Anyone else OVERWHELMED??? :-)

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

I went out to Home Depot today.....they carry them but were sold out! Hmmmph!!

So later tonight I stopped at a local Ace Hardware and had my choice of 3 types. Got the biggest and best one! Now to get DH to let me use his drill! Otherwise I'll be buying my own.

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

You go girl!

Susan

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

We have an Ace Hardware here, too. Will stop by tonight or in the morning!! I'm so excited!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

I'm OVERWHELMED *again!*
:-D
Does ANYONE want a mess of Sweet Potato (Ipomoea) cuttings???? PLEASE don't make me throw these away! I've got buckets of cuttings from the planters I tore apart yesterday. Margarite, Blackie (not so many of these) and a great little compact variety that I absolutely LOVE for window boxes. I have a thread over in Plant Trading...
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/460074/

After I finish with everything that *didn't get done* yesterday, I'll be looking for one of those bulb augers too! :-)

~julie~

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Julie, left a message for you in the thread!

Thanks Terrie...

Julie, ditch the cuttings and save the tubers for next year.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

HI Darius! I did *that* too! :-D There's just something satisfying about *seeing* all those little roots forming in glass jars. I probably won't feel that way when they take over the house, however. :-D

Question, Darius...have you ever started the Ipomoea from tubers? If so, how do you store them, when do you replant, and how?

~julie~

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Okay Julie, I'm here now!

Need to find places for those bulbs I just brought back from the KYRU and have room for Alice co-op bulbs AND still leave room for all those produce seeds I just ordered.

Does anyone have some fennel, either seeds or plants they want to get rid of?

I need just a little bit more overwhelmingness.

Molly
:^)))

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

"Over-whelmed" suggests you are out of control
I prefer "Whelmed"

And never say you "lost" something; it inferes that you aren't going to find it.
Instead, say "misplaced"

I may be overwhelmed but I'm not gonna admit it. LOL

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Glad you made it Molly! :-D "overwhelmingness?" I like THAT! A new word to practice twisting up my tongue. LOL

TLC...ROTFL...I think of "overwhelmed" as being STUCK with so many directions I'm *supposed* to be going and just can't decide which way to go first!

~julie~

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Julie,
That is the best definition I've heard for overwhelmed! Fits me perfect.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Julie, there was some involved discussion about storing and planting the tubers a while back, maybe last year. Try a search here for Ipomoea tubers.

I *think" you store them like any other tuber, and start them in spring in a water glass just like any sweet potato. I stored mine last fall. In fact, stored them so well that after moving, I've never found them, LOL.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Darius,
That is so funny! Something popped into my head as soon as I read your comment. Several months ago, my husband and I took a trip. I locked up the liquor cabinet because I have older teenagers who were home by themselves. I hid the key so well that I have not been able to find it and I have turned my house upside down!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

trunnels... I am also looking for a $100 bill I stuck in a book years ago. I have come to regret when I put things "In a safe place" LOL.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, no! LOL What a nice surprise if you come across it some day.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, last week I transplanted several asters and solidago that came in the mail. This week started out with DH building a new 35-foot long rose bed for me. Roses I've kept potted up since late winter were ready to be transplanted. He tilled the area then he and our younger son edged it with treated lumber. The roses went in Tuesday along with peonies (it oughta be purty come spring!) and I bought and spread two yards of mulch Wednesday.

Thursday I transplanted two Loropetalums and watered all the transplants (again!) Today I dug up several plants that needed to be moved to new beds, got everything moved and more mulch put down, re-set the dry-stack rocks along one side of the bed and hauled off a heaping wheel-barrow load of plants to the compost heap.

Next up is pulling up the last of the garden, putting down compost and straw for the season, adding more mulch to the paths between the raised beds and transplanting several deciduous and evergreen trees shrubs into a new bed that was sprayed with roundup last week.

After that, the new spring bulbs get tucked into several spots and a front-yard bed gets a vigorous weeding, followed by a load of compost and a load of mulch ;o) Then there's new cool season grass seed to get down and watered in.....

