Does anyone know where I can find books on carving and painting ostrich and emu eggs?
I have seen a lot of books on egg decorating but they are for chicken, duck and other eggs that are not as thick as the ostrich or emu eggs.
Ostrich and Emu Egg Decorating Books
I don't know of any books but I know a lady who does it. I will ask her what she recommends. Her eggs are beautiful. Some of them are made into purses. She goes to shows and teaches classes too. She said she also uses another type of egg but I forgot what she called it. I will let you what she says. I don't know if she has an email but if she does I will see if she will let me give it to you. Good luck with your eggs.
Thank you MsMatti I really appreciate it. I have done egg carving before but not on any as thick and hard as ostrich and emu eggs.

What do you carve other eggs with? A Dremel? That would be my choice. Do you have a very good egg source, or just one or two you don't want to mess up? Because they are thicker, you just take a little longer.
This also makes them sturdier.
As for painting, drain and dry egg, Clean shell with vinegar as last step and paint with same paint used on other eggs.
If you have a camera take pictures, then publish a how to book.
I think a beautiful "Cameo" effect can be had if the under layers are lighter as I suspect.
You can do it.
My friend Wanda uses a dremel and also a little drill just like the dentists use. She has a box with a glass front, and inclosed area with exhaust fan. She said that the dust from the eggs can cause health problems.
There is an ostrich farm just outside of Pheonix call Rooster Cogburn Ostrich farm. I have bought several eggs from them. Just thought I would let you know if you needed a source for the eggs. I don't know if they have a website or not. Will have to check that out.

Sugar I just purchased one cleaned egg off Ebay so I don't have a source for them. As for painting I was wondering if I had to sand it first because of the shinny coating on the egg. Thanks for your confidence in me wish I felt that confident in myself. If they weren't so expensive and I had more to work with I wouldn't mind experimenting with them but since I only have one of each I tend to be a little weary. I used a exacto knife to carve my chicken and gourd eggs.
MsMatti I do have a dremel tool but would like to get a deal on a dentist drill, I was informed that you can get greater detail using the dentist tool.
Jan how much are their eggs?
