Anyway know of a place to get them? I don't want the normal old sign - I would like something witty that gets peoples' attention.
Such as..
We love our children too! Please slow down!!
This is a 'must get' for me before my husband flips out and beats up one of our neighbors.....
Help!
Slow children signs?
We got the county to put some up on our rural dirt road..Do you think it helped? No way!! People get on these roads and think they are set free..Very scary for our pets and children...I have threatened to shoot out tires..LOL

Ive always said i was going to make one myself-slow down children here to corner!!!!
Well hmmmm... not sure what to do! The sad thing is that my neighborhood is really small! I know (didn't say like) almost all my neighbors. These particular ones are the same ones that think we are Satan b/c we have 2 big dogs. Another neighbor had a party this summer and they wouldn't speak at ALL to us. Not that I'm missing anything..
On the other hand they let their 3 yr old ride a four wheeler with someone and race down my road with no regards to the children on MY street. I have a 2 yr old and so does my next door neigbor. Go figure.. It's the 'me me me' world of today.
When my kids were small I lived on a dead end street....we had a dry cleaner's truck driver that would speed despite our warnings...one day all of our neighbors (6 total) told him if he DIDN'T slow down we would discontinue using his company and he would have NO REASON to be on our street!! That worked. LOL Jo
We just now after much effort have managed to get the kids living outside our neighborhood to stop riding their dirt bikes and four wheelers in the neighborhood. My husband has no qualms about having a conversation with people who don't know how to act - nicely I might add. I wish I could help our neighbors to understand how scary it is to have a 2 year old and a speeding car withing 50 ft. of each other.
Get the tag number and report them..It may help for awhile if they are given a warning..

We always slow down for the children and if any animals passing on the road we slow down or stop to let them pass to get off the road but sometime have no choice when it happen pass the last minutes to hit the animal.
When I was 7 years old live in the conutry only 3 houses so I was stand up with my bike do something on my hand on the side of road on rocks no black top so the Big Mack truck hit me and I fall out the bike and roll go to the ditch no water in there so, I did not hear any of it because of that I don't have hearing aid on at that time so I passed out so the lady pick me up to bring my parents house so the man driver so bad nervous and so worried so my mother make a coffee for him so I woke up just few minutes passed out and saw that man's hands so bad shaking hands could not hold the coffee so everything was fine for me just bruises so let him go. I am so glad that I did not get hurt bad or die, thank god for that to save me. I never forget!

