Flowers for the Fall in Zone 4

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

I am looking for advice and ideas for what to plant for flowers that are in bloom in the fall in New England. I ahve just begun to get into gardening and everything I have planted this far is about gone. Would be nice to have some perenials that are in blume this time of year. Anuals as well.

Any suggestions?

The only thing I have still blooming after the frost is mums. I don't know of anything else that would, but I would love to find some more also. My gardens are looking pretty sorry now.

I have the fall color of mums, the "ripened" color of the Autumn Joy sedum;and the maiden grass's gold leaf blades and white plumes; the neighbor's have asters blooming. I still have blooms on garden phlox (not many though and some on the butterfly bushes) . My spiderwort and ladybells are in their 2nd round of blooms. The toad lilies are just finishing-they do not like that first frost. I still see marigold, zinnias and the snapdragons for annuals around here.

MarciaGeiger,

Than sounds like a good start. I do have an aster and snapragons in bloom.

Purple dome asters and sedums are so pretty in the fall. I have white mums too but plan to not replace them if they winter-kill. Have lost too many of them over the years. Also have a few phlox blooming too. Butterfly bushes are not hardy enough for me either, but I just love them!
