What do critters in your garden do for you?

Other than making a mess at this time of year I was trying to think of benefits. The first thought that came to my mind was all the slugs that frogs and toads eat. I love my frogs and toads and they sure do keep the slug population at bay.

We have a ton of frogs outselves. I am so lucky that my DH agrees with me on the no weed killer approach!

We have bunches of spiders this time of year! I 'use' them to teach my son they are not to be afraid of and that they eat lots of bugs! We had a 'pet' spider this summer we fed Japanese beetles to! Don't know what kind of spider he was but he was BIG and made a tunnel out of his web.

Garden Snakes also, they eat the field mice we are always indundated with although I did catch one eating a frog. I made him let go of it but I imagine the frog died anyway...

Want to do a trade? LOL!

Hi Hope43, Sink a preform pond in your yard and the frogs and toads will find their way to your property. I saw them on sale at Home Depot and at Menards. I suspect Lowes has them on end of season sale too. I picked up a really nice 200 gallon preform for under $75. It had a nice shape too. All you'd need would be the basics and a few mosquito dunks and you'd be on your way. Just a thought.

Dragonflies bred in my pond. As far as I can tell, they ate every mosquito that came into the yard this year! BOY are they creepy looking when they are in the aquatic stage!

Wish my yard had snakes but 32 years of dogs have cleaned them out. I guess I have to settle for the birds who use the feeder and bird houses for bug patrol.

I was also sort of thinking about all those darned squirrels that have been causing me so much grief. They really do a great job at spreading acorns around and they sometimes even scarify them to help them put out a tap root! I may be annoyed with them lately but they sure do have a way of helping out the oaks and hickories around here. The BlueJays do a great job at helping out the hazelnuts too come to think of it.
