This is the second day of my "quit smoking" challenge. And it IS a challenge. I am determined to do it this time. My first grandchild will be born in March and I do not want to be a smoking grandmother. I am glad it is raining this weekend so I have to change my usual habit of being outside, in my gardens, and taking breaks with a smoke. Stuck in the house, I have to find things to do that I don't associate with smoking! Everyone concentrate real hard and send your vibes this way! LOL

Pray for me :)
Good Luck Terrie!! You definitely should check out the below threads. You are not alone! Hopefully you can find lots of inspiration.

Staci,
Thanks so much for passing on these threads. I just glanced through and realized I have a lot of reading to do :) as these are really long threads. Wow, wish I had done a search and just posted in one of these threads to begin with.
Well, be sure to post in the last one that you have joined the challenge. :)
Trunnels here is a big hug ((((((((((((((((((((Trunnels))))))))))))))))) to let you know you can make it. You go Trunnels.
I keep you in my prayers. I know this is a hard habit to break. Others here on DG are fighting the battle and winning and you will win too. Just don't take setbacks as defeats. Anytime you fail is just an indication you need to renew your determination.
Thank you all for your votes of confidence and encouragement. I've made it through two days now. Just a day at a time.
Good GOOD GOOD ... for you trunnels!!! ...
trunnels ... Please, know that nuthin' but good strong positive wishes and hopes are sent to you ....
- Magpye
Thank you, Magpye. You have mail!
Terrie you can do it! I smoked for 30+ years and managed to finally quit this past July. If I can do it ANYONE can. Just take it one cigarette at a time.....don;t think about tomorrow or next week, just about getting through the most current craving.
You can do it!!!!
Terri, Good luck and thanks so much for thinking of the baby. A fellow I know smokes a lot--around his grown daughter (who has severe asthma) and his young daughter (about 10 with same issue). I am only knowing of this due to "second hand" , so cannot re-arrange his thinking...
Thanks so much and hugs and strength go out to you....
Marc and Marcia, thank you so much for your encouragement. You wouldn't believe how much it helps. I've made it through my third day now and I'm just taking it a day at a time. I am determined to make it.
Good luck and congratulations, enjoy your new little bundle of joy when it gets here, bless you!
YAY !!! .. You's gettin' R dun hun !!! .. You made it thru the work day!! Yippee!! .. and two more YAYS !!!
Take yourself a gas mask to work with you ... for those 'breaks' ...
Some of the cigzoids that mite insist on managing to continue to smother your lungs ..
while pollutin' their own and everyone elses nearby .. while they're puffin' - will eventually get the hint !! ..
(That is .. unless .. you happen to be going into 'their' smokin' room) ... hee hee ..
And, if so, quickly find yaseff another'un .. to go break and breathe in !!!
.. LOL ..
You're opening yourself to a whole new kind of 'air' .. the good stuff .. that
we were meant to breathe and depend on .. for life!!!!
Hang in nar trunnels!! .. !! .. YAY !!
- Magpye
I stopped smoking in 1993--it was hard but it is so nice to be able to go where I want when I want and not have to worry about were or when I can smoke. That is really freeing. When you smoke it controls your life.
When my daughter was so sick in UAB hospital, they would take people out in their hospital gowns in wheelchairs to let them smoke. I thought, how sad, to want that smoke bad enough to go out on the streets of Birmingham in a hospital gown. By the way she was told to not even go into peoples houses that smoke. To never let enyone smoke around her again.
Sandra
Magpye, you are a doll. Thank you for making me laugh -- that is just what I need! Wonder where I can pick up a gas mask? LOL
Sitting here one voice is saying I NEED TO SMOKE while the other is saying another day!!
It's a wonderful life giving relief .. that our lungs and bodies SOOO appreciate !!
Am so glad and applaud anyone that puts the things down .. !!
trun .. I'm checkin' my storage closets now .. but all I've found so far, is an
ol dead cookie .. in my hubbys ol coat pocket !! .. hee ..
- mags
ahhh .. Your common sense and logic is reminding you .. that you've got another day under your belt .. and .. clearly what that other voice was really tellin' you, was ... you ' NEED a JOKE ' ... it jes gets a wee bit distorted sometimes, when tryin' to translate them brain 'synapses' ... ... hee hee
OMG, Mags, you are such a hoot! How long do you think that cookie has been in his coat pocket? Sure he wasn't carrying a mouse in his pocket to feed that cookie to?
Terrie
hmmmmmm .. come to think of it ... there was a wee hole .. but, it was in the other pocket!! ... hee
I felt so gosh awful plum ashamed of myself ... For I usually clean out and wash our winter clothing .. afore puttin' 'em away after the winter/cool seasons. I just happened to be getting ready to drag'em all back out .. for use, soon .. when I found that disgusting cookie.
( .. Least, I'm purtee certain it's a cookie ..?.. ) Heeeee
I've still got my supper dishes to 'warsh' (hee) up .. so I'm outta here for tonite. ... Hang tite trun ...
- Mags
Edited for words that go 'poof!' .. (geez, I sure can engage fangers quicker than my wee brain! hee)

