you guys are so knowledgeable, could you please help me id this plant? A man at a garage sale gave me a cutting. It was growing up the side of his house. I mean growing into the morter of the bricks. He said he whacked it down every winter when it was killed back. It has huge stalks. I just laid them in some potting soil and they have rooted.
Philodendron Monstera deliciosa (I think)
ruthm, see my post on your other thread in the Identification forum.
WOW- 99.00 for that? I love them and we sell them for ALOT less but admit they are a pain to ship. Maybe the extra money is handling fees!
I have one in my livingroom and it's quite dark, doing great. They don't like a lot of sunlight and will fade but won't die. The fruit it produces is really yummy tastes like banana and pineapple but you must wait until it's fully ripe to eat or the tannins will make you sick. I'm not sure if it fruits inside... I don't know why it wouldn't.
In fact someone from here came and got one from us yesterday. Let me see if I can find a picture of one with the fruit on it.
Tamara
Did anyone notice the Philodendron Monstera Borsigiana albo variegata that was sold on ebay the other day? It went for $189.00. I am now talking nicley to mine a few times a day! I will kill myslef if it dies on me.
For some reason I can't get the link to post. Sorry

These go for crazy prices on eBay. I've sold a couple and both went for over $100. If I operated an actual store (be it physical or internet), I'd never sell them for that much, but things one eBay are only worth what someone will pay (long as the item isn't misrepresented)!
You really shouldn't have problems, kell. These really aren't tempermental plants and are quite forgiving. I didn't even bring mine in at all this winter (except a few days at Christmas when we had that crazy snowy cold blast - my 'regular' Monstera del. stayed outside just fine), and aside from a little frost burn on some leaves, it's prefectly fine and putting out new growth. Being as you are in zone 9b, this should be an easy one for you - no worries!
I've done a little research on the "albo variegata" variety and from what I've read, they are a little more picky about their surroundings in that they require higher humidity. I have two Monstera delicosia plants and they do just fine without misting, even during our (pacific nw) hot, very dry summers. Has anyone else heard about this?
When I lived in Miami, the Monstera deliciosa that lived in my yard were almost an invasive plant! If they have no place to climb they just fall down and continue to get bigger and bigger. The one planted by the Poinciana tree climbed and the only way to control it was with a Machete! It bore an amazing amount of fruit which my DH ate for his Arthritis. He would harvest it, keep it on a window sill and eat the kernals as they ripened. Ripe or not, it always made my tongue sore just as fresh pineapple does.
Reading this thread made me miss my "monsters" and I'm going to Home Depot today and see if they still have them. Who knows, I might even find a M. deliciosa borsigiana!! I love it!

I wonder f they have the variegated ones available to them. You might get a good buy!
She's lovely. I also peeped through the window onto your "wrapped porch". Looks lovely too.

PS I can relate to "diet grouchy": LOL
Ditto everything Patti said. I'm really ogling that Horsehead Phil! Can't believ mine keeled over and died! Boo-hoo!
What a gorgeous feel your home has to it - very warm and alive!
So here I am thinking he could have pulled off the dead leaf and dusted in front of the pot before he took the picture..... lol lol lol
Sequee, BigDaddy read your posting and told me I should send you another Horserhead. I told him I didn't have any more rooted, to which he responded he bet he could find some... lol lol You have the man eating our of your hand.
When it gets warm up there let me know and I'll ship you out one.
Judy
Oh, I don't know, Judy! I couldn't bear to kill another one! I'm feeling a little defeated right now - killed your Horsehead, JRush's split leaf - the poor little brug baby turning to mush - and now the aphids and white flies! Maybe I'll just stick to Cactus, Wandering Jew and Veggies!
Hee's my sunroom tomatoes...
The tomatoes look healthy!!!
Sequee, things just happen, please don't get discouraged, this is truly just a disgusting insect infestation you're going through. I have you some stuff rooting remember and 2 of them just happen to be Horseheads, but we'll switch those out for one that has been growing in soil for 6 months or so. In my opinion Brugs are just TROUBLE and unless I have some fantastic blooms I'm not going to be having any inside the house next winter and I surely don't want them on the porches with my other plants.
Can you move your Brugs and any other plant with insects to the basement and treat them there? At least that way maybe the insects wouldn't spread while you're trying to kill them. Gosh I've had plants all my life, and this is the first time I've had spider mites, that's Brugs for you!!! I got some African Violets one time that had mealy bugs which spread to my other AVs and I just tossed all of the ones that had bugs. If it gets too bad with these Brugs that is what I'll do.
We'll get you fixed back up with plants so don't worry.
Judy
OMG - she's beautiful!!!
Thanks, the mother plant is not bad looking either :~) The problems I have with this plant are #1, I try to overwater it on occasion and #2 I let it get too much sun earlier in the year and it fried some of the white parts of the leaves.
I am not sure what to do about fertilizer. I have used some slow release (Osmocote 18-6-12) on it, but it doesn't seem to want to grow much. Any ideas? Maybe change the soil? It's been in that soil for less than a year.
I hope Judy or one of the other pros would come along with some advice. Best not to listen to me - I'm a murderer! Seems like there are just some things that it's best not to trust me with...
