DG Email Dilemma

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Dave, I've been pleased with the 'in-house' emailing feature. It has made it much easier for me to keep track of my trade correspondence. However, I've had an unsatisfactory plant/seed agreement with another DGer. I sent plants and seeds, but have never received the $9 postage. I have emailed twice inquiring, but get no response.

I feel I should post this on their memberpage as feedback, but want to be sure they have received my messages. When email used to go directly to their computer inbox, I knew they would receive it or be returned, but with the new system, I have no home email address for them, and I assume they will not receive the email unless they log on to Dave's Garden. (This is not a subscribed member, and this posting is not intended as an embarassment to them.) Other than sending a snail-mail letter with a confirmation of receipt option, I have no idea they have been informed that I have not received the money... that would rack my loss up to about $10!...LOL!

I guess what I want to know is whether our DG mail is entirely in-house, and if I can have DG forward mail to the member's home email address, if necessary. And, yes, I know, I should have asked for the money up front!

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

Coincidental for me that you should post that today. I was expecting a visit from a DGer today and yesterday we left it at she would wait to hear from me this morning to confirm. I did email her at 8 AM this morning to confirm and have not heard back from her nor did she arrive this afternoon as expected. I have no other way to contact her, so I've been wondering all day if some how she didn't get my email and is still waiting to hear from me.

Weezin, when you email a person through the system, indeed it stays in the system. However, if they don't come read it within 2 days, the system will send them a direct email (to their regular email address we have on file for them) and tell them they have mail. It even gives them a special link to click on which automatically logs them in.

So, rest assured that she HAS seen your email.

Dave

Thanks, Dave. That's what I needed to know! Pville, I hope this helps you, as well.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

Isn't there a preference that you can change your email address if you change ISP's? Maybe the address they have on file is no longer a current email for them. In that case it probably was sent but they will never get it.
Maybe you could post on their feedback that they should update their email address if necessary.
I know when I changed mine there was a few accounts I over looked.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Windy, all fine and good, but if I sent $9 in an envelope, I'd be asking whether it was received or not. If I owed that, I'd be contacting the receiving party to let them know of any changes. If DG has informed the party that there is email waiting, I believe they would have been informed if the party could not receive their email. I am being ignore, so I don't mind posting a negative comment. I can afford to lose my time and money, but I would like to spare someone else the same experience. Trading should be fun.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

Don't know about that. Sometimes I get a returned email saying undeliverable and sometimes I don't.
Some emails just go into the cyberspace trash can I suppose.
I am not commenting on what kind of problem is in the email, just stating that maybe their email is not current.

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

Well actually now I'm a little bit concerned that something else might have happened. I haven't seen her around the garden anywhere today. Hopefully she just got tied up with other things or maybe has a computer access problem today.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Who is 'she', Pville? As I stated before, this is a 'non-subscriber', so you wouldn't be seeing them around the garden. If it were a subscriber, I'd have sent Dave a personal email rather than air dirty laundry. I just thought it was a problem others might have had.

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

Understood.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Thanks, PV!

I'm the she! I am so sorry, Pville!

I am staying with my daughter and her family. I was waiting for the rain to let up before I left on the trip north and my daughter talked me into going with her and some of the kids for a picture taking trip that was suppose to last an hour. I should have known better....

We got back over 3 hours later with dinner waiting finished on the stove. (Stew started before we left.)

With a house full of kids one thing led to another with me leaving you in the lurch. I am so sorry.

Wish I had asked for your phone number last night.....

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

Donna,

GTSY! Not to worry. I was just a bit concerned about you, but not in any way inconvenienced. I'm just glad that everything is ok. I thought I had given you my number via email but no matter. Just contact me if you still want the pampas whenever it is convenient :-).

One thing about the member feedback option is that one can always go back and edit if an issue is resolved. I think it is important to be fair about our own part in any misunderstandings, but, at the least, inquiries need a reply.

If there is an emergency or money problems or a bout of depression or a computer crash... at some point, you should be contacted. I don't know many traders that wouldn't be relieved to know the reason they've been ignored and be willing to work with the other trader or recipient. The whole key is communication.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I certainly KNOW how understanding you are! Surely I'm one of the pokiest people on the Trade sites, but I do try to keep in communication!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Hey, Sequee, I don't recall you're being pokey, but then, as long as I'm hearing from someone, I'm not a bit concerned. I don't plant much of anything between October and January or February. Most of my planting is done from March on... indoors! I just like to hear from my traders once in awhile... especially if I've forgotten to send them something myself. It happens! I don't think many of us mind failure... it's the intent that bothers us.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

yeah - I'm afraid I got a couple of those. After a couple of reminders the "OMG - I can't believe I forgot you again" starts to wear a little thin!

For the most part everyone does great, though, and since joining DG, I can definitely say that I'm ahead in the game! lord knows I LOVE a good trade. Sometimes one marvels at what all is out there. It's going to be so much fun this year to be able to plant a bit of SO MANY things.

Just one question...IS IT SPRING YET???

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Not here, Sequee! I can't call it spring around here until mid-May...sob.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

The 4 inches of snow we got on friday night is still dusting the surfaces. It's a tad early for us...wonder what that means. i do love the first snow of the year, though. Here's a picture from my computer area in the sunroom.

Wow. If we get one or two snows like that a year, it's a good (cold) year ;o)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Terrry, snow is a wonderful mulch. It's full of nutrients. Our problem is getting it to 'stick'. Often it melts off mid-winter or early spring, leaving the plant confused.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

hehehhe...not meaning to go too far off-topic but I remember Weezin's snow and it calls to mind a time when Weezin and her hubby decided to...to...uh...well, this link sums it up best! ;>)

OMG - That is hysterical! I love it!

Back to the topic... I wasn't doing any trades recently but inadvertantly I ended up in the hospital for a few days. No way to email, no way to communicate if I did have trades going.

Happens I was out just a few days, but now I will always some space for someone to respond. I recall someone in the hurricanee zone that got slammed for not responding, when they were simply ou of power and then had a debilitating auto accident to boot.

I still think trades with just non-subscribers can be tricky.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

darius, this member had plenty of space. It's been over a month since the plants and seeds were received, and my first email inquiry was on November 2nd... the second one on the 14th. I think that is fair.

To update everyone, after my second email, stating I was intending to leave unfavorable feedback in order to protect other traders, I did receive a reply. I was told that he/she intended to send the money the day he/she said, but didn't. This person was working on the election, so got busy and forgot. There was no reason given for not answering my November 2nd email. I have been assured the money is in the mail now. I plan to allow a few days to receive it, and if it is not received by then, I'll post an unfavorable report.

You know, whether someone forgets or doesn't check their email it is still a bad trade. In the rare cases when tragedy strikes, the comment can be edited accordingly. The worst that can happen is that no one will trade with you while you are grieving or sifting through the ashes of your burnt house... in other words, would you care?

I personally think that the feedback is a good deal, since it is only seen if someone looks for it.. and you would only be looking for it if you plan to trade. There is an edit feature and an option to rebut, I believe.

Well stated, Weez...
