Do you remember any?
Going back to Memory Lane
I remember all of them so that makes me older than dirt!!!!
What a wonderful trip down Memory Lane! :)
I guess the younger generations have absolutely NO idea what the "Watching the Submarine Races" was/is, LOL! (I had forgotten about that phrase myself until it came up on on the website.)
I was looking for my skate key the other day :-) Really!
I have a pair of skates like I once had but I bought them at a garage sale. I don't have a key though. I used to skate to school when I was in the lower grades. I would hang my skates in the cloak room during the school day.
Ha, ha, ha!
Isn't reassuring to find out that the little grey cells are working. And who really cares how old timers one can be!
cristina, thanks for posting . I sent to a couple of my age friends, don't think my daughter would have enjoyed it as much. Donna
WHAT?? No one mentioned my comment about "watching the submarine races" LOL. Am I older than all of you?
I don't remember reading that in the list. I don't have a clue what that is but didn't want to admit my ignorance on the subject. LOL
Yes indeed Darius,we often went to the beach and watched the submarine races. It could get pretty 'exciting' couldn't it.
balvenie... glad someone else remembers "submarine races"... :)
Our spot was usually down by the lake near my grandfather's house where I lived, although one time it was waaaay south in the tomato fields around Homestead (FL) and we got stuck in the field with a flat tire, LOL.
Let's keep Elena "guessing/wondering" a bit longer, eh?
I remember when gym uniforms not only were UG-LY! They also had to be crisply starched and ironed. And your required white tennies had to be washed and spotless for gym inspection every Monday morning! OK, how many of you tried to get another week's wear out of your gymsuit? Or tried to use white shoe polish to pass inspection when you forgot to wash your tennies? Or tried to fake clean socks, or forgetting your socks, with Kleenexes???
And, being a car fan back then, when you could actually identify each car brand from another, I have to protest! The part of the link that talks about wanting a '57 Chevy was very true. What a beautiful car!!! But the car shown below this on the link is actually a '56 Chevy! BIG difference! For a look at the '57 Chevy, you have to look further down in the link, where they actually show one.
My future in-laws owned a 53 Chevy, which was the transportation for many a date. I knew the difference between all makes and year models of every car made and on the road. If you didn't, you just weren't "hip."
I owned, at one time, a '55 Chevy, which was yellow and white, and resembles the '56, but was much better styled than the '56 (not my choice, but available). I also acquired, not by choice, a '56 Chevy, two-toned green.
I bought for myself a '57 Chevy, stick shift, two-toned aqua with chrome fin and strips. Now that was a truly beautiful car. I loved it, and still long for it. Wish I had kept it! Of course, all these Chevys were used. I couldn't afford a new Chevy. But that didn't matter.
The Chevy models for the years after this have not nearly equaled this special point in time in terms of pretty, or special. (Well, I could never afford a Corvette, so I can't speak about it!) But to me, nothing since has every compared with the '57 Chevy.
Of all the '57 cars available, the Chevy I bought was by far the most beautiful car (to me). I'm proud to say I actually owned one of the prettiest color combinations that was ever made (IMHO)! And I've never owned a Chevy, nor wanted to, since!
Just my 2 cents worth.
BTW, McDonalds was in the future for me. My younger cousins introduced me to this "treat." I asked them, "What was the attraction here? We're used to Drive-ins with full service. Here, you have to go inside to order. What's the point? Why don't you have drive-ins, with carhops??? (silly me) And the burgers aren't nearly as good, for twice the price!!!"
We also had drive-in movies then! Much more fun and convenient for girls than standing in line. The guy-dates always walked to the concession stand for everyone in the car for popcorn and drinks. Tickets were bought as the car entered the drive-ins. Double-dating was great!!!! Tickets and concession food was a lot cheaper then, too!
Krystal had 10, then 12 cents, hamburgers. Little "square buns, with grilled onions and mustard." Delicious! And the local BBQ drive-in had BBQ sandwiches and hamburgers for about 15-20 cents. A Godsend to those of us earning $1/hr minimum wage then.
I could get lunch at the downtown Krystal Burgers/Chili or Nu-Way hotdogs for $.25, if I ordered water instead of a Coke or Tea. I must have downed hundreds of these in my late-teens/early 20s, to keep upkeep costs down.
