I'd say I'm intolerant of intolerance, but that would be a self-contradictory statement...hee hee
not to mention a tad hypocritical of course. :-)
All good points Lynn, thanks for raising them.
Canadian Roundup part 3 /29 Nov/2004

any big political issues that are red flags for anyone that we might skirt or be careful of? (grammar police on that preposition there) Ok Lynn, if you are a fan of Ralph's, we'll just have to sit at a different table...;-)
can't imagine there are gardening topics that could get us going - unless its the chemical vs organic division? Have you read the Garden Foes forum lately...wowee!!
seems that we are a pretty mellow bunch - how Canadian of us - of course!
Kooger, that reminds me of when I lived in UK. Had to go and register at local police station every year as an 'alien'. There were a whole bunch of us from school who had to go and register every year. So you have to register every year asan 'allowable' alien in the US?
I finally gave up and got a British passport. Found I had to have just too many visas to go very far with current passport.
Now of course, have a million @#$% every time I go into US from Canada. US immigration/customs do not like my EU passport, even with Cdn citizenship card. Last time made the mistake of showing both passports. Bad move. Apparently it is against the law to have 2 passports in the USA. From now on have decided I'll go across the border by car and fly from Fargo or somewhere.
Inanda aka Ginny
When I first moved to the US, I came on a student visa. Met DH, got married, moved here. Got my Alien Registration card, took a year to get it all done. Had to go to Fort Dodge for physical, had to go to Omaha for interview. Then I had to register every year at the post office. They quit that some time in the early 80s and I didn't have to do anything for quite a few years. Then they decided everyone had to get a new ID card with fingerprints and new photo. And it has an expiration date. Mine expired last year in Dec. Because of 9-11, they said it takes up to 1.5 years to get a new card, so they just put this strip on the back of the card. Mine is now good til the end of Dec. 04. That means no travel out of US until this is resolved. Since they denied my application Dec. 2, now I have to pay to refile or pay to reopen existing file. grrrrrrrrrr! VERY frustrating!!
Yes, they do take a very dim view of folks with 2 passports!! or 2 driver's licenses!
LOL, Donna! I was avoiding them, but your way is more fun ;-)
Boy, isn't it interesting how a few pieces of paper and bits of ink can "define" us in the eyes of the state. Ginny, I wonder how long it'll be before they're asking for passports to cross the border? I never thought it would happen, but now it seems like anything's possible.
My mom & her DH go to Bottineau ND for an afternoon every now & then - there's a place there that serves good ice cream cones :-) It would sure change local cross-border traffic if they started asking for passports...think of the Detroit-Windsor area.
Has anyone ever been to the International Peace Garden at the Manitoba-North Dakota border? It's beautiful, any time of year. Lots of wildlife. Here's the link: http://www.peacegarden.com/
spklatt-Shannon,
Excellent site, and to what it stands for.
Ingrid
Thanks, Ingrid! I've just added this garden to the public gardens forum as well - I'd forgotten about it til now.
I've visited the Peace Garden several times, as my mom lives 1/2-hr drive away. The concept seems particularly a propos now, doesn't it....
“May Peace Prevail”
Best regards, Ingrid
Hi Ginny, nice to hear from you again. :) Kooger and Inanda, I had no idea there was so much "red tape" involved in being an alien. (Is that the same as landed immigrant?) Anyway, I don't care for either term, actually. But it would explain after 10 years or so of living in California, my DS and BIL and their kids decided to become US citizens. Much of my family was disappointed, whereas I pointed out what I have believed for a long time, "if you want to live in a country, then be a citizen of that country". I worked with too many people from the UK who talked incessantly of Jolly Ole' for so long, that I became bitter, hence my thought above. But no wonder my sister and her family decided to become US citizens...wowee, that's a lot of diddling about, isn't it? It would drive me crazy. My sister has been in San diego for 25 years now and only comes back if she "has" to, so it was definitely the right move for her. I have a step son who lives in Texas (married an Amercian girl), and no doubt if he has to go through that kinda rigamorol, he'll probaby turn "Murrican" on us too. (better not tell my DH!)
okay, won't tell the DH. My DH has asked a few times for me to switch but it is hard. Only one sis is in WI and the other 7 sibs are in Canada. Two of them married US gals and 2 married Dutch citizens, originally. All but one have Cdn. cit. now. I think if something happened to DH, I would probably still want to go back to Canada.
Shannon, what a gorgeous place that International Peace garden is! I wished I'd have known about it when I lived in Portage, I would have certainly gone. The message it carries is so appropriate for our times now, isn't it? As Ingrid said, "May Peace Prevail."
My mom & her DH just love it; they go regularly. It's really quite something, isn't it... all North American political leaders should be required to go! :-)
kooger, hope you can make it.
I like to think I'm pretty tolerant, and easy goign, so I don't think much if anything would be a problem for me. I may not agree with others opinions, but that's OK, I"m not about argue about things, I hate confrontations. I personally don't drink, but my partner likes her wine, and if you want to drink, enjoy.