Go Trunnels!! I've quit smoking so many times I get crosseyed just thinking about it. I have decided that I have absolutely no backbone, since I always start up again. I've done the patch, the pills, you name it....so all the good credit goes to you for sticking with it. I may quit again tomorrow. And the next day. There was an old song that went, "Smoke, smoke smoke that cigarette, Smoke it 'til you smoke yourself to death, Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate that you hate to make him wait, But you just gotta have another cigarette."
Just think how good that grandbaby will smell when your nose works like it should!!
Thanks, Meezer! I'm doing okay. The only way I could have done it, though, is with the medication. I am taking Welbutrin which takes the edge off of the withdrawal symptoms. I like that song! It would have been my motto. Like an alcoholic who is now sober and stands up at a meeting saying "Hi, I'm ____ and I'm an alcoholic," I think of my self as a smoker, who is now clean. Of course I have to fight it every day but I am winning.
Terrie
Just thought I'd sneak in here and say WAY TO GO TERRIE!!, I'm watchin ya! ;~)
TC...
Thanks, TC. It feels good to know someone really cares. How are you doing? Urges coming less often?
Yep, they come a whole lot less often now Terrie. I don't think I've had a real "bad" one for several days now.
Good for you, Trunnels! I know it won't be easy, but you are doing it for all the right reasons and you CAN do it. Like you say, a day at a time. Best wishes.
~Angela
Keep going. YOU CAN DO IT. We all have habits that need to be changed. I eat too much and have more diets and diet books and the desire is still not there. I'm 65 so it need to come on now. We are all with you, so show us your stuff.
Thanks, Angela and Gajade! This is my 6th day! Going through a lot of candy but no cigs!!
You can do it! Just take it slow, and don;t be hard on yourself.
Thanks, Marc. It's so great having my DG friends for support. Next I'll have to have support losing the weight I'm gonna gain from all the sweet stuff! :>)
You can do it trunnels! I used to smoke 3 packs a day and stopped at least 100 times before I finally got so fed up with the whole thing that I finaly stopped for good. Just think about all the money you are saving that you can spend on plants next year. Or you could put what you would have normally spent on cigarettes in a special fund for your new grandchild. Not only will he/she have a healthier grandparent, but also a nice little fund to use for college, ect. Keep up the good work!
Susan
I figure I attempted to quit 8,972 times....it worked this time. :-)
I have had a couple puffs now and again....and lordy are they aweful! It's like licking an ashtray.
You can do it Terrir....it really does get easier with time.
Thanks, Susan. That's a great idea about putting the money aside for grandchild!
Marc, I won't be able to take a couple of puffs even socially later on. I quit for ten years during my baby/small children stage and then thought I could only smoke socially. I started socializing A LOT MORE!!
:-) Oh I know it can be a hard fast trigger to a restarting......I certainly don't advise it.
I just don;t beat myself up for it when it has happened.
Talking about social smoking-I used to work with a lady that smoked at work on her breaks, but said she did not smoke at home, she said she didn't have time to smoke at home, always busy. I often wished I could be like that. I know now that a lot of my smoking was just a way of procastinating, I am going to smoke before I do the dishes, or before I start the wash, or--etc. I missed smoking for a while, but not any more, I am so glad I don't have to smoke and that was the way it was for me, I HAD to smoke, I was so addicted I all ways smoked 2 packs a day and sometimes would make 3 packs on a week-end day when I was not working. Hang in there girl, you will be glad you quit too
Sandra
trunnels, I didn't think I could ever stop smoking after a 40 year, 2 1/2 packs/day habit. My Mom died in 1985 of lung cancer, and my husband quit the next month, cold turkey. He cut a straw to the length of a cigarette and stuffed it with cotton, put it in his mouth and it worked for him - never picked up a cigarette again. The longer I smoked, the more I wanted to smoke and I believe manufactures were adding a more addictive element to the tobacco, and I was chain smoking big time. Tried gum, then hypnosis. Then decided I didn't really want to quit (advice was you had to want to quit to be successful), but I would quit nonetheless, so I tried the gum again and after 2 days and slightly diminished desire, decided this was the time to quit chewing the gum and stop smoking completely or I'd never make it. I stopped chewing the gum and made up my mind that I could never again pick up a cigarette; that was in 1996. In 2000, I aspirated some crackers and was coughing up blood. Yep, x-ray revealed an orange-sized cancerous tumor. Fortunately, it wasn't small-cell lung cancer and I'm still kicking and enjoying life. Nothing in my life was as hard as quitting smoking. But, once I made up my mind that I'd never pick up a cigarette, I haven't missed smoking. You've been successful for a number of days, and I believe you've kicked the habit. Congratulations, and may you inspire others to achieve the same success!
What great stories of inspirations here! I'm humbled.
TC...
I have been a Quitter for 3 Months, 1 Week, 4 Days, 19 hours, 27 minutes and 6 seconds (103 days). I have saved $622.85 by not smoking 3,114 cigarettes. I have saved 1 Week, 3 Days, 19 hours and 30 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 7/3/2004
Whoo boysers !! I tell ya .. All of you folks .. deserve some spayshall and mitey 'hearty' congratulations, to boot !!!
I'd been quit for 10 years (some 9 years ago) .. and hubby was forced to retire - used that, to start back. A 'comfort' you know .. Finally mastered that cease-fire. Then, off .. I move us to Arkansas .. and 'tried' to start back again. (I kindly sortee tried to blame it on our two youngest 'still' slightly 'teen' gals). And it worked, fer a lil bit - till my lungs informed me .. that the lame excuse jus wouldn't gonna fly!! .. hee hee .. I quit; then yet again, 'tried' to start back up .. blamed that one on our finances. A no-go, didn't stay down for the count!
Then, the very last time .. I tried to start - had by hubby to 'blame' yet once more. But, deliberately inflicting toxins into my body just to spite his 'backer' use - was sortee like cuttin' my nose off, to spite my face .. you know!?! Besides .. I kindly like lookin' at and having his ol mug around .. Hee Hee ..
So, it's been a good spell now ...
And altho', even after those bouts and the greatest amounts of time betwinx 'em ... I still get the cravings ever now and again. And to beat all, it's when I'm least 'expectin' them too - no one around smokin' or anything like that! It is, indeed, a most peculiar phenomenon ...
But I got it whooped. All it takes is to come within whoofin' distance .. of someone else's 'smokey' clothes, car, home .. or, their KIDS !!! .. Uugggh .. it's sickenin' !!!
Dang, I haint never been able to git them sayin's and 'cli-shays' rite .. but I'm gonna give it anuther go: Let's see, is it .. 'the battle is won, and the fight's half over'? .. or .. 'the battle's half fought, but the fightin' haint dun' ... or, sumpin lik'at .. or, none of the above .. no doubt! Ahh, never mind anyways . . .
Heck trun, I guess it's back to . . . " jes Git R Dun hun " !!
.. LOL .. (yep, I got my vary own built-in entertainment 'channel') .. hee hee
trunnels .. you've certainly got a proverbial ton of inspiration goin' fer ya, and a whole nuther batch of great support gettin' chunked over in ya basket too!
It all adds a whole new dimension to gardening don't it - with such 'rootin' goin' on !!

