Last Friday DW and I were sitting in our local eatery and the service was a bit slow. After a while DW says "looks like they are short handed today", to which I responded " ir's better than being short legged" and the lady that I didn't even know sitting at the next table blew a large quantity of ice tea out her nose, then gave me a dirty look. Is it my fault she was evesdropping on a private conversation?
Resturant advice.
Not your fault in the least! She's lucky that it wasn't hot coffee, that would hurt!
Thanks. I feel better now.

Trois, it serves her right for eavesdropping. We all say things in jest to our spouses that we wouldn't say in other company. She shouldn't have been listening...and if she was, too bad for her if she didn't like the content of the conversation!
-Julie
I just don't understand her response at all. It seems like I can almost, but then the reaction seems confused.
I'da been spurting out my nose, too - with laughter. You are quick-witted! It's amazing how people can take things and turn them around, isn't it? Makes you wonder what goes on in THEIR heads, no?
Perhaps she had short legs?!!!! I see nothing offensive about that comment - Listening to conversations not meant for oneself can offer all sorts of unintended insults/abuses/snides IF you are looking for them!
Aside from the frown, she looked perfectly normal. No short legs.
Apparently just short on a sense of humor!
Maybe she was embarressed because she had one and didn't like it. She did leave rather soon after the incident.
I should hope she left... it's one thing to eavesdropping but then to get caught by starting to laugh in the mist of drinking, have the tea spurting out her nose, and probably down the front of her outfit. Double embarrassment got caught and was "wet" to prove it. Too Much lol lol lol
That is likely an accurate description of what happened.
Thanks.
Maybe SHE was insulted because you didn't blow a drink back at her. LOL
lol lol lol
I think some of you are mean! lol
People who eavesdrop on other people's conversations should have a sense of humour. Something similar always happens to us because my DH is a comedy act in himself and can't be quiet about it ... lol. Don't think I've ever seen anyone spurting tea from listening in though, but we do get some strange looks from people ... get a life!!!
Happy Tuesday!!
Christine
II think I may embarrass DW sometimes but she still likes to eat out. I guess she is used to it.
The servers all smile when we come in but then they avoid us.
I have been known to get up and refill my coffee myself. If the manager notices I get much better service after that.
If I could just get something to refill in the first place.
I had breakfast at The Original Panty in downtown Los Angeles this morning. I barely sat down when the waiter from half-way across the room made motions asking if I wanted coffee. In a half-hour I was finished eating.
This place claims that it has not closed in 74 years and they claim to have never been without a customer. There are no latches on the front door. They even changed locations one time to make way for a freeway without missing a meal. Breakfast and lunch at the old location, dinner at the new.
Sounds like a great place.
"Servers smile, yet avoid us." Well ya must be regulars at a small town place. I worked at a Bristro for many years when younger and have done(overheard) wedding proposals to adultry,to Im dying, husband sleeping with the mailMAN,no joke. If ya wanna keep things private then ya dont need to be out in public! And yes there were many times I spit my tea out laughing.Just bet those folks were not from Texas as they would not have been affended.Hey,mabe just try doubling up on the tip and they will beg to please ya! Ill almost bet on it.
Actually, they are very nice. I don't know where they are from, but it is a small town in Texas here.
I already tip more than most.
Thanks, Trois. Today I added a new word to my scarce English vocabulary: eavesdropping. Never a day goes by without having learned something new at DG!
I don't understand the womans reaction...and the term 'eavesdropping' might be, too harsh...when you are in a cafe and are talking it is next to impossible not to overhear what is being said...I have joined a lot of conversations in my time..everywhere...lines at the bank, the store, in places to eat...and I only think it is eavesdropping when you listen and don't participate...am I wrong? or is it just me?
melvatoo, I completely agree with you. I talk to strangers with positive results all the time. I guess her participation was involuntary.
About the waitresses. Most have been there more than 15 years. We just moved here 6 years ago, so we are the outsiders. We still enjoy the place and they have good food.
When I was a little kid I used to embarrass my father by asking questions of strangers, but as my father said of me, " he has never met a stranger", which is still true.
Maybe she was embarassed that the tea made an exit out of her nose, and she couldn't think of what to say...I would have just laughed...I don't think I have ever met a stranger, either..it used to worry my Mother, my talking to people I didn't know...but no bad things have happened to me, yet.
Hope you have a wonderful Holiday, Trois! That goes for everyone here...anyone who is listening to us, LOL!
I plan to have a wonderful time. I hope everyone does.
trois
