Good Additions to Christmas Tree Water?

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

We just got our tree today and its been soaking in just water all day. Do you think it would help to add hydrogen peroxide or Superthrive to the water at all? The only advice I got today from our radio expert was that nothing added will help, but warm to hot water would do a better job than cold water. BTW, we got our tree from HD, so it is *not* a fresh tree. (But it is pretty...)

pins, I don't think hydrogen peroxide would hurt, and it's cheap enough to try. Might even help.

I assume you cut another chunk off the base to (hopefully) expose some viable conduits for the water?

Yep, they did it at the store, and then again when we got home.

Thanks, Darius.

A shot of Vodka was touted on one of our local morning TV shows last week.

I would advise being careful what you put in the water. One year, we bought probably the freshest tree we had ever found. We always put the tree in a bucket of water for a week or so before bringing it in the house. Within a few days, the tree was dried out and burnt looking. I couldn't figure it out and was so disappointed.

But I brought it in and decorated it anyway. On the 25th, about 20 minutes before the dinner guests were to arrive, the whole thing crashed over, ornaments and all, soaking the rug and gifts underneath. (I always give the kids a 'stack' of books which they open on the night of the 25th to help prolong Christmas and give them something to look forward to.)

Of course my hubby is trying to tell me I overloaded the tree with ornaments (it's probably true) but it looked to me like the trunk had rotted through. Well, come to find out, hubby had thought it would help prolong the tree to put fertilizer in the water when we brought it home!!!!! So everything became quite clear when he fessed up to that.

I always read a lot of 'formulas' to put in the tree water to help preserve it, but after that experience, I am very cautious!

Vodka? What's that supposed to do?

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

I put Sprite in our water. I use hot,hot water (this melts any sap that has dried on the trunk. The Sprite has the sugar it likes to suck up. So far, our trees have lasted until New Years and we buy them the day after Thanksgiving.

Found this doind a Google search. Sounds interesting but please go and read the whole article, link at bottom.

Quoting:
The mixture is: Add the following to 2 gallons of HOT WATER: 2 cups of Karo syrup, 2 oz. of liquid bleach plus 2 pinches of Epsom salt, 1/2 teaspoon of Boraxo (all available at the grocery store), and 1 teaspoon of chelated iron (available at garden centers). Make a fresh cut at the bottom of the tree trunk and stand the tree in this solution until it is brought inside. After it is set up, use this solution for watering the tree.

Why does it work? The Karo syrup provides SUGAR, and it is only in the presence of sugar that tremendous amounts of water will be taken up by the exposed tissue at the base of the tree trunk. Thanks to the BORON (in the Boraxo), the water and sugar will be moved to every needle and branch of the tree - boron is what makes sugar move, not only in trees, but vegetables, fruits, and even houseplants. And the EPSOM SALTS and CHELATED IRON - Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, and magnesium (together with iron) is the center molecule in the process we know as chlorophyll production. By making the magnesium and iron available to the tree, you're assuring yourself of green needles. The CHLORINE BLEACH? That stops the mold from forming when the sugar and water are combined.

Since mine will be a live Norfolk pine, I didn't pay much attention. alcohol will be easily absorbed I think. If anyone tries it let us know.
