Seed Snatching Mission
Carol, wow! Is all I can say!!! You have been one busy snatcher!!!
Yes, and that wasn't my first or last sorte. I do this every year, and every year I find more and more kinds of seeds!
Guess what I snatched yesterday? Forgot to mention earlier. Cotton! Don't even know why I got it except it was there! I figured someone would get a kick out of it! Very hard to get the seeds out though - and it was a planted field so I don't even know if they will be viable - they might be sterile! I am going to try one though - the plants were kinda neat.. I had my eyes peeled Carol, I was pretending to be you! Course I don't have quite the selection that you do!!
Had to visit for my afternoon chuckle!!!!
I'm trying to get my daughter to take me to the Chicago botanical gardens. Of course I would be armed with a bunch of plastic bags in my pockets. I guess using plastic cups would be easier, but harder to conceal. One of these days!!!!
djm906 - Ohhhhh No!!!! They would put you in jail for sure!!!! I can just see a new thread "Please Send Bail Money!!!"
nc, good for you, though I don't imagine I'll be growing any cotton up here... well maybe Alaska Cotton Grass! LOL!
djm, just call and a bunch of us will head down to the Cook County jail and 'spring ya'!
OMG, this is hysterical. I thought I was weird to have a shovel, ziplocks, paper towel and water in the back of my jeep at all times!!! My children really had me convinced for a bit.
ladyaannne, you are in good company! They should have a retirement home for old gardeners, and when we pass away, they can spread our ashes over the compost pile!
Weezingreens I love that Eye of the Tiger, just wish I had a way of collecting seeds like that
Kareoke, these seeds were collected from a box built at the corner of our house. In 2003, I planted it with three kinds of violas... Eye of the Tiger, Velour Blue Bronze, and Penny Orchid Frost. In the fall, I collected seeds from all of them, not knowing which was which... it wouldn't have mattered anyway, since they had, no doubt, cross pollinated. I called it my 'Corner Box Mix', and last spring, I sowed the seeds indoors for sale in the spring. Later on, when the cell packs started blooming, I found myself snatching up the really nice ones to keep for myself. LOL!
When collecting seeds from a hybrid cultivar, you are going to see differences from the parent plant, but sometimes that is less important than avoiding paying $3 for 20 seeds of the original. To attempt to preserve the seeds as close to original as possible, grow them in a pot far away from other types of violas in an attempt to avoid cross-pollination with another cultivar.
I'm in here again... I made my DH (BigDaddy99) read this thread so he wouldn't think I was the only one with this type attitude.
While he was reading and laughing, it reminded me of an "article" I was sent via email a couple of years ago. It was about preparations females make to meet the public in each phase of our life. It ended by saying something about, reaching a point where we just put on the Red Hat and go!!! No longer worrying about what people think!!!
The contributors to this thread are certainly members of
Dave's Red Hat Club!!
(does anyone by chance have this article?)

Judy, a true hearty ROLF here. I sent it to my hunnie, my kids, and other friends who think we were the only ones "borrowing" seeds!!
Judy, you are so RIGHT!! I finally hit that phase in life where I no longer care what others think of me.. It is such a relief!! It happened after I had my son and I realized that appearances do not count near as much as my happiness!! I took today off from work to garden and at the end took a shower (I was covered in cow manure), dried my hair, pulled it up and WENT (to pick up my son from day care.) Didn't even feel guilty for letting him be in day care while I indulged myself! I am 34 years old - I know don't give me a hard time! - and WISH so much that I would have 'awakened' 10 years ago!!! Life is just too short!~
Ok, enough of my getting off the subject!!!
Thanks Judy -
Nicole

