This website was opened just a couple of days ago [by the Palace authorities, in view of the ensuing Dasara Festival] and I thought it would interest people here as there are quite a few pictures of scenes of our city and the Palace. Hope it will be liked and enjoyed.

I wish I could share with our friends, but they do not have a web...what a wonderful
presentation...and lovely pictures..
[ my friends husband has often joked that he either had to give his inlaws some cattle..or they gave him some as a wedding gift ] he called it bribery...before they got married..
THis is one of your customs? We thought he was really kidding but maybe not...
On another posting [ thread] Dinu you were mentioning the Turmeric trees...could you tell me if these are easy to grow ? ..I have some on order..am growing Cinnamon right now and later Bay rum.....our zone is 10a which I think yours is ? thanks..marion

Melody,
I'm so glad those letters and this link about Mysore would be helping the budding youngsters in their studies.

peterson89,
It has become 'customary' for the bride's parents to give something 'hefty' to the parents of the bridegroom during/before marriage. That 'bribery' is also known as 'dowry'. This is considered as a social evil and has taken many lives, esp. of the girl. It leads to harrasment and various other related problems as the focus is on the 'material benefit' and not on the harmony! That is the saddest part. Some people agree to a fixed sum of money, gold, or whatever, before the settlement. So, if the earnings of the girl's parents are meager, then there will be a problem ... they have to resort to taking loans which are hard to settle in future. So he will become a debtor almost throughout. It is not a problem for the 'rich'. Yet, there are a few who understand the plight of the girl's side and be within the limitations and agree for a simple wedding or things like that. Esp. in some sects, it is cumpulsory. So, the plan begins as soon as a child is born. If a boy, then he is on the + side! If a girl, the opposite. Savings begin very soon for the big event many years later. But I personally do not like this 'compulsory' thing. But there are some who do not demand too much and that kind are a bit rare. In mine, I did not want to burden the other party just for a day's function and so we shared the expenses. People are too egoistic during such times - they want to exhibit their wealth and status by various means. But in one or two of the states and sects, it is the opposite - the boy's side have to bear the expenses!

Do you mean tamarind? Turmeric is a rhizome.

Dinu - this caught my eye when I was looking at cattle breeds and thought it was so neat. Because of DG I had heard of Mysore - how cool is that!
It won't go to the breed - click on Amrit Mahal on the left side of screen.

Dinu thankyou for your valued explanation of the 'dowry' I knew a little of the custom but thought it had died out...and yes, I can imagine how much of a burdon it would be...Pity not everyone shares your views....
''Customs'' are so difficult to break....
Thank you too on advise about the Turmeric..it is well noting my health is questionable right now..in the past I would have been into my books immediately checking everything out [nursery did not explain] and I had not checked so that is very interesting....[it is outside the USA so perhaps took for granted that I knew] I guess ...I spend more time trying to find out if they are frost tolerant.....my best, marion

Kooger,
You were checking on cattle! That surprises me! That link gave me some idea too. Thanks a lot. The description of cattle is so well written. Amrit [Amrut] in Sanskrit is Sacred Nectar.

peterson89,
Tamarind is supposed to be a tropical tree.
I wish you good health.

Blame it on philomel and growing up on a dairy farm. lol Check out philomel's cattle picture on the photo forum, that's what started the whole thing. :) Although I'll admit to checking out that site before - I'd love to have a hobby farm some day with exotic cattle breeds for school kids to come and visit. I especially love Belted Galloways, Scotland Highlanders, Italian Pimentos (cousin in Holland has them), Texas Longhorns, and Holsteins (of course!) haha!
