We had terribly high winds last night with an approaching cold front. Even when Ivan came though, we didn't have this kind of damage. Of course, Ivan was down to about 70 m.p.h when it hit here.
This swing was bolted down because it had blown off the whole deck and down into the yard before. The winds were so high last night that it literally broke the metal in the leg. It's sitting on top of our pond cover.
Lines are from damaged camera, no not the winds, but from dropping it on the ceramic tile bathroom floor at Taco Bell.
It took flight!
woodspirit, if you post this over in 'weather' we'll be all over this unusual wind and storminess that hit your area. Sorry 'bout your camera, at least you still get pics. (
IS THESE SIGNS OR AM I PARANOID ?
TIME for prayer or tin foil hats .weather is so weird this year .
I think we may see continued severe weather as long as we do nothing to protect the enviroment. I remember when everyone got on the wagon about the enviroment decades ago. We began to buy smaller cars, have smaller families, recycle and just not buy so many disposable things. How we have gotten lulled into thinking there is nothing to this and relaxed our concerns is amazing to me because now we can see the results.
It's so hard to understand why everyone is buying those huge gas-guzzling SUVs. I have never understood why enviromental care has become political either. We all need fresh air and clean water. And we all need to conserve fossil fuels. I for one, would be glad to take my pop bottles back to the store and get my deposit refunded......
I agree, Betty. I recycle everything I can, but so few people do. Soda bottles come from fossil fuels. HOW can they be cheaper than re-useable glass bottles?
Betty, one word explains it all: corporations.
I just bought a new car because my old car gave up the ghost. I traded a 16 year old honda civic for a new honda civic, and I plan to drive it for the next 16 years! Great cars! I think some of the little things we can each do would add up to a lot of difference in our world. I always turn the water in the sink off while I am brushing my teeth. We put on a sweater and keep the furnace lower instead of turning it up and wearing shorts (which is what hubby used to do!) Anybody have other examples? Meanwhile, I am preparing tinfoil hats for the whole family. . .
Hondas have the best rating for reliability that Consumer's Reports gives out. Everyone would do themselves a huge favor if they bought that magazine and learned about reliabilty, features, and costs of comparative items.
I recently searched olive oils. There were some excellent but expensive ones. However, Goya was much cheaper, rated very good and was called a "best buy."
pins, corporations still have employees and those employees, all the way up to the CEOs have families. How can they not care about their health and well-being? I have seen a huge increase in asthma in kids during my lifetime. So I just don't get it. Right now the EPA is almost powerless.
At the risk of starting a hailstorm here, I'll give you one link. You will be amazed at what you'll find just by googling "environment corporations." Yes, corporations do have families, but the bottom line is always (okay, the vast majority of the time) money. :-(

I know you're right of course, but I just don't get how they can be so short-sighted. Thanks for the link
Seems like we've been recycling forever, even before it became popular in the decade of gas shortages. I'm amazed at the amount of reusable stuff I see going into landfills, things that won't ever break down or decay. We even put the paper shredder scraps into the compost, and take our old newspapers to the pet store where they use it to line cages, etc. It isn't even any additional work, and it's beyond me why people view it as such a chore. If you are discarding something, why is it any harder to put it in a separate container rather than dump it all in one bin? Why is everything packaged in multiple layers of paper, plastic, and staples? We only have a couple of hardware stores in our area which is near a large city, that sells nuts, bolts, screws etc. from a bin, where you can buy only what you need rather than a bubble package using paper and plastic. We even use our plastic grocery bags for wastebasket liners..(which may be more due to my inherent frugality than concern for the environment....!) Usable items go to freecycle so they don't end up in the trash. I agree, clean air and water should not be a political issue, but it seems that it has become so. Sometimes I am glad I won't be around twenty years from now when all this comes home to roost.
meezers, it ALWAYS astonishes me to see how many people are too darn lazy to recycle... and most of them have kids/grandkids that they will be leaving this mess to...
We do not have garbage pickup in my county, and the landfill charges 50¢ per small white garbage bag and $1 for the big greeen ones to dump them. Recycling into the bins is free so it sure cuts down my fees at the landfill.
What I don't have yet at my new place is a compost bin. I need to make a new one soon, just haven't had the energy.
