Do TIFFs look better than lower "quality" pics on DG?

I ask that question because there's no reason to shoot and upload TIFFs to DG unless there is a noticeable improvement that's apparent in the final posting of the picture. Maybe a high resolution TIFF downsized to 640 X 480 to fit DG does look better than a pic shot at 640 X 480 and a standard "quality" in the first place.

The reason for the question is that shooitng TIFFs limits what some cameras can do such as in fps shooting "bursts" - in additon to the lesser number of pics per session, just to name a couple.

If you upload a TIFF image to DG, the system here will automatically convert it to jpeg, destroying any benefit that the tiff once had. So, you might as well make it easier and jpeg it before uploading (also, tiff's are massive files, while jpeg are nice and small, in terms of bytes. This makes it much faster to upload, and easier on my bandwidth bill!) :)

Sounds like we both have good reasons for avoiding TIFFs.

I'll do my part and stick to standard quality 640 X 480 s

Thanks.

I save most of my web-intended photos at a quality of 7 (70%) in Irfanview and that seems to make a good image. Another thing which will minimize the size is to make sure your program is not saving EXIF info (though for some sites like treklens.com and others which pull shooting data from that info, you'd want to keep that). Photos with large areas of similar color, such as blue skies, tend to show compression artifacts much moreso than "busy" photos with lots of colors and textures; those benefit from being less compressed, saved at 75% or 80%. "Busy" ones you can sometimes get away with as little as 60-65%. Best thing to do is do several "save-as" on the image at different compressions and then view them. You could post them to the test forum in one thread and compare them together.

Thanks GW;

As usual you are right on target. I will follow your advice.
