beds. I have been spreading thick layers of wet newspaper first, then covering it with 5 or 6 inches of mulch. Should be great to dig in this spring to plant all the things I have ordered from these DG Coops!!! SEEYA, Margie aka Queen of Dirtland
One thermometer said 42, all the others said 44. It's warming back up now.
Down to mid 30s here south of Beaumont. No damage to anything that I could find. The banana trees are still green. Ginger is still blooming.
Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, it got to 18 at the McKinney airport. I just know it was down to 32 on the ceiling of my covered porch because that's where my silly husband put the digital wireless themometer. My potted Meyers Lemon was pulled onto the porch and covered with a sheet. No damage! :) I did not check the themometer this morning, but Weatherbug said it got to 35 last night.
It got down to 23 Wednesday night, I believe it was then anyway. Luckily, through some advice on this forum, I had gone to WalMart and purchased a small, oscillating, ceramic fan to put in my greenhouse. It worked like a charm.
Living on the banks of the river and being almost on the coast saved us again. I could see the frost line but we were spare any damage. So far I have no frost damage on anything and I sure hope I can manage to get through the rest of the winter the same way....I have quite a few brugs planted in the ground that are to tall to even cover.
Dee
Got down to 29 here. I think I got everything covered or moved in time though. I don't like the cold. I am fine with the 50's ad tolerate the 40's but anything below that is downright unconfortable.
I hear ya Jester! What about that forecast for Christmas? It's supposed to be down to 27 here tonight...looking at the teens possibly later this week. :(
The local weather forcasted 28, but the national weather service is saying 36. I hope the NWS is right! Twenty eight is too cold, it will ruin the citrus crop and possibly kill the trees.
Well they will be breaking out the smudge pots and doing all they can to save the trees and the crops but I do think this winter is going to be a bit tougher this year. It is starting off colder than most for us deep south folks. It is suppose to be 31 here tomorrow night and I know we have not seen that in December for many years, end of January or Febuary sure enough, but this is to soon. We could be in for a cold winter and lose a lot of plants this year.
Folks are out covering the Sagas and the other tropicals and I am trying to figure out where I can put my bananas I got from Rootdr so it will stay pretty for next year, it is to big to move very far at almost 10 and in about a 45 gallon pot. Think I will throw sheets over it and put a light under it and see if that will do the trick, it usually dosn't get to bad this close to the river but we can get fooled to..........
Dee
I'm sure dreading this new weather system here, too.
Hubby said he heard on the radio tonight that there is a possiblity we might have light SNOW by Thursday!
I haven't seen snow here for a really long time (more than 10 years) and I'm not ready to see it again. Most all of my plants that need to be moved are in the temporary "greenhouse" and there's no room in the house for many more.
We don't usually get this cold of weather here until Jan-Feb.
MsC
Sure could be, the weather is changing and we are supposed to be getting colder this week so I hope I can protect what I have. I know it is suppose to start to rain by Wedneday morning, early so I guess I better pay attention to the weather and be ready to take a few more brug cuttings. Alot are in the ground and not to much I can do to protect them so cutting will have to do.
Just hope it dosen't get to bad we are just not equipted to deal with this typed of weather.
Dee
They are still saying 3 days of cold nights here, possibly down to 31 in the lower valley, even colder in the upper valley.
Will someone tell our great white north friends to keep their cold air to themselves. Anything below 42 should be illegal. Yuk. Time to move the palms and cold tender cycads in. Bananas and Bromelaids already in doors as are my new Elephant Ears.
Oh shoot, my ears are in the ground. It's going to take all my blankets to cover my plants and I'll have to turn the heat up in the house to stay warm! Wonder if the doggie would miss his bed if I used it to cover a plant?
Good thing something like this only happens once in a great while, or 2 coons ages. I am glad to have some cold weather but it can keep the freezing a little further north. I am just getting some of my tropicals going good.
I saw on the weather channel this morning that Christmas day is suppose to be 25 in Galveston....was raining this morning and rain is forcasted for tomorrow...... wow now that I won't be able to escape. Guess I had better start some covering up of my own. Sure hope they revise that forcast by then. .......

Lol,That gets my vote...there's no more room in here for more plants and too late for a sale...
Calily you may be ok being that far south but Dee & I are doomed....:)
I've been using card board boxes turned over up side down on somethings...I ran out of sheets & blankets yesterday...