So....yes - I'm feeling overwhelmed! And the leaves have barely begun to fall. Eeeeeeek!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

ive been feeling overwhelmed for months!!! i really have to many gardens I must stop this i must i must!!!!!!! im only one small person!!!

Im BEAT!!!

My goodness Terry, sit down for a minute and................breeeeeth.

My day has been made.. For those of you following the thread you know that I've been personally digging composted horse manure into five gallon buckets and them lugging them to the truck, lugging them to the garden and dumping them and repeting the process...well in GA we have this great little publication put out by the GA dept of agriculture called "The Market Bulletin". There are all types of ads and I found the fertilizer section and well.... I'm getting the back of hubbys truck entirely loaded with a front loader for free! And I can back the truck up to the beds and directly dump the manure with the shovel. I'm going Sunday morning and I promise it made my day when she called me back and let me know this great news. I'm so glad I used my brain a little to save my back a lot. :) Five years ago, if you would have told me that getting all this great free manure would make my day..... well I would have thought you were full of it! :)

Susan McCoy

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL Susan! That is great news.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Susan, that is great news! If you like your local market bulletin, you may want to snag a copy of Gardening for Love, the Market Bulletins by Elizabeth Lawrence and edited by Allen Lacey: http://davesgarden.com/gbw/c/673/ for winter reading. It's not her best-known effort (actually Lacey compiled it from her notes after her death), and it didn't receive much critical acclaim, but I think I like it almost as much as The Little Bulbs which is my favorite book of hers ;o)

