Gorgeous Judy!!

That is so neat. I love the shape of the leaves.

I tried trading off some young pups for other large leaf phils earlier in the month but wasn't successful. There are 2 maybes still pending but now the weather has turned off so COLD!!!

Judy

Judy, I think you're right about its name. I have one too, and it grows like a fiend.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I have 2 more good sized plants and 3 pups/rooted cutting which are really big!! Plus I have 3 more giant pots of another more common kind. Oh I forgot I have to bring them in, they are in the yard around the goldfish tank/small pond!!!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

That is beautiful! So is your hardwood!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Badseed, thanks so much. The floors are a long story. 92 year old owner of a sawmill who only sold to people he liked, told BigDaddy99, my DH that he had something special for our living room floors, cherry wood. DH laid the flooring and finished it himself. We are very proud of the floors and have fond memories of the old man who made them special.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Actually, it's just Monstera deliciosa. Philodendron and Monstera are two different species. M. deliciosa was originally named Philo. pertusum but at some point in the past transferred and renamed M. deliciosa. Many people still get confused by the name (and as often as they seem to change, it's easy to see why!!).

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Carter, I surely wish you would take a look at the PDB, it truly confuses me!!!

Kingston, GA(Zone 7b)

Judy, I want to get a start of this plant of yours since it is so different from the one I have. Let me look around to see if I can find some plants to trade you for it. What are your plant interests into now? I can't help you much on the brugs but maybe I might have something else you may like. Please contact me. Thanks, Monica :)

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

This is the one I grow. It's the variegated form of monstera. Albo variegata I believe. :-)

Judy, yes, I agree. That's definitely a "Monstera delicosa". How old is your plant? I have two that stand about 5 feet tall and love the foliage. Yours looks like a very happy camper! I counted the splits in the leaves--8 on each side with so many little ones. Wow. That's the max I've ever had on any leaves on my plants. Each of mine has many "pups", but I'm too afraid to take them away from the momma plant so they just get staked and I enjoy their beauty.

Eclipse, I didn't know there even existed a "variegated" form of monstera. Looks so beautiful!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, Kyle. That one is beautiful.

Kingston, GA(Zone 7b)

Eclipse---that is a beauty you have there! :) Where did you ever find that plant? I would love to find one too. They don't sell monsteras here in my backwoods town.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Here's the newest leaf on my M. delciosa. Measurements are 24"x29". Mine is a young plant (actually 4 several year old seedlings). This one just attached itself to the wall this spring which is when the leaf size really started increasing.

And this is my variegated M. deliciosa borsigiana. A little smaller leaves at maturity.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

How long does it take for these guys to mature? That's an absolutely HUGE leaf! Wow!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Eclipse & Carter - Now ya'll don't make me beg... come Spring I would love to have a cutting of the verigated.

I rescued mine about 18 months ago. It wasn't sold at an estate sale so the person who bought the "sale left overs" got it. They had been set up for two days next to a flea market and no one had shown any interest, because it was such a pitiful root bound thing with only two leaves. I ended up trading a couple of used book for it. Once home, we had to use a saw to cut off the old plastic pot so it could be repotted.

Kingston, GA(Zone 7b)

I am dropping my pride for a small start of those beauties--heeheehee--I'm down on my knees a beggin'!! Please, please, pretty please. LOL I would cherish one of those. :)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Bumkin, I'll send you a cutting of mine, but do you think we should wait for spring or take the chance NOW!!!

Ya'll Bumkin is a great trader and quick with postage if that is what you want.

Judy

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Okay, I have sat here all happy and nice loving my two plants from two DG friends. Then here comes Kyle causing plant lust but hey, with him I am used to it. But NOOOOOOOOOO, that wasn't enough. Up jumps Carter with another. You kids are really, really bad!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Sorry, had to wipe away the slobber and come back. :)

Judy, you and bigdaddy did great! That floor is stunning. We have the original hardware in our home, built the same year I was. LOL Most of the original finish is gone now. We have gone back and forth between refinishing and just covering it up. In 14 years, we have had carpet twice and them bare twice. I love the feel of carpet but the look of the wood. Sigh. One of these days, it will look really great, then we can sell and get the biggest darn house we can find!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Badseen & Bumkin - please notice this plant is a giant!!! One side of the double doors which are behind my plant are 36" wide, which will probably make the total plant 6 feet wide. It was an old plant with massive roots, but it did some kind of growing in 18 months!!!

