Pray for me :)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Good for you!! I quit years ago and it was hard. My mom STILL smokes and tries to hide it from my 2 yr old (only grandchild) but he knows. Children are smart!

This might help in your fight - my Aunt just finished many treatments of chemo after discovering that she had small cell (basel?) lung cancer. They managed to shrink it to oblivion and then had to give her chemo on her brain because the small cell shows up there frequently. We are praying for her! I may be misquoting to the hilt here but I believe that I read somewhere that cancer has killed more folks than alcohol and drugs combined? That may be wrong.

Quitting smoking is so hard - I can't imagine those who are addicted to stronger things. Once you get that stuff out of your system though you won't believe how much more energy you have! Well I did anyway... Good Luck~

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, JR and GardenAddict for the stories. My health is the big reason I am quitting. GardenAddict, a little know fact: did you know that addiction to smoking is worse than the addiction to heroin? I always wondered about that because there are some people who can put cigarettes down and never smoke again without any problem. My doc said those people are rare and that they do not have the "addiction" that most of us have to cigarettes. Sure wish I was one of those rarities!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow - and cigarettes are still LEGAL!

What you say is the truth trunnels.

JR

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

NC, not only are cigs still legal, they are produced by the largest lobbiest group in Wasghinton DC. The monies pumped into various campaignes and 'pockets' are vast. Not to mention the billions of dollars raised by state giverments in the form of 'sin' taxes. There is SO much money at stake when it comes to tabacco, that I feel safe in saying IT will alwasy be legal and available.

This political announcement has been brought to you by "Portable Soap Box" :-)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I can tell you 2 things that are so wrong. You see what state I live in right? Well, as a child our school class took a trip to guess where? Reynolds tobacco company!!! We saw how they made cigarettes - I can still remember how good they smelled while they were making them (think that contributed to my starting at age 17). The other thing is - I went to my college roomates doctor with her on the 'campus' of Reynolds. Guess what they had in the waiting room? Ashtrays!!!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

You know it's the money. Otherwise they would be banned because of the statistics of cause of cancer!

Temuco, Chile(Zone 9b)

Bravo trunnel, it is good to give it up. I'm sending you lot of luck and
confidence .

Hi Trunnels
Had to add my 2 cents worth. In 1980 my doctor told me that if i did not stop smoking I would be dead in less than a year! My blood profile was that toxic.(2 pak a day habit) Hearing that I took my cigarettes and threw them in his wastebasket. That was 24 years ago. I also avoided being around people that smoked and my home became a smoke free home. Second hand smoke is just as bad. Never had a problem with any of my friends, as a matter of fact, they had more respect for me as your friends should have in your wine drinking gathering. Believe me, if they knew you were trying to quit and smoked in your presence, they are not your friends. You can do it if you realize what's at stake!!! One Day at a Time - Hourly if necessary. If your craving seems to overcome you call an understanding friend or best yet go to a "smokers anonymous" meeting. Don't knock it till you've tried it!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Tplant! Thanks for the encouragement. Unfortunately, I was visiting THEIR home and I don't think it was my place to tell them they could not smoke in their home. They would have been justified if they asked me to leave! I made it just fine and truthfully, was glad to have the test. I have been quit for 6 Days, 13 hours, 9 minutes and 38 seconds (6 days). I have saved $19.63 by not smoking 130 cigarettes. I have saved 10 hours and 50 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 10/9/2004 Woo hoo!!

Attagirl Terrie!!

TC

Santa Clara, CA(Zone 9a)

Congratulations to all of you, the stories of success are great.

I wonder if it is harder to smoke in California versus other states. We have very strict laws here now about not being able to smoke in restaurants, bars, offices or within so much distance from the front of buildings so you aren't around second hand smoke at all.

What are the laws in other states?

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Same in Dallas. No smoking in restaurants and 20 feet from building.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Just plum tickled pink and proud FOR you trun !!!

But, I thank ya mite've fergot sumthin' ...
REF: " I have been quit for 6 Days, 13 hours, 9 minutes and 38 seconds .. "

Welllll, seein's that Dave . . . being our faithful administrator/owner/ webmaster .. and, presidential candidate-to-be . . . faithfully uses this heuh 'measurement' on his {'our'} very own website here - - - I jes kindly figger, that it must rank a mite bit somewhat 'portant stuff to include in your 'kalkulaytin' too !!! Fer example: Timer: 11.36 jiffies (0.11359405517578).