Mags,
I always love to hear from you! You just pick up my spirits no matter what I am doing. :-)
Thank you so much Pat and Sandra for the inspirational stories and support!
TC, you are just great!
Yoo, hoo!! I made it through two glasses of wine and 3 smokers last night!!! Had dinner at my stepdaughter and her husband's house for a going away party for my stepson. All three of them smoked (in the house, yet) and we had wine with dinner. If I can make it through that, I can make it through anything!!! Of course I want one like the dickens right now because this is when I usually go downstairs and take a smoke break from work but I've got a handle on it!!

trunnels, i quit smoking about seven years ago, and I know its' not easy. I have a brother that still smokes, and no matter how hard I try nothing works. Even thou I have emphysema. I tell people all the time to use me as an example. When you can't walk 10 feet without getting out of breath, do you really thank a smoke is worth it? After all , 5 minutes later you want another one. I love my garden, but the only way I can work is on my knees. The lungs want let me stand and do labor. Take each day at a time, and believe me, it will get easier. A month from now you'll be so proud of yourself. You'll start smelling the roses again and besides that , you'll smell better to. After a while you want want to be around people that smoke because they smell so bad. I hope I've given you some encouragement to hang in there. I don't want to sound like a reformed smoker, but if it helps you, so be it. Keep up the good work.
JR