:-) I love that poem....even tho I will never be an old woman.....I think the overall mood is just so very perfect....and yes I plan to wear purple and a floppy red hat :-)
Marc, Thank You, Thank You for finding this for us!!!!
Ohh Weez ..
You, and some others here in this thread .. are jes outragously hilarious! LOL
Ahhh Weez .. looks like there jes may have to be a brand new 'term' added to DG's Garden Terms . . . Cleptobotanic. And one of the definitions mite need to be .. (weez's) seed pickin' elsewhere, than ...
.. hee hee .. Hmmmmmm ...
Ahhh, Weez .. please know that I'm only teasin' ya a bit!!
- Magpye
Insanity has just been indentified. Well, ummm, one particular brand.....cleptobotania!!!! I love it, Magpye!
Three cheers, Magpye! Cleptobotania... I love it! I recall someone on one of the threads mentioning they were so obsessed with seed collecting that they found themselves eyeing the poppyseeds on their sandwich bun! Now that is a true cleptobonaniac!
I have a copy of that poem, given to me by my stepdaughter many, many years ago. When I first moved to Seward, I was amused by all the old time Seward 'characters'. Now that 30 years have gone by, I've seen many of these charming folks grow old and pass away. At one funeral I remarked, "What are we going to do when all the old town characters are gone?" Someone replied, "We'll become the old town characters." .... and we have!
I want to be the weird old woman living at the edge of town at the end of the road in the classic thatched roof cottage (gotta have the intriquing tiny attic window with shutters, too) with the overflowing English style gardens, stone fences, little gate, animals of every kind. If you actually get to know me, you find out I make the best ccc's in town and I am not as scary as the kids think I am and my teas soothe the wildest of days. What am I talking about? Change the setting and I am already there! Old town characters, yup, we are. In purple!
GO ladyannne! Sounds like the ideal setup! Throw in some wine and NO DH and you just described my dream!
No Rikerbear I promise I am not man bashing! Just MINE. LOL
With all the seeds we all are gathering we will have some good lookin' gardens come Spring!!
;)
Weez, I just checked on the dried/soaked/drying seeds. Looks like they are going to be ok! Thank you, wise one.
I have a wonderful DH (thank God and pass the ammunition) who owned a wholesale nursery for years, so we garden happily. Someday, I might just be without him, and then I will do that dream. Meanwhile, I am just the neighborhood witch. I could even try and make my own wine, heh..heh....
Neighborhood witch eh? You mean like chasing cars and yelling SLOW DOWN! That's me.. Not the chasing part so much though!
My DH recently followed a salesperson (here they stick push pins INTO your your mailbox) all around our neighborhood making him take ALL the push pins out! It was pretty funny. My DH followed him around on his Harley. Poor salesrep, probably scared him half to death... DH not all bad, I just like a little more space! Only child here, not used to the constant noise.
A DH that had a nursery business? Wow did you rack up!
Promise I am not trying to change the subject! Let's talk about seeds!!! Who's for cotton? LOL
Nicole
hhmmm, any chance of providing a link of what it looks like?
Good Question! I already asked my DH to take the digital out to his hunting sight to take a pic and he said it was too much trouble! DUH - I need to do a bit of research, I don't want to assume the seeds are even viable since these are commercial plants I scarfed them from..
Will get back to you on that!
Nicole

Cuse my ignorance folks but this would be the first time I've attempted to create a link! I STILL haven't seen if the seeds are any good but I don't see why not. Maybe dear ole DH can grab some more on his next deer murderin' trip!
LOL.. Hope this link thingy works!
Nicole
I am going to soak one of the seeds and see what happens!

Link worked fine Nicole. Good Job!
If anyone out there wants to grow this stuff let me know quick - they will be harvesting the plants soon.. I need to get my DH to grab a bunch next visit.. I probably have 20 seeds now but haven't pulled the cotton off them to see for sure!
Thanks Marc!! Dang that was so easy!
Nicole
Edited to say that I don't say 'Dang' in real life! I may be from the South but I can steel talk good! LOL

Addict, that is probably why you will see my name in the ID forum alot. I have almost all the plants in the yard, planted by my hunnie's late wife, identified. On top of owning all these, I am still a cleptobotanic. There's no satisfying some people some days.
Wow! Sounds like you have been busy!!! Good job! Being a cleptobotanic is a good thing! Esp for your friends!
Well, we've been out on a little road trip. I spotted an empty commercial building "for sale" with wonderful flower beds ... the perfect place to snatch. Then I remembered I left the fire on under a pot of beans (truly had). DH said he was going to tell ya'll, at the last minute I had just lost my nerve!!!
Maybe tomorrow, or the next day, and of course there's always next week...
LOL Judy, you can do it!! We believe in you! Save the seeds!
:-}~
I think I will stop by Starbucks on the way home so I can make my way over to their wonderful Perennial plantings and steal more seeds.
Sweezel, don't think of it as stealing the seeds, but more as 'liberating' them......... LOL
Yes! Saving them from certain death!
