New member-subscriber map

Interesting.

I wonder if the map reflects the number of people who garden in the different regions or if it is the difference in home computer access and total population in those areas that causes the white band effect.

I'm guessing that this map closely resembles regular population maps. Only a guess.

You can see every major city in the continental US represented here.

Is each dot representative of a cluster of subscribers or just one? What is the time span for the new subscribers? Very interesting though.

Each dot is one member. In the subscriber chart, every subscriber (regardless of their subscribed-date) is represented.

If folks don't renew their subscription, are they removed from the list as subscribers?

Yes.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

I am surprised that there aren't more people to the west, especially since you are in TX, Dave. Were you in TX when DG started and why do you think it is so concentrated in the East. :) Kathy

Kathy, population. :) There's less people in the west, in general.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Everyone must be blurred together- it doesn't look like enough dots for subscribers! Especially in Texas! And it does look like the map is tilting a little too far to the east- we need to get busy out here!

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

I vaguely remember a most interesting article I read several years ago. Had nothing to do with gardening per se but more culture and trending. The premise of that article agrees with what dave said about the population/square miles decreasing as you move from east to west, but it went on to make a case for why that is and another interesting (though debatable) phenomenon. The major populating of North America (i.e. post Columbus) occured from east to west and over the last 5 centuries that effect is still being felt. In other words, while more people have migrated west, more have also stayed or migrated from elsewhere (notably Europe) to the east coast of North America). The other point that article made is that trends, whether they are in technology, archetecture, fashion, whatever are more likely to start on the east coast and migrate to the west as well.

Just don't tell that to the fashionistas on Rodeo Drive (*grin*)

I thought we had talked about this recently.......here's the thread from July 2004 (just 3-1/2 short months ago) and look how it's changed! Dave do we have FEWER subscribers than we did in July??

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/445411/

Here's a map I posted in the old thread showing US population density from 1990 census.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=962685

The dots are just smaller now. :) We have many more subscribers now than then.

LOL...l didn't think it was possible to have fewer! Glad it was just dot size and not my eyes. Whew!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

This also resembles a rainfall map. (a little)

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

hmmmmmmm interesting that it also corrolates to rainfall....hadn't even thought of that.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

This is a 1990's map but it does graphically show the same population phenomenon as the membership map :~)

Dave, there appear to be BIG dots and TINY dots all over the map. Reason?

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

There are little dots touching each other, thereby forming bigger and bigger dots.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Well, that's a conundrum then. I know I am only one of 2 sucscribers in the extreme tip of southwestern NC (3 counties)... next closest are 2 in Franklin (next county over) and the woodspirit1 in Lake Toxaway (yet another county away).... so the dots are not accurate.

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

I think the map is intended to be a graphical representation of distrubution, not a head count. Images (in this case varying size "dots") are made up of pixels. When they are dense they form a solid mass and you don't see individual pixels. So the map could just as easily represent 2 subscribers, or 1, or 10. The map visually shows the ratio of subscribers in various locations, not the actual number of subscribers.

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

Somewhere I saw a satellite view of the United States at night with just the lights and it pretty much looked like these maps also, except it was black and white.

I knew that!
I tried posting the whole NASA picture twice, but it keeps disappearing. The website is out of site.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

This IS interesting! Just out of curiosity, is there one for Canada? Just judging from the folks on the Canadian forum, I'd guess that the subscriber map up here closely parallels our population as well - with perhaps some zonal influence favouring the west coast!...lol

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

WOW! I just happened to click the hyperlink for the US located on the map story link Ulrich posted above. That link gives all sorts of interesting facts for the US. Our US Public Debt is 62.4% of what we produce and sell! (GDP)

Ulrich...is that satilite photos one of those that is updated hourly or so? If so an you are linking it directly from there instead of saving it as a static image that would explain why it is disappearing.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

PVille - that's not it as you have to save any pics to your hard drive and then upload it to DG. You can't hyperlink to a photo as an attachment.

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

Test.

Thought I had done it before but I guess not. Must have been at another site.

Ulrich, that second photo is a zero bite file which is why it is not displaying.

spklatt, when they took that picture of the Whole Wide World (WWW) you guys in Canada forgot to turn the lights on. Better luck next time.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Nuts, I knew there was something I was supposed to do that night!

Newburgh, IN(Zone 6a)