I hate to say it but call the cops. These people do not care about their kid so why would they care about yours. We have had trouble here with the little motorcycles using the speed bumps on our street for ramps. They are not street legal. The parents of these kids thought that I should not miond the things in front of my house but did not care to sign a form saying i was not responsible if I hit one of them trying to get out of my driveway.
PS not one of these kids had a helmet either.
Wow Redrose! How scary! That is my nightmare for my son. Thank goodness you were alright though! Esp since it was a TRUCK!!!
Frogsrus, I am with you on the Cops. None of the previous 4 wheeling kids wore helmets and most of them rode adult size 4 wheelers! I actually did call the cops on one particular who would go around 50 mph on my road (didn't leave in my neighborhood either.) I kept calling until they caught her. Her family has since moved too! Ya! I will tell you something funny about that though. Every time I called the Sheriff he would pull in my driveway and ask me questions! Thank goodness the girl in question wasn't a real hoodlum since the Sheriff basically announced to everyone who called the cops! Oh well!
I used to live on a very narrow, curvy dirt road when I was a kid. One time sombody hit the school bus on one of those curves. Fortunetly no one was hurt.
There was a neighborhood over here that got together to make signs. Nearly every house had some kind of "slow down", "speed limit 25" "look out for kids" etc. Each family had different styles and then at the end of the street was a big sign that said "Next time try such-and-such street. The speed limit is 40 there."
I drove trough due to some construction, but was even extra slow so I could read all the cute decorated signs and not hit kids at the same time.
Kip
Sorry, but I always chuckle at the slow children signs. Honestly, the kids aren't slow - why don't they squeeze in an exclamation point so it reads more clearly: "Slow! Children playing"
Same with the slow cemetery signs. A slow cemetery....as opposed to a FAST cemetery? Hmmmm.
More seriously, our previous home was in a (usually) quiet small subdivision, near the end of a cul-de-sac (the entire subdivision formed an "H" with three cul-de-sacs and one main entrance - hard to work up a full head of steam on any street.) Some kids on the street next to hours would throw pool parties and their friends would manage to get up to 40 MPH for the two-block stretch before they turned down their street. I had a 2-year old at the time, as did my neighbor and we lived in fear that one night a car wouldn't slow down for the turn and would jump the curb, taking out anyone/anything in its path.
One night they finally made me mad enough, I jumped in my car, followed the offenders to the party house, strode up to the whole group and announced VERY loudly that if they sped or ran another stop sign in our neighborhood ever again, it would be the cops at the door, not me. Funny how a short, middle-aged, mad-as-a-wet-hen mama can humble the coolest high school kids. Their shoes suddenly became mighty interesting for them to stare at. Lots of mumbled yes ma'ms. And we never had a problem with them again.
You go Terry! My husband and my next door neighbor did that with one of the dirt bike riders. His parents apologized to them and the kid was so flustered he kept asking my husband what his name was - Brad - really hard name too! LOL My husband, although not tall lifts weights and has two big tattoos - one on each arm. I think he scared that boy to death! Our neighbor on the other hand is that boy's teacher! Talking about having someone show up at your door. Again this boy didn't live in my neighborhood.
It never occurred to me about the punctuation on the signs either! That's funny!
You can have the signs made up at any sign shop. you may have to get town, county approval, depending on your local laws. I work in a private community, so we're able to do whatever we want. (The sign companies carry the posts, as well.)
I have always hated the implications of the "Slow Children" signs, too!
I may do that Sequee! We are a private road too so I am going to put it in my yard! I could make one that says "SLOW DOWN or I'm letting my Rottweiler out!" LOL I do have a Rottie but those that know him know what a joke that is! Unless your allergic to dog slobber that is! I still like 'Slow down, we love our children too!'
I kinda like. "Slow Down... Speeders will be Shot" LOL
Hee hee! My DH would love that one!
LOL...Darius, you are such a work of art.
:)
Thanks gardenwife!!! Those are great! Darius I didn't see yours in there though!
Hey, this one would be good for Eyes: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=197&item=3841443666&tc=photo
Hee hee! She's on the back of my motorcycle helmet!
I saw one the other day that said "Deer Cross" and I wondered why they were cross....
Our minister's wife did the same thing as you, Terry. Our church is the last building in town, so kids would use it for their turn around spot and tear around the loose gravel. She was furious because they would go flying out the parkind lot down the driveway just past their house and she had three little kids. We're having coffee one evening and all of a sudden she jumps up, "just a minute!", races out the door and plants herself in the middle of the driveway, feet spread, hands on hips and glaring. Two cars slammed on their brakes and stopped in time. She very politely explained about cars, speed, her darling children, etc. they responded with sorrys, yes ma'ams, won't happen again, etc. and I about split a gut laughing. She comes in, "I'm not a ma'am, do I look like a ma'am?" She looked like a teenager and now getting close to 40, still looks about half her age!
That's great! If I didn't think I'd get hit, I'd do the same thing on our street. People FLY down through here, even the occasional school bus (which I called and reported).
What about speed bumps? Install your own - late at night. :)
or dips - we have a couple of them in town and they do slow you down, after you come down off the ceiling ........ nah, kids might use them as a ramp... bad idea!
I thought about speed bumps! My road is not state maintained so... A couple bags of concrete and viola!
Have you tried taking their pictures? If they know somebody can identify them it might help. Next step would be to tell them that you are taking those pictures for the police so you can prove they were there. Even a phony video camera might help. Still photos can't prove how fast they are going, but a video could. Definitely report this to whatever police agency has jurisdiction, you can establish a pattern of repeated offences that way. Ask them for extra patrol activity in your area.
Good idea! I have a video camera too thanks! I could put copies in their mailboxes so they can see how fast they are going!
Being on a private road allows you to do many things which are not allowed on public facilities.Signs and pavement markings on public roads and ways are usually regulated by the requirements of the 'Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices' in an attempt to make signs uniform throughout the Country.Unless there has been a change, the "slow children" or "children at play" signs were not included in the Manual. The local City or County Public Works or Engineering Departments would be the place to try for help on public streets. My experience has been that signs are largely ineffective if they violate a drivers expectations, such as a left lane exit from a freeway or a 25mph speed limit on an arterial.Speed bumps have worked in some areas, but also slow down emergency vehicles.Law enforcement is often the best way to curb speeding problems.
ncga, I didn't get a chance to read all the responses, but in my experience, signs are not always the best. I bought signs that fold up and I put in my long driveway as we have grandchildren living with us. On your road, I would use the signs, but would reinforce by asking the county or city or whomever takes care of your road, (neighborhood association or such) to put in speed bumps. I know it always slows me down if I see them. I think they are the most effective way to get people to slow down. Hope this helps, Kathy