Badseed what two plants do you have?

I think we should have a Philodendron Co-op but we would have to be patient and wait until Spring, wouldn't we??? (lol lol)

Kingston, GA(Zone 7b)

Thank you Judy for the compliment. You are sweet and a great trader too. :)

I think we both are drooling over those variegated monstera pics. Aren't they beautiful?? I would die to have one of those. I can send postage, trade plants, or even do a little dance jig for them if that would talk Eclipse or Carter into sharing a small start with us. lol

I would love to have one of your solid green ones too. We can trade whenever you think it would be best for the plant and yourself. I am always overjoyed at the thought of adding new additions to my gardens and the gh keeps them happy.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

The variegated M. deliciosa borsigiana is absolutely beautiful. Where could I find such a plant?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gorgeous variegated plants. I'd love to have one also, but geez....where do I fit everything in? Some day!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Thanks, all! They're not necessarily rare, but they aren't exactly common, either. As for the variegated ones, the only place I can tell you to find them is eBay - which is where I got mine. Be forewarned - they aren't cheap!

And sorry, guys, I am always happy to trade plants, but my regular monstera isn't big enough to really cut on and I'm letting the variegated one recover and grow - it's not all that large either, and I took a few larger cuttings from it this summer. I'll have them available again, just not until next year, late spring or early summer.

Kingston, GA(Zone 7b)

I understand Carter about letting it recover and grow. I was hoping I might could get a start and it doesn't hurt to ask. Maybe in late spring/early summer I can contact you again to see if we might can trade. I will keep my eyes open for them now since I seen what a beauty it is. Thank you much for showing your pic to us. :)

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

We will see how big mine is by spring..takes a long time to grow much..as do all variegated plants! :-)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks for the tip. I will look on ebay. I have a heavily variegated
Lemon tree and just love the foliage. Even the Lemons themselves come out variegated and have a pinkish interior (very tart).

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Jester let me know if you find one of those varigated beauties and we can add that to our summer swap!

You guys should all be very proud - they are truly a gorgeous!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Judy, I have two of the monstera and they are beautiful plants.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Seeing the variegated ones on here the other day reminded me of my search last year for one. I had seen a huge one in a window of a restaurant in San Francisco. After seeing them on here I did a google search and what incredible luck, I found a nice man who shared who lives fairly close to me!

And what is so cool, the stems are variegated also!

Thumbnail by Kell
Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Nice, kell. Your's looks to be the same as mine, variegated Monstera deliciosa borsigiana. I was told the way to tell the difference between Monstera deliciosa and Monstera deliciosa borsigiana is that M.d. will have little to no stem between leaf nodes, while M.d.b. will have a few inches or more. Also, M.d. will have a crinkle on the petiole (leaf stem) where it joins the leaf (almost like a wrinkle from bending). M.d.b. doesn't have that.

(edited to correct my spelling...)

Continuing the saga of "Phylis Monster" (the Monstera deliciosa formerly known as Philodendron)...
Phylis was standing quietly in the dining room early this morning and when I passed by, she whispered, "I'm cold. Would you move me away from the front door, please?"
She's very polite and always says, "Please".
In the past month, she has grown about a foot taller and maybe two feet wider! It's not that she's just gaining weight, she is one of these mothers that is continuously pregnant... She has more little ones every week!
So, I moved her away from the front door and she smiled and went back to sleep... she sleeps a lot during the day!
Judy has done wonders with this little lady! She started with a root bound, scraggly looking, unnamed, wild thing that was about to kick the bucket (flower pot) and made it into a grand dame with a lacy green gown that waltzes around the floor when we're not looking...

Now doesn't he have a way with words!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

LOL! BigDaddy, you are good!! Beautiful plants, all of you.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I've noticed that most of the delicosas on this thread aren't staked. I let mine grow unstaked for the first year and when I had to move, one of the main branches broke off. Since then, I've staked all stalks on both of my plants and they seem to be doing better. I also live in a slightly colder zone (8b) so I couldn't let them touch the window panes and I didn't have enough space for them to continue to sprawl out as they liked. I'll have to post a pic of my 2-yr old monstera I have upstairs one of these days. For only getting northern light, she's been doing great. How much sunlight do these beauties prefer?
