Canadian RoundUp

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Lily, just up early snooping around the forums and after reading this I had a Light Bulb moment. Could you consider a February or March "Snow Bird" round-up in Florida? I only consider this because I see so many tags from Canada and therefore belive yall like to come here and this would be fun for all.Sidney

LOL........*very* tempting sugarweed!! :D I'm sure we'd all love some of your sunshine come Feb. Will see what the others post.......it will be a fair chunk of Airmiles to get there.

You are right tho' about us Canadians......there is something very appealing about Florida in February. SUN, heat, blue skies......

Thanks for the suggestion! Personally I'd have to decline this time 'round, as I really need to visit some folks on Canada's west coast, and was hoping to do that on the same trip as the RU. However - if there are a lot of takers for Florida, I will cheer you on & be there in spirit! I'll even take my parka off for a minute, in honour of it... ;-)

Florida sounds great, but I doubt we can bring our plants and do the trading. I've only been to FL once, and that was to Tampa, before geting on a ship to do the cruise thing. Was a great vacation! We hope to do it again some time.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

It was a lovely idea sugarweed, and as much as I'd love to visit your fair state, I think we Canucks would have far less hassle if we stayed here in Canada for our RU. Maybe some other time. It would be great to meet y'all. :)

Answer to your question Lilypon; yes you can get snow in the higher elevations in the mountain passes at the end of March, beginning of April. Not normally that bad though. You drive through it fairly quickly when you start to decend again.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

this is getting better by the moment! What a great idea!.............Elaine

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Sugarweed I would love to but I think I'd be eyeing one in about 5 years time....serious plotting, planning and saving would have to be done to do that trip justice! ;)

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Pam my van is all wheel drive and believe the mountains aren't going to throw anything at us that I don't deal with every am going to the stables.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Right now DD is demanding that she be brought along as well.....are you prepared for two of us? This of course could change but she is pretty sure.....even tho' I have warned her this will be a plant trip!

Thanks for the heads up on your vehicle Lynn...DH was thinking it might be difficult getting through at that time of year. Reading what Donna said has made it a little less worrisome as well.

April 1-5 is probably much better than March weatherwise. Count me in, it should be fun. There'll be me and Oscar and hopefully Liz. I'll bring brugs, shade perennials, lots of other stuff.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well it can go on the back burner for a few years. Anyone heading down 95 can e-mail me. I dont have room for overniters yet, but love to meet gardners.

Oh sure, you guys have to pick the one week when I actually WON'T be in Victoria. I NEVER travel, hardly ever. That just happens to be mother-In-laws 90th birthday week in Saskatoon, and I will miss all the good times with you guys!!! We need to go a bit early, and we will probably do some visiting while we're out there, since, as I said, we never go anywhere. We are just home bodies, and love Victoria. (It also might have something to do with the last time we drove out here in the winter, it was -40 when we left Edmonton, we froze until we got out of the mountains, and we said we'd NEVER do that again!!)
If I have any plants or seeds, I will make sure LInda or Heather have them. I am going to take some log cuttings of my brugs this week(they are unknowns), and will keep them over winter. And I am drying white dat seeds right now.

Yes Pam I copy you on that and DD is more than welcome.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Maybe go a week later.
Inanda But no later than that.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks Lynn.......she's never been to the coast and is chompin on the bit!

So is a week later a possibility?

Glends, would a week later work for you?!

Would you be back in Victoria by then?

North Saanich, Canada

LInda, we just arent' sure yet exactly how long we will be gone. Birthday is on April 8, but we will be going out several days before that, and probably doing some visiting around Saskatchewan before we head back. There's a possbility I might be here some of the time, so maybe I can get in a day or two!!!! Will need to wait till closer to the time. No firm plans yet.

When do you start taking mulch off in the prairies? This is my first year for mulching really well. Don't worry. Haven't put it on yet. Waiting for real freezeup and mice etc. to be safely housed elsewhere. One thing, the later we go, the more there is to see!!!!!!! (& crave)

Am watching this thread with interest. I'll wait until everyone's decided on a date before I join in, as my time is flexible.

I too will have to wait until I know if I'll be able to drive by then.

Victoria,, BC(Zone 8b)

I have not been checking this thread over the weekend and was amazed at how it has progressed. If everyone decides on Victoria, I live very near MG99 (Linda) and can offer some accommodation if this pans out. Sounds very exciting! Look at this Glenda! My first picture post! This was taken in my front yard in August.

Hi Heather,

What a magnificent visitor in your lovely garden. A gorgeous, and seemingly relaxed, buck.

Heather, I've been waiting for the picture. Heather told me about him eating his lunch there, then sitting and resting for 4 hours.

We really are in a great part of the world.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

He is magnificent. I know it 's hard to remember when they are eating your little green shoots in the spring, but WOW how can you not love them.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOL.....I didn't see him at work (the monitor shows a much darker picture). That one certainly is a keeper and we are so glad you've figured out your camera!

Lynn some people are wondering about a week later......how would that work for you?

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Have to check the books at work and will get back to you on that.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Oh and inanda DD is 19.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Any closer to making a decision?

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I don't know what happened, but this topic really fizzled...about the time someone suggested moving it one week later in April. Is there still interest?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

Oh yes...........I'm in! E

I'm still interested.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Me too.
