I have to share this story......Last week, we had all the grandchildren as school was out, Moms had to work, babysitters went out of town, etc. About the 3rd day, everytime I would go from the dining room to the living room I could smell something. Wasn't sure what it was, although my first thought was a diaper (misplaced, yuck)...or some food brought into the living room and tucked somewhere, etc. Well, DH and I tore apart everything, flipped the couches and vacuumed them, dusted, mopped, etc.....I could still smell the smell. [no, did not find diapers or hidden food, Thank God]. For two more days, I'm going crazy, pulling everything out in both rooms, cleaning, etc. still this smell. Finally, I said to my DH "I'm going to start pulling paneling down and tearing down ceilings to get to this smell. It smells like dead fish!!!" He still doesn't say anything. I walk around the table and I have a two big plants by my picture window in the dining room. I said, "Oh, my goodness Ralph it smells like my peace lily died! This is the smell, it smells like dead fish!!!" He starts laughing as he's heading for the door, because he remembers that a few days earlier he had fertilized my plants with Neptune's Harvest, which happens to be a fish emulsifier that we put on the gardens.
The moral of my story? If something smells fishy, it probably is and before you tear down walls or drive yourself crazy, ask your DH what HE did!!!
:) Kathy
What's that smell?
Aaaaargh! I've smelled fish emulsifier before and decided I'd not use it inside! ROTF!
That's funny, Kathy. Aren't you glad you didn't get to the panelling before you found it? LOL.
I do use fish emulsion sometimes inside in a VERY diluted solution but I have almost no sense of smell (anosmia).
LOL Kathy sounds like you got some good cleaning done though before ya found it.
hahaha!!! My DH constantly leaves wet towels wadded up in the laundry room - and of course they stink.. Before I went on a several day trip I smelled one that was prETty bad but left it anyway in the hopes he would 'learn' something from it.
Mean? Maybe. Did he learn from the experience? Of course not.. LOL
Kathy I am with you on the asking of the spousal unit first!!! :)
Oh boy, do I feel for you!
We call it fish poop soup. LOL
I have only used it inside a couple of times. Now I remember why. :)
But it is the greatest stuff on the fields. We buy it in 5 gallon buckets...and use about 5 of them, at least, during the season. Fish poop soup, LOL....I like that...
I feel confident that if I had known he was going to put that on, I would have chased him out of the house, ha, ha...
Shoe would love it!! He preaches to use Fish Poop Soup. Jo
I keep coming back to read this, one more time!! LOL
Judy
Could be why Shoe's hair grows so long....LOL...I bet Shoe would love it, it is really good stuff. I haven't noticed that it was good for my two plants, but the smell is gone and would recommend to anyone that is going to put it on the houseplants, that they do it outside and leave them out for a few days...maybe a week, LOL
Kathy if I did that there would be an instant dog attack. I have to be really selective what smells I treat them to. Bone meal and blood meal even well dug in will bring out the worst in my normal garden friendly Goldens.Ernie
lol- that is funny...
Judy, I just noticed you there. :) I keep coming to back to read it one more time, as well. Makes me want to get the broom after DH...LOL
How are you? Haven't talked to you in a bit. We've been so busy. Take care of yourself.
Kathy
Once I tried deep-frying some cod, that had been beer battered. The house reeked for days - just awful. I made a pot-pourri over the stove with whole cloves in it, then walked it through the entire house - worked well.
ANY fish cooked to more than 155ºF will stink... the hotter, the more stink, because the fish oils begin to break down above 160ºF.
That's sure good to know! My winter coat was hanging by the back door the day we cooked our turkey, and it still smells like food. Not-so-good now, LOL.
We haven't had a problem with cooking Halibut and Salmon indoors - just cod. We only cook that outside now.
