Journal Entry Matched to PDB entry

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Dave -

I know that Journal entries that found a match in the PDB on Genus, Species and Cultivar use to show a hyperlink to the PDB entry when viewing the Journal item. Has something gone funky there? Take a look at these.....I think that I should be getting a PDB link in my Journal for RID 50323 with a match to PDB item 53070 (Ipomoea batatas 'Ace of Spades') Do I have some silly typo that I'm not seeing or is the feature disabled?

BUMP....... yoohoo Dave....

You have quotes in the cultivar field. Quotes don't belong.

Actually they are apostrophes and I've ALWAYS entered my cultivar that way and had matches to the PDB before. Guess I'll remove them from all 385 entries! *UGH*

Remove it for just one and see if it makes a difference.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Yep...It did. But I KNOW I have always used apostrophe's in my cultivar name and I use to have PDB links appear. Do you think you might have changed something in that regard in say the last few months?

I know this because I use to use the Journal PDB to queue me to go in and add a zip code report to the plants I grow. Now that's not showing up.

It's no big deal....I'll go through the winter and fix the cultivar names, but I'm just curious if that changed at some point. Thanks for straightening me out on what was causing the problem.

That's a real oddity. I really don't know why it would have worked before, and not now, unless I did some changes to it in recent months (which is possible).

Sorry :(

I can't figure out how to enter my plants in the journal so the PDB link comes up. How should I do it? can someone give me an example?
Thanks,
Cindy

Cindy,

I think it has to be an exact match. I checked one of your journal categories (daylilies) and you have hemerocalis as the speicies rather than genus for all of them and it is mispelled. I think that may be the problem.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Daylilies won't ever match the PDB.....here's why. The match feature is done using both Genus and Species. If you look at the PDB there are no entries (or at least very few) that have a species listed. They are are all in as just Hemerocallis in the Genus field. Thus, your Journal entry cannot be matched on Genus AND species so no link is made.

There was a thread awhile back that discussed making a match on Genus AND Cultivar, but I don't think Dave has changed the logic yet.

Dave - if I said that wrong please clarify.

If in the PDB the species is blank and in the journal the species is blank, that would be an exact match.

Not in the current code.

Oops! I better correct my spelling. Thanks Pvilleplanter.
langbr,If the PDB link doesn't work on daylillies, how do I enter the names of other plants so it will work?

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

You need to match exactly the Genus and Species names at a minimum. If you want to match a cultivar it must match the PDB entry exactly.

Here's an example

Thanks so much Brenda. I will try that! I think I was listing the genus and species backward.

You're very welcome, Cindy! I just peeked at your Journal and you do need to swap genus & species in your Journal entries. *sigh* more work! Good winter project though. :-)