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Soulgardenlove, Congats on the free truckload! I'd grab that deal here if was available, But unfortunately it's not, So, I still do the '5 gallon bucket' strolls when possible.
I'm one who has a hartime throwing ANY extra plants in the compost, Well, THAT WAS UNTILL THESE PAST FEW WEEKS!! ~ I have the kind of soil that if you 'Took a pitchfork and tried to stick it in the ground' It would only go a few inches 'IF THAT!' My beds got 'Way Overcrowded' this year and in the middle of summer, I became a 'Daylily Addict!!'~Well, With beds being overcrowded as it was, I figured I'd just make a new one and then move a few plants and add a few daylilys YEAH RIGHT!!! Well, I made a '10 by 40' ft. bed and put some of the plantings in there, plus daylilys. Well, I needed to seperate some Iris's, I figured 'Aw, That shouldn't be too bad ( I hadn't really looked at them in a while!) I started to seperate them and found that I had a gazillion little extra's!!!!! Hmmm, Where the heck am I going to put them ( Plus I have daylilys that are coming in!) I went around and around and around the house and COULD NOT FIND A SPOT!!! I thought 'ok' make another bed and take some of the extra plants out of the old beds! YEAH RIGHT AGAIN!! So now, I check out what I need to 'THIN OUT' and 'OH MY GOD!!!! WHERE DID IT ALL COME FROM AND WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH IT!!!!! Well, gave at least ( And this is no lie) 500 plants to people I knew, I put some for postage here at DG and yes, I actually threw some in the compost pile!!!! Now, I still had to replant all the other Iris's and Daylilys, So I made 2 more beds and put the DL's and Iris's in, plus the other two where I had taken the extra's out, And Guess What?! Still not enough space!! My other plan was to take a row of tree's out from behind a stone wall I had made a few years back as they were not doing well, Now mind you, These trees have been in there for about 5 years and there were 5 of them! Talk about a job! What fun that was!!!! :[
But, Got them out and had a whole long new bed 'Great'!! Now what I needed to do was a get a HUMONGUS westeria out so it wouldn't block the sun ( This too was in there for at least 5 years) So, With hubby helping me, "7 hours" after we started, We had it out!!!!!! Now only problem was, We had one more tree to take out ( A Mullberry) so it too, Would not block the sun ( You have to take into consideration, When I first started gardening, I wasn't thinking about the 'Down the road, filled in effect once things grew in! Will NEVER make that mistake again!!!) Anyway's, I now need to move the mullberry and 'Once Again" NO Place to put it!!! So I had this one 'Rock Garden' that was too close to the corner of the porch area and figured 'Hmmm, Why not take the plants out and put the tree there! ~ Another 'Fun Job'~
So of course while I take all the plants out of there, I need a place to put them, Soooo, Lets make another bed around the protruding stone on the side of the house!!!!! ( I swear I must love 'Self Torture!!') Well to make a long story on this bed short, I got all the plants out and replanted in the 'new bed around the stone' took 'All of my rock/ stone edging out' and started diging down a bit and guess what?!! I hit ledge!!! Dirt goes deep enough for plants, But definately not good for a tree!!! Well, Ok, I know, I'll get rid of that maple tree thats taking over the side shrub bed and put the mulberry there! RIGHT!!! I had this Honeysuckle vine that was kinda close to the maple and I let it go a bit wild ths year ( I thought it was cute watching the birds play in it and the Hummngbirds feed off it and such, Especially seeing the blooms at the top of the tree/s and alongside the blooming shrubs, Yup, It was really neat looking, TILL I HAD TO TAKE IT OUT!!!! OH My God, That vine was EVERYWHERE!!! It found tons of rooting sites under and inbetween the shrubs, It Wrapped itself ALL AROUND the maple, the mock orange, And the purple sand cherry trees!! I worked on that area untill dark! And that was just to get the Honeysuckle out!!!!! Now I had to do the maple tree! Well, It's now after dark, But hey, I got a night lite! So, Here I am 'Trimming the branches off, And it's getting harder and harder to trim as I'm getting to bigger and bigger branches, So I figured I'd use the 'Eletric Saw' and trim off the branches! Well, I get everything all set up and almost kill myself tripping over the cord, I get ready to start cutting and Whishhhhh, It starts pouring out!!!, I thought, You know, It's been a bad day, So before I end up cutting my fingers off, Or having a limb fall on me, Or better yet, Get electricuted using an electric saw at night in a downpour, I best quit now!! So I bring everything back in, Go out and collect the rest of my tools, And now I'm Black and freezing!!! " Time to GO IN for the night!!!!' Next day, Hubby starts early on it for me, I thought it was going to be tough getting it out, But I had no idea JUST HOW TOUGH IT WAS GOING TO BE!!!!! I have a hard time sleeping at night, So hubby figured he'd let me sleep a bit late and work on the tree by himself for a while, Well, I woke up to see him standing over me SWEAT DRIPPING OFF HIM!!( I wonder what was going through his mind at that very moment, But I don't really think I want to know!!) He said, I put the chain around the trunk of the tree and pulled it with the car, And guess what ~ IT DIDN'T BUDGE!!!!! AND I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON IT FOR HOURS! I could tell by the expression on his face that it wouldn't faze him in the least to set a bomb off under the tree! AND So, Out I went with him to try and get the dang thing out!
Well, We 'DID' get it out, But in doing so, It took all my weed block, Ground cover, And stone wall with it!!!!! So here I am, It's almost dark again and I'm just finishing putting most of the stonewall back togeher! Another all day and half the night 'fun job!':{
Hmmmm, Now all I have to do is Add some compost and dirt to the huge hole where the maple was, Rotortill it all in, dig up the Mullberry and replant it in the hole and finish the stone wall puzzle and then I can go back and fix up the bed that has the ledge in it!! Then I have to clean and facume the car because it's got all dirt on the back seat and in the trunk from all the plants I moved and then go through all my yard sale items in my garage and figure out what I'm going to do with them all because I didn't get a chance to have the yardsale I was planning on because I was too busy with the yard stuff trying to rush and get it done before it gets too cold but I have to do something with it all because I'll need the space to store all my gardening statues and such for the winter!!! Oooops forgot, I have to move all my fish to one pond and winterize it before the cold hits ( Suppose to be in the 50's during the day next week and 30's at night) Have to put some straw on the new plantings~ 8 BEDS WORTH!! Also still have 5 more tree's to move if I can find the time, Hmmm, I wonder what kind of brainstorm I can think of now!!!! Just letting off a bit of that "OverWhelming Feeling" to join in the post! Jeesh, Gardening can definately test the limits of ones Sanity??? LOL!!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Darius...I think I'm going to do that search as soon as I'm finished with this post. I'd much rather know for certain how others have stored their tubers than to lose the ones I have. And as for the misplace-ment of the $$$s LOL I've been there, DONE that, and am STILL looking! My kids tell me not to worry...it'll make a nice surprise for the person who finds it while cleaning out my things when I'm gone. :-D If you knew the state of my "things" you'd understand why that is SO funny! I have SO many books, notebooks, and other misc "hiding places" that it would take THEM a life time to find it!

