The last hurrah
Echoes, wonderful flowers. Cherish them this winter when it's -40 The last photo, what kind of flower is that, (species) and,,, I noticed the mozzies LOL.
Linda in Victoria
That's a prairie flower. You can't grow them in Victoria, Linda. They need lots of wind and a touch of frost to do well. Sorry, don't be jealous.
My records show it as thurberi.

gotcha Echoes. Great pix.
Inanda who has wonderful white aster, crocrosmia, chrysanths, heuchera -dont ask why - blue salvia via echoes from Broots seed - yum thanks you so much - and some other annuals. Garden looks quite colourful still. Amazing for end of Sept.
LOL....I'm sure we are making dem B.C.'ers soooo jealous echoes!! In my wildest dreams!! ;)
Thank you for showing us your last hurrah....you have some lovely flowers blooming! Did you have frost yet?
Touch of frost last night. I refused to cover. If it's over, it's over. Just a touch on the tomatoes and cukes, but soon they need to be pulled out anyway. DH said the cars had ice on them but it only went to 36.something. So much for saving seeds from the Queenie Hollyhocks. I don't think they will make it, nor the Jack Flash silene, which I don't think is as spectacular as pictured. Had one little flower. Ah well, there are so many more out there in the seed catalogues.
Gorgeous pictures echoes. You have a flair for photography that I wish I had.
The camera really helps. Actually I have very poor eyesight, and have to take two or three sometimes just to make sure it's not blurry. Thanks for the compliment.
Great pix echoes. Are you able to grow oriental lilies & have them return year after year? I don't seem to have much luck with them. Only in rare instances does one make an appearance the following year. What is your secret? I try to plant them deeper than the others. Do you mulch them?
This is the first year for Casa Blanca. I have a group of about seven that just bloomed for their third season, and have a couple of others even longer, but they didn't do well this year. Some of my gardens got botrytis(?) really bad.
I mulched with leaves and garden debris, and they got losts of snow cover last year although it came late. They are not planted particularly deep. I think if they are too deep, they would be too slow coming up and getting going for me. They are so gorgeous I'm willing to take a chance on losing them.
Echoes - my Queenie Pinks set seed but not my purples and they all became so infested with our huge clouds of late august aphids that I cut them back so there was no chance of late seed. My queenie salmon didn't germinate well at all but i still have some seed left in the packets I think. Will have to check. Could send you some queenie pink seed if you want.
Love that second oriental, Echoes. Maybe next spring I will give them another try. Tried the CasaBlanca one year & they were just gorgeous. Never ret'd though. There is a possibility that when I dug up some of my asiatics to share with a friend that the CasaBlanca went with them. Never a lack of snow cover here.
Botanus at least I think it was them gave a bonus of five oriental bulbs with my order one year. Now that's the way to get them, and they lived and bloomed again!
I noticed my yellow Queenies are blooming, a slight possibility of seeds there. The flowers start way down, hidden by foliage. As I have them in a big clump, I'm not too impressed with this habit. I didn't expect them to get over 4 feet tall either.
I noticed the same habit, Echoes. But later on the bloom was so prolific that they put on a good show. I had a few that were closer to 3 ft than the 2ft max that was advertised with them but most stayed very compact. I put that down to throwback to the tall ancestors from which they must have been hybridized. If they survive and do well next year I will remove any too tall specimens and only save seed from the ones that stay at the size I like.
I think most of mine are at least three to four feet. Maybe all the rain had something to do with it. I started them early in the house, but they probably suffered from my procrastination in getting them in the ground so late. It is a very pretty yellow. Looks like that's it for any seeds maturing with the weather we're all getting.
very beautiful, echo
First time to see some of the flowers. thank you.
Hi broots, There is a chap on the lily talk group (&coldzone) from Hay River NWT> He mulches with about 6 - 8 inches of sawdust. Someone in Brandon did that last winter and all hers came through. I put a bag of leaves on mine and was so excited when they came back. Thought they were Regale. However, when I dug them up a couple of weeks ago (most of my garden is on wheels) it was Easter Morn, bred right here in MB. That is todays joke. I was so excited at havig a trumpet winter over.
Inanda
Gee thanks inanda. I am going to have to try the sawdust. My DH works at a sawmill so that won't be hard to get. I also tried the trumpets with the same results as the orientals. So glad the leaves worked for you. I keep forgetting to go over to coldzone, I have it bookmarked but there are only so many hours in an evening.
Just saw this thread - beautiful shots, echoes. Thanks for posting them. I'll be curious to hear next spring how the sawdust works out!

Like the cart - do you let the dogs pull it for gardening chores LOL. Seriously what is the vintage on it and does it still have all its bits.
That is the front end of an old farm wagon. It was down the road at the neighbors when we came here about thirty years ago. They were throwing it away when they cleaned up their yard so we took it. The back is collapsing and we repaired it once, but now it will just stay as a garden relic until only wheels are left.
Sorry, don't know the age of it.

Strangely enough this drac which I started inside in February and grew like gangbusters for 2 weeks or so looked like it was dead come summer but I stuck in the ground anyway and it only started growing again in September and actually looks like the frost last nite didn't hurt it. What's up with that and what do you all think I should do with it?
Great picture! The colours all still look nice.
Should look good for a while yet. Nice arrangement.
I love your substitute echoes! :D Love your last hurrahs Ladies!!
What a crying shame, Lynn. Your photos are just gorgeous. Is there supposed to be frost again tonight? Lets all pray there won't be.
I am not going to mention our weather anymore, I promise.
Echoes, you photos are nice enough to be in a gradening magazine. I especially like the one with the old cart and the substitute Japanese Maple.
