my DS can't wait to try that adding and subtracting fuel. LOL

You're kidding, Lani! That's sure a novel approach. I wish I could do that with my brain, just plunk it into various bodies....

{Insert harp sounds}

"Today I'm going to the beach. Hmmm, think I'll wear my tall, thin blonde body...."

"Oh! A weekend of skiing? Sure! Just let me slip into my muscular model with the great knees!"

"You want to go scuba diving? Okay, but first I need to stop home and change into my petite body with the great lungs."

LOL My son swears it is a true story and he will make arrangements for me to watch him swap the engine sometime.

Ponds that's the best VW story ever! And GW what a quick mind you have. I wanta do that too. I need to install mine in a body that fels up to cleaning this mess out.

RR I bet that's the best Christmas present he ever got. A girlfriend is still driving her original red VW and it is now a sort of orangey-pink as the desert sun has had over 30 years to fade the paint. LOL

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

It only takes about 20 - 30 mins to change a VW engine. Not me, I've never done it but lots of peple do. Lots of Vdubbers have a spare engine - in case of need. The VW world is a wonderful world. You can travel all over the world and always have a friendly voice/help nearby if you have a prob. on the side of the road.
A couple of years ago a single mom had a fire in her van (new fuel lines first thing when you acquire a VW) The VW community rebuilt one for her in just a few weeks. As a gift.

Just wonderful people - and cars. and vans. and things. I'll be driving my 71 hippymobile (my kiddos name for it) till the day I drop. Has been from AK to Panama 3 times and everywhere inbetween. Square yuppie kids you know.

Best thing of all is that you can fix most things yourself. No computer to worry about. No huge repair bills. parts easy to find.

Classics, aren't they!

Finally found photos of the bugs that my (then) BF and I had in 1974. We received payment from Beetleboard advertising to let them decorate the cars. Of course, I had the Irish Spring-with the muscled arm coming out of the tub. I wanted the Herbal Essence one that he had-much prettier. Acutaly, I really wanted the Budweiser one-it had a pull tab coming out of the top, and Budweiser was and is, a favorite of the UW students.
Was great fun, driving from Madison WI to Florida in the decorated bugs!!

How cool is that? I didn't realize consumer car ads had been around that long. Were they water decals?

south central, WI(Zone 5a)

I think that the company went out of business. The photos were taken in '74. I think that the decals were plastic stick on. Not easily removed. Anyway, we got a monthly fee for the advertising and the contract promised to re-paint the car if the paint had faded around the decals when the deal was up. As it happened, I rolled into a car ahead of me, didn't even bend their license plate, but smashed the whole front end. (The contract had been up for a bit)
A fellow bought the car from me when it was in the body shop. Thus the end of my Beetle ownership. It sure was fun though. One of those odd-almost automatic ones-with 2 gears-great for someone who couldn't drive a stick at that time. John had his re-painted and jazzed up with dual pipes before he became a non-hippie. Lost touch with him not long after that.
I really liked that car of his though. I was not as thrilled with my "muscle car"!!!
