Family Tree Questions

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

My first cousin 's daughter and her husband are expecting. Jim and Adrienne (Jim was my cousin) were killed in a plane crash in December 2001, two months after their daughter's marriage. Jim's mom, Sarah (my Aunt) just celebrated her 90th birthday, and although they live far away, Sarah has always come to visit with my family. Shortly after my Mom died, I finally made the trip to Fl. to visit with Sarah in Spring of 1999, and I got to see Jim for the first time in 43 years and meet his daughters...it was the start of finally building a friendship after all these years. Well, my question is what is the relationship between Jim and Adrienne's daughters to me, and what will be the baby's relationship to me? I don't have very many blood realitives left, and I am really looking forward to getting to know Jim and Adrienne's daughters and taking an active part in their lives, even if it is long distance. Frankay's DW

Jim- first cousin.
Daugther-second cousin
Expected baby- third cousin
Congradulations on the new member to your family!

Perhaps you will want to work on a family tree. Check out the Gen Web sites or do a google search

It's not quite as simple as first, second, third cousin....I'll get Mom over here..(YoYo1) she knows all of the correct terminology....there is first cousin, once and twice-removed, and that _may_ be the correct terminology.

Don't want to discount the first suggestion, but I know that she's mentioned there's different levels of kinship and proper words to define them. Bernie may be right in this instance...but I'll ask anyway to be sure.

IndaShade may know also, as she's into charting families too.

Jim is 1 st cousin
daughter is 1st cousin once removed
baby is twice removed

Your children and Jim's daughter are 2nd cousins

It is generational, age has nothing to do with cousinship.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Mel and Frogs, it might be a "northern" thing as I originally hail from Massachusetts, but we've never referred to a cousin as twice removed, etc. If Jim's daughter's daughter had a daughter that would be Frankay's 4th cousin.

Where is IndaShade? Haven't seen her for a while....

I never used the terninology once removed but all the family tree programs that I have seen use it. I think it is correct in doing research and probably will become used more as more get in to searching for family and creating family trees.

Yeah, it's "correct" but it doesn't "feel good"...

LOL Darius!!!

Kathy, I just cannot see myself introducing a cousin's daughter as "This is my cousin once removed"...

removed to where?

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

frogrus is correct. Frankay's DW's children and Jim's children would be second cousins and Frankay's DW's grandchildren and Jim's grandchildren would be third cousins.

Edited to get the right person in there.

I have so many cousins that the 'once removed' bit doesn't bother me at all. It's kind of fun for me and helps me to keep the lines straight. If you aren't used to it, I can see how it would bother you.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Well and the bottom line is I don't think any of the cousins are removed by Frankay. I think he's still maintaining a relationship with them LOL...

Good reply, Kathy! (Sounds to me like he wants to keep them, too.)

I am not used to used to that "removed" thing either. I do have a double-first cousin though, because my aunt and my mom married brothers.

Using 'once removed' etc is appropriate for genealogical research but is seldom necessary in "real life" circumstances. My second cousin is,and always has been,Coleen.Sort of like calling a Ladybug a Coleoptera isn't it.

Kylertown, PA(Zone 5b)

Using the term "removed" just means that they are in a different generation than you are.

This explains it so much better than I ever could:

hmmm, I find the "removed" confusing. If someone tells me this is their cousin twice removed, I have to stop and figure out if it is a 2nd or 3rd cousin. In other words, a grandchild of the first cousin.