We are all different in our thinking and reasoning, aren't we, Laura. In some cases it's family over location to live, sometimes it's DH over where to live. In my sister's case, after 25 years, her 3 children are now all married and settled with children of their own, all born in the US. Although my Mom and brother and I are still here, she made the choice to committ to her life there. When DH and I made the decision to leave most of our family in Alberta, including grand children, many people commented that they could never do the same thing. In our case we chose our dream, over family.(Sometimes, I think Peace of Mind, whew!. But each couple/person has to make the desision that is comfortable for them. As long as you are happy, that's what counts.
I can see your thinking! I would take a z6 over a z2 or z3 any day. I've finding the cold tolerance gets less as I get older. I was z5 in ON and am z4 here and boy, I'm really beginning to HATE that constant prairie wind. :)
As for the issues stated above, I am opinionated, like everyone else, lol, but unless asked, have no problem keeping it to myself. Now if you wanna have a debate.... just kidding, we'll debate flowers! or else agree to disagree! it'd be a boring world if we all thought alike!!!!!!!
Amen! Everything that Laura said, Lynn. Me too!
I totally agree with what you are saying about "the older we get". I was born in the big TO, but was basically raised in Edmonton. Can't remember the cold and snow ever being a problem until I reached middle age, 40 something. Then, I started feeling the cold, the wind. Started resenting cold, gray, rainy days in July. Just going back to my sister for a minute. (I wonder if her ears are burning? LOL) When she and her "rich" husband moved to San Diego 25 years ago, she always said, it wasn't the cold winters that drove them to want to move to California...(although she refuses to ever come back in the winter) it was the lousy summers. They owned a cottage at one of the central Alberta lakes. One year they had the month of July for their holidays. You guessed it! It rained for the entire month. The next summer they were in San Diego. The rest, as they say, is history!
Ok ladies, If it's still a go with all of you, I will put in an order for 15 tote bags at $11.00 each. !4 of you have confirmed that you want one.
I will be putting this on my Visa. Would it be much of an imposition to ask that you send me your $11.00 as you are able. I have this situation called a "spouse", that is grumbling about an extra $165.00 expense.
Coments?
No problem for me, Let me check to see if I still have your snail mail...
Yup I do, so will send it either today or tomorrow.

Thank you, OldFlowerGirl, I will also get the money off to you if you e-mail your address to me.
Heather
Hello again. Sorry, I've been away with DH all day. Lots of snow at the top of Paulsen Summit. 4-5 feet in places. Roads were dry this morning. Coming back, it started raining just as we were reaching the mountain summit, hit some black ice, did a little slip slid'n for a few seconds. Scared the livin' daylights out of me. DH was calm. I don't know how he does it!!!
Anyway, no rush with those cheques. Anytime it's convenient. I realize it's a busy time of year. My addy is:

Thank you for posting it Donna....I'll have mine in the mail in two weeks (next paycheque). ;)
I was wondering that too Donna. I'll send you a cheque tomorrow.
Oh, you know, I hadn't figured any of that out. I was thinking that I could bring them with me to the RU if you like other than Christine who I'll mail out to as she isn't attending (yet!) If you want to have yours mailed out beforehand, I'll have to figure that out. All I know is the cost is $11.00 per bag plus GST which comes to $176.55 (15 x 11.00 plus $11.55 GST).

I haven't been around much lately. Have you included me for one of thye totes Donna ?? Because I do want one, if pos.
Inanda aka Ginny
Okay Donna, that's $11.77 for each tote. There's no way you should be paying the GST.
OldFlowerGirl
Donna, you have mail..
Be Blessed, Ingrid
OK, Jeanne. The total for each tote is $11.00 +GST. Total = $11.77
No problem Pam, at your convenience is fine with me. :)
No problem Ginny, you will be the #15 Tote.
Anybody else before I submit payment to Love A Tree Gift Bags?
OK, Christine, I'll get yours out to you as soon as I get them. :D
I e-mailed Dave to make sure we could use the Club logo on the totes and if we could, whether he could provide a High Definition Image of said Logo. Christine from Love A Tree Gift Bags contacted me to say that the one I sent her (just copied the image off the website) was too blurry to make a transfer from. Haven't heard from him yet. I'll advise all of you if there are any problems. Christine is supposed to provide a final draft of what the tote will look like before production. So I'll post that as well, OK?
Have a good one.
Donna, would you like a cheque now? or ????????????????????? Elaine
Whenever it's convenient for you, Elaine. :D
Sounds good Donna. I really appreciate all the work you've done regarding the totes. It will be a nice, practical keepsake that will be around a lot longer than a T-shirt (as much as I like T-shirts mind you). I don't need mine mailed to me as I'm pretty sure now that I'll be picking it up myself. I'll send my cheque off today.
oops, slipped my mind. I forgot about this....
Toomuch going on I guess. Thanks for the reminder.
Linda
don't worry...be happy!!!
I just realized that when Ginny wrote to say she wanted a tote on the13th, she actually already had expressed interest so I counted her earlier. So there is one extra tote for anyone who wants it now or later. FYI