I also learned, the hard way, that walking from my office for several blocks to downtown for these culinary treats, was really hard on my shoe leather. Wore out the soles pretty quick. What a dichotomy for a young working female to face! No one changed into their Nikes, or whatever. You wore your best dress heels, wherever you went, if you were a working woman. No wonder I had to have foot surgery later! (pointed toes were THE STYLE!) DO NOT succumb to this madness with your own feet, please!
Ah, the good ol' days?!?!!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?
Judith, those were SOME cars, weren't they?
MY first car was a '55 Ford. Actually, that's not quite true. My first car was a 1953 Buick-tank my mother gave me in 1960 when she re-married and her new husband bought her a newer car. The '55 Ford was the first car I selected and bought for myself, soon after I got the Buick.
My high school boyfriend's father bought a brand-new '57 Chevy, and soon afterwards, Charlie got to drive it for a date with me. Unfortunately, he let me drive it, and I managed to hit another car coming out of the drive-in burger hangout. His father about skinned him alive.
I bought a 1960 Chevy convertible in 1962 and was restoring the "terminal rust" that Florida cars got back then (and there was a LOT of it!). I totaled it when someone ran a stop sign, but the engine was still good so I bought a '55 Chevy body (with a Hurst shifter) and had the engines swapped. I drove that '55 Chevy to Maryland when I moved soon afterwards, and for another 3 years after that. It had the 283 engine, the best I think Chevy ever made.
Like you, "I also knew the difference between all makes and year models of every car made and on the road. If you didn't, you just weren't "hip."
Today, they are all so homogenous.
I loved it cristina. Thanks for sharing that link. I was pretty good with a Hula Hoop if I remember correctly and I loved "Candy Cigarettes". LOL
I.m so glad that you've enjoyed because I did also.
I agree, those cars were a beauty! and also the drive-in!
Now, please tell this inland lady about submarine races!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ellen... it had nothing to do with either being on the water or inland. It was a common phrase used in the 50's for going to a secluded spot and "making out" LOL.
Well, I was a submarine race watcher and didn't even know it. LOL! Imagine that! We had a gravel pit just outside of the city limits that served that purpose in W. Monroe, Louisiana where I grew up. It wasn't exactly secluded however cause everyone was there. (About as desserted as the local drive-in theater on Sat. night.) There was safety in numbers though.
LOL, Ellen. And as to "safety in numbers"... remember The Hook??
No! I must not be very knowlegable about much of anything?
Oh, Ellen... I'll bet you will remember...
This young couple is out parked on a country road. The girl is real nervous and uneasy. It seems that there had been a report about an escaped criminal in the area. He was supposed to be dangerous, a mad killer. They called him "The Hook" because one of his hands was missing and he wore a hook in place of it. He was supposed to have used it on all of his victims.
Anyway, the girl was real uneasy for some reason. Supposedly, they were not aware of the escaped killer. She kept saying she had an uneasy feeling but she did not know why. The guy finally got mad at her. He thought she was just making up excuses because she didn't want to park. Finally he lost his temper and stepped on the gas. He really tore out of there fast.
He didn't say a word on the way home. When they get to the girl's house, he just got out and went around to open her door. When he got to the door, there was a hook hanging on the handle.
Where was I when this happened? I don't remember it at all! What year was it? We were in Alaska in 1955 and 1956. Maybe we didn't hear about it there.

Ellen I remember it from about 1954-1960. It was a story put out to keep kids from parking and making out...
Goes hand in hand with the old story... "I'm on the First Step... I'm on the Second Step..." and on and on... good fireside stories.
I was already an old married lady in 53 ( I had just turned 17 and still had a year of high school to complete) and didn't get into what was happening with the people who were still parking. LOL! I finished that year of school and shortly after that we headed to Alaska when Albert got drafted. I do remember telling the fireside stories to my girl scouts when we had campfires. Nobody was going to sleep anyway!!!!!
I remember "the hook" story! Geez, I had forgotten all about it. It still sends shivers up my spine! 1956-61
Ellen, I didn't realize you are older than I am, by 4 years. No wonder you missed some of the slang, but just barely, LOL!
Yeah, Darius, you were never in the running for oldest person at the roundups. You are a mere baby. We OLD ladies "were slugging it out" for top honors there for a while. Now we just fight over chocolate. LOL