So much for year round gardening...lol
I am just hoping for the best, I have Isabellas,Ing Pinks, and some other crosses that are about 14 ft and I sure am unhappy to think they will be damaged. They are in flower now and sooo pretty, to bad this may be the last week for awhile. I will put all I can in the wash room and Jucuzzi room and cover all I can reach but alot will be lost until spring. ............
I am going to try and dig up my Tiara and see if I can salvage a larger plant that way I know it will drop all it's blooms and buds but man I hate to start from a cutting again...
Sure hope we can miss this one Lottie.
Dee
I hope it goes out in the Gulf and leaves us all alone! I have started bringing stuff in and was thinking about taking some of my Christmas lights out and wrapping them around and over some of the real tender stuff.
My kitties wouldn't go outside even though it was 80 today, they must be afraid they will get left out in the cold.
I'm north of you guys, but this air is coming from far north of here. Better send a note to some of those in Alaska and Canada. I'm not liking it either. We are looking at 7 below zero on Wednesday or Thursday night. Too darned cold for December.
Brugie, We have an extra couch if you wanta get the heck outta there...lol. Temps like that are unimaginable! I'd just keel over an die of frost fright.:)
Calalily the lights are a good idea,I did that one year and then drapped plastic over it to keep the wind off of some...it did worked ok for a temporary set up.
I plan on lighting my chimena for the plants on the patio and pray!
Well as usual they are changing the temps again, it is going to be 34 tomorrow night, 33 Thursday and 33 on Saturday.........so maybe just maybe I won't get frost. I am keeping my fingers crossed and still covering everything I can. As I said the river protects me so I just might get lucky...but maybe not to............It was stupid of me to plant my only double Brugs in the ground I had I feeling when I did it I was gonna regret it but it just looked like such a good spot.
Cala I think the lights are a good idea to I have some I didn't use and I guess I could try that and see if it works. Sure couldn't hurt, seems to have worked for Lottie. ........
Poor Shirley don''t think there is much help for you, just stay wrapped up for the next few months and try and stay warm. I'm afraid yall are in for a cold spell.
It is beginning to rain a bit now off and on, weather person said 40 percent tonight. Hope it won't be to messy to get my work finished outside tomorrow. At least all my Christmas shopping is done and all I have to do now is some baking and cooking for Saturday.

Thanks Dee... I missed the weather tonight and I was praying the temps would change closer to the actual days predicted to be so cold.
If it rains really good and soaks them it seems to protect them , so rain is good.
I think I will make one last pass around and see if anything else needs to come in, just incase it gets colder than expected.
warm prayers for you all...
MsC
Well, at least I am somewhat ready for this round of cold. I was in Washington D.C. for the cold last week. Lost a lot of stuff that I was planning on saving. The GH is stuffed right now so maybe it was the survival of the fittest last week. Ruthm
They're still saying 31 Thursday night, 27 Friday night and 34 Saturday night. One station is still saying 25 for Friday. I hope they are wrong.
They were talking about some kind of heater on a pole with an umbrella type top supposed to heat a big outdoor area. They didn't give a price though. I'm wrapping lights around my stuff that's too big to cover.
If its any use to you all - In the Mediteranean where it occasionaly gets pretty chilly, but not often, they use fans to keep the air moving round the tender stuff - like in the orange groves. It stops the frost settling and damaging the buds and blossoms. hope that helps someone.
One foot in Texas and one in OK and there is 3 inches of snow out there now.
32 today and 16 tonight. Early for snow here. Winter has finaly arrived for North Texas.
North west corner of Fort Worth at 10 mins to 2 this afternoon. they are forcasting 17 for tonight - "Oh my ears and whiskers" this is colder than the UK!!! It is 40 years since it was that cold in the UK and that was the January, after the JFK assasination. I was at basic military training camp and we were in the open field under canvas!
Carol
The wind has started here, it's fallen from 80 back to 75.
Very cool here now temps have dropped about 20 degrees in the last hour so I am sure we may be in for a nasty night tonight.Mixed sleet and rain is predicted for later tonight and maybe tomorrow. I have take cutting of my doubles, pink beauty, HG, Isabellas as well as all the others I can't move in or protect. All I can do for now.
Dee
We have a wind chill of 13 right now!!
I'm at work on the ambulance tonight...praying everyone stays inside! Getting a little icy!
Cold and windy here, no snow so far and I hope it stays away!
Jdee, I love your picture of the Oak tree with snow and that's as close as I wanta get to any snow...lol
My BONES hurt already...Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Makes me think of that song " ....But Baby It's Cold Outside!"....
MsC
It was 32 this morning, with a wind chill of 24, here in Cypress, Texas! Everybody keep warm!!!
