I mowed the lawn today and was thinking how happy I will be when I can put this chore to bed for the winter. I have been mowing since March once a week. It takes me an hour and a half with the push mower and then I could spend another hour or so mowing with the rider. I could do lots more with the rider but I figure pushing the mower is good exercise too.
Are you still mowing your lawn? How long does it take you? When do you first get out the mower in the spring and how late do you need to mow into the fall?
Mowing the lawn
I'm still mowing...although it been so dry lately, it's not growing much. It still gets raggedy looking because it will set seeds.
I mow nearly 4 acres from the first of March till mid November. We have a Snapper zero radius mower and it takes about 3 1/2 hours.
still mowing here not as much though! we had a hard freeze last nite!!
We start in april and spring we mow mow mow but july n august were dry so just had to mow the chickory that was growing! lol
I mow about 4 acres of my own with a 72in cutting deck it takes about 2hrs
i mow my BIL takes about 15min
I mow my FIL takes about 20 min!
I dont mind during the summer when its warm-but dang it gets cold in the fall have had to mow into late Nov here!!! thank goodness for my carharts!!!
lol, Dori, you're my kind of girl!
Our's could use another mowing, but probably won't get it this fall. We need to get the leftover nails and little bits of shingle cleaned up from the ripping off the old roof just prior to putting on the new roof - what a mess! The hired "man" has done it most of the summer, and his vision of a well mowed lawn and mine are about an hour's worth of work apart. I would do it with the rider, if it had decent steering. The one we have is too hard on my hands and wrists. Hmmm, maybe I'll have to work on that one, much cheaper to get a new mower that I can use than to pay someone to do it for us when said person could be doing farmwork.
My husband will not 'let' me mow! That's his mediating time! If I could just get him to STOP running over the edges of my beds...
I'm hoping my new place won't need any mowing, LOL. I will just have the yard on one side of the house and it's shady. The area between my door and the creek is not very wide (20' +/-) and part of that is pathway. I'll probably have to use the weedeater there, though... around the boulders and potted plants.
Still mowing. Probably will until Nov. We haven't had rain either - so it's not growing much - and I don't have NEAR the acerage. Only 1/4 acre if that much.....
I like to mow - good exercise, can do some serious thinking.....but I'll be ready to stop for a while.
DH does the weedeating and edging.....that's our bargain cause he HATES to mow.....
NC - I can understand how your spouse feels! Aside from raking leaves, it's my absolute favorite thing to do! Sometimes when I'm done (about 45 minutes - I'm a lightweight!), I want to just sit on the corner of my preperty and rev the engine - where do I go from here? [I'm sure my neightbors would be happy for a visit from the tractor, but I'm noty quite THAT bad - yet!]
Kathleen, check out the Snapper zero turn riders...they have a little joystick that you control just like those little wheelchair/scooters that have become so popular. You have an arm rest and just use the stick.
My back, arms and shoulders were always stiff and sore after mowing before we got this...now, it's a breeze.
Just the one with a joystick works...the ones with the big handles that you push and pull hurt anyway.
Melody, Stan has been looking at those. There are a couple of them around here and everytime we drive by and they are in use, he slows down to look. I'll include your review next time we talk about lawnmowers. His youngest daughter's comment was, "Good lord, you've had that one since I was in Highschool!"
I have an electric mower and it's been out around 4 times this summer. I think I'm done. It takes me about 15 minutes to mow my "lawn", which is mostly moss.
I hand mow right in front of the house and that takes about 10 minutes. I use the little murray for two of the yards and down both sides of the driveway and that takes about 45 minutes. I do this about once a week. So I do the "walkable" areas. DH does all the outlying areas and down along the road and my walking paths between the pine trees at least once a month. It could be done more often but he tries to do it at least once a month. He uses an Allis Chalmers 72" cut for this job and it takes about an hour and a half. I could do it all but Miss Alice is getting grouchy and tempermental in her old age so I let DH deal with her.
My yard takes about 40 minutes. I think I start about mid April and finish around the end of October. Early in the year I get a contractor size wheelbarrow plus a regular one of clippings, now it all fits in the smaller one but I mow it to keep the weeds and taller kinds of grass looking neater. My grass is whatever is green and was here when I started taking care of it, mostly quackgrass. I use an old gas mower that is tempermental but still runs if I give it a cooling off period about twice during the job, that's ok, I get a glass of water and cool off too. The clippings are used for mulch in the flower beds and vegie garden although the last batch ended up on the compost pile to provide a bit of green stuff to go with the brown stuff I have piled up.