You done up and forgot to put in yore 'JIFFIES' ! ! !

.... LOL ....

Ohh trun .. YOU have just GOTTA be some kind of gosh awful PROUD of yaself !!!

Oh, Mags, you're too smart for me!!

Newburgh, IN(Zone 6a)

Trunnels, Good for you!!! Smoking is a real burden to you and your family, not only on your body but on your pocketbook too. Just think how many new flowers you can put in your garden next spring. For every pack of cigarettes you don't smoke put that amount in your garden fund. I will be looking for all your new plants in the spring. It is really hard, I know, I quit smoking many times before I kicked the habit. I have been smoke free now for 26 years.. It is really hard when you go out to restaurants here in Indiana, they have non smoking areas in most restaurants, but the bars and any other social areas, like bowling etc are so smokey you cannot enjoy them. I will say a prayer for your success and the new success of your garden due to your success. Yvonne

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the encouragement Yvonne.

I have been quit for 1 Week, 5 hours, 41 minutes and 44 seconds (7 days). I have saved $21.70 by not smoking 144 cigarettes. I have saved 12 hours of my life. My Quit Date: 10/9/2004

Anyway, keep it up on the NO SMOKIN'! You will be on the down hill slide before you KNOW IT!!!!!

Back hurtin, brain fried, must go now!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Nicole! Thanks for visiting my thread again. I really appreciate all the encouragement! Went to a party last night and thought it was going to be tough because of all the smokers that would be there. Shoot, it was a breeze!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I have been quit for 3 Weeks, 47 minutes and 49 seconds (21 days). I have saved $63.09 by not smoking 420 cigarettes. I have saved 1 Day and 11 hours of my life. My Quit Date: 10/8/2004

LOL Mags! I just posted in TC's thread a minute ago. Just kinda dropped this one since I started it before I knew about the thread in the Health Forum.

Glad to hear you haven't taken leave of Dave's! Just hadn't seen you post anywhere in awhile. One of these days I'm gonna be so busted for hanging out here at work.

My husband would say the same thing about withdrawal pains! He says we are all garden geeks. LOL At least I sit next to him on the couch with my laptop while he stares at the TV in the evening. I told him it wasn't any different for me to hang out at Dave's than it is to watch that dang TV as long as we're sittin' next to each other!

So is it getting cooler your way? I really don't like the cold at all (it makes my joints hurt) but I wish we would get a little cold snap so our foliage would have a change to change colors before the winter knocks em' all off.

Nice talkin' to ya again!!

... (bumperoonie) ...

Count-down time Terrie !!!

March is nearing quickly ... to your being a first-time 'MawMaw' !!

HeeHee ... What a day I opt to post this on - knowing full well, that you probably won't get around to taking any such
reads and/or replies - 'till well after 'baby new year' has plop'd himself and his 'nappie' (as Philomel calls them!) .. on all of
our doorsteps!!
...

Ahhh, all the more reason on this particular day, for a 'bump up', tho'. For I want to tell you, 'Congratulations', once
more .. for giving yourself .. a most wonderful gift!

And to say, MERRY CHRISTMAS and Happy New Year .. to you and yours Terrie !!!

- Magpye

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

How sweet of you, Mags. Yes,the time is fast approaching. I swear, her pregnancy is going soooo much faster than any of mine ever did! LOL

Hope you had a wonderful, spiritual Christmas with your family and hope everyone enjoyed their hand-carved (with love) presents. Did they just love the little log cabin?

I will be a quitter for 3 months next week and am so glad there will be a new generation in my family who will never know me as a smoker. :-)

Wishing you and yours a Happy New Year!
Hugs,
Terrie

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

The hardest (and BEST) thing you have ever done, my friend.

What helped me was changing things around so I answered the phone from a different place, watched TV from a different chair. My house has NEVER been cleaner nor my closets so organized!

Congratulations!!!

Danbury, NH(Zone 5b)

Hello

I have been crocheting like crazy since I quit, 4 years ago.
I hope you stick with being a non smoker, it will be one of the most difficult things you do, it was for me. I think it was worth it.
Linda

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Aloha and Linda!
I have definitely changed my routine which has really helped but, unfortunately, that doesn't include cleaning or organizing. :-)
Happy New Year!
