Beginning next week, your cell phone number will be available to telemarketers. Following are the places where you can register to get your number blocked:

http://www.donotcall.gov (National Do Not Call site)

888-382-1222 (call must be made from the cell phone you want blocked)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Yeah, easy for me, too. Last thing I need is Telemarketers using up my minutes... not to mention annoying the poop outa me!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

great info and thanks!

Allen Park, MI(Zone 6a)

Your cell number won't me made available to telemarketers unless you give permission.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I sure hope so! Calling me on my cell phone to solicit would not only be an invasion of my privacy but also an invasion of my pocketbook.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Dangerous too depending on where you are when you answer it!

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Thanks Darius. My cell phone is my only phone now, and I have not had one single telemarketing phone call on it. I'm so happy to be able to get registered on the No Call list. Thanks so much!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

It would really irk me to get sales and other unsolicited calls eating up my minutes. Thanks for the info, Darius and Cheryl. At least most wireless carriers display caller ID on customers' phones so some discretion can be used. Still, many telemarketers come up as "no caller ID" on our land line and probably will on cellphones, too.

I have my old house phone set up on "Remote Call Forward" (for a monthly fee of course) to my cell phone. They wouldn't let me keep the number when I moved 4 miles down the road.

My new home phone is used for DSL, my fax and outgoing local calls. Incoming calls get the annoying fax tone.

I ramble on......my point is, my cell phone has caller ID on it. I never answer those "number not available" calls nor any calls I don't recognize the number for. If it's important they will leave a message and I will return the call.

In addition, my cell phone has this neat little quirk to it. I have the ringer set to Mozart and when a number not available call comes in, the phone does the regular ring instead of the melody. Saves me having to climb down off that ladder and run for the phone.

Anyway, again, Thanks for the tip Darius.

Afterthought: I have noticed some of the telemarketing companies are displaying 800 numbers now to trick you into answering. Also, many of the Fireman and Policeman associations leave their numbers visible. Although I do my share of giving, even the charitable groups sell their lists. You have to stop somewhere.

Exactly! The assignable ring tones are a really handy thing!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I'm not sure my phone has that feature... but then the booklet has such a tiny type size I cannot read it.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Darius,

I didn't read it either, Lord who has time to read the manuals on every gadget we depend on in our lives. I just found out when I happened to question the ring tone. But it is really a cool idea.

Shucks, I'd have read it if I could! I'd like to know how to program it!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

What model phone do you have? I know T-Mobile has Flash tutorials on their website, showing how to use features of various phones. Maybe your carrier does, too, or you could just look at T-Mobile's site?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

It's a new Motorola V60s phone, GSP.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

You can go to http://commerce.motorola.com/consumer/QWhtml/manual.html and look at the manual for the V60i (GSM) - that should be the same. At least you can enlarge the text that way. I don't think T-Mobile has the tutorials available unless you're a customer. Your own wireless carrier might have info on their site, though.

Kimberley,

You are amaazzzing!!!!

Thanks, GW... and cheaper than a magnifying glass, LOL.

They've already been calling some cell phones - with the automatic number dialing many of those companies have. Enough to drive people crazy.

My DH has been getting CONSTANT phone calls (not a solictor, I don't think) for someone named Audra. The phone call is coming from Maryland. Unfortunately, it is an automated message that asks you to call a certain number and then use a certain reference number. It says it so fast we never can find a pen in time to write it all down, thus the phone calls keep repeating, over and over and over and over again.

DH has had this cell number for over 3 years. Not sure why this suddenly started happening but it is starting to agitate him.

Sometimes in cases like that, it's the result of a typo in a company's database.

Aaargh, last night I got a call from a telemarketer and the man said, "Hello, is Lisa there?". When I said he'd gotten a wrong number, he said, "Oh, then may I speak to the lady of the house?". Sheesh.

We keep getting calls from a number that comes up as "Dove Foundation", too. Last time I answered, I told the caller I wanted to be added to their Do Not Call list and that I've received numerous calls since asking. I said I have the company's name and number on my caller ID. The man sounded alarmed and promised to take care of it. Right.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Karrie, cant you block that number?
One of the good things about living in turkey is that they havent been clued in on the phone solicitor mania. It is truly very nice, I remember we would get anywhere from 5 to 15 calls a nite, in the middle of dinner usually, and very irritating. Now we get none. none at all....it's great!

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

I get a deal from the company I retired from, cell phone service for about $10 a month, and I use it generally for a quick outgoing call. Only my family has the number , and it's turned off most of the time, so they can call me until the cows come home and nobody will pick up, and I don't activate the voice mail feature so they are out of luck. If I get a call, it will give me a message that a call has come in and show the number but I don't get charged for that.

Favorite things to do to telemarketers: Pretend I'm deaf and ask them to talk louder, put the phone down and walk away, until it does that beeping thing. Tell them I have something to sell them if they have a minute to listen, then describe something very very bizarre or boring in great detail. Tell them the party they are calling is deceased. Speak in broken English and tell them I'm the maid and the householders are on an extended tour out of the country. We don't get many calls...this seems to have removed us from quite a few lists.