Terry...I can feel your exhaustion, see the sweat and I can see the beauty of that rose and peony garden in the spring. I'm thankful when I get that 'overwhelmed' feeling, at least with the garden, that I have the ability to see past this moment and picture the scene as it will be. My DH looks at the tiny starts of bushes and the mounds of soil covering the things I've planted and tells me he's not sure it was worth all the work. :-) So one of the better things about getting THIS involved in my garden is hearing him say "WoW! I didn't think THAT was going to look like THAT!"

Yep! Sit a spell...take a deep breath...and enjoy the view in the future sense! (Here's the 'pat on the back' you deserve. (~Terry~))

notmartha Reading your post...I can SEE you're overwhelmed! Those last two words say it ALL! ;-)

Susan YEAH!!! YIPPPEEEE!!! HORRAH!!! FREE POOP!!! :-D
(But a just a little warning here...DON'T scratch hubby's truck bed with *your* shovel...let HIM do it! hehehehe Don't ask me how I know about that one! LOL

Iris... I have one thing to say (OH, I have a LOT more than that...LOL) No one *over* the age of 19 should take that job on...and all the way through your post, I could see your DH's face! You just described making a yard that would have taken a normal person at *least* five years to complete. HAT'S OFF to IRIS!! Hang in there...but don't *kill* your DH in the process! LOL

~julie~

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I have to admit I didn't read Iris' post... I have a very difficult time reading posts that are not broken into small paragraphs... these old eyes just cannot follow it.

Has nothing to do with Iris, or anyone else who posts like that. I'm sure I miss some good information. Sigh.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

IRIS said, "Jeesh, Gardening can definately test the limits of ones Sanity" but after reading her post I think it should read.......

Jeesh, Gardening can definately test the limits of ones INSanity!!!! ROFL. There's no way in this world or the next my DH would do all that moving of trees, shrubs and vines especially if it meant using an automobile to get them out! I say, 3 cheers for Iris' DH!!!!! What a man!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

That's ok Darius...I had a bit of hard time reading it, too...but there was NO way I was going to miss a post that dealt with INSANITY! :-D

Brenda...I was thinking the same thing about my DH as I read through Iris' post, too. I could see Eric *doing* it...but I could also see him booking me into the local mental health insitution at the same time.

Iris...I really meant it when I said that job was *way* too much for any of us over the age of 19 to take on. You win the "JOA & JWD" (Juile's Overwhelmed Award & Job Well Done) awards for this season...just *thinking* about moving all those rocks...not to mention ALL the plant materials overwhelmed ME...and I didn't move a muscle. Thanks for putting a different perspective in *my* life!

Now! We got a *hard* freeze last night...and with all the thinking of preserving my plantlife in the yard, I *forgot* about the houseplants I had sitting on my screened porch! Uh oh! I haven't even had the nerve to peek out there yet this morning. :-( Poor little things...OH well! :-) If they didn't make it, that just means there'll be a LOT more room for NEW stuff, right? :-D

~julie~

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

This thread sure made interesting reading. I too am overwhelmed or whatever, just trying to keep up with my way too large garden, with my way too old body. However I am ready to get back out there after taking a week off.

And i better get busy as it is cooling off rapidly night time. The days are nice in the 70s but I haven't heard a weatherforcast for more than a week so don't know how long the good weather will last.

Have several clumps of daffodils to dig and replant., Didn't order any new bulbs as knew I had all these to get dug and replanted. Have to finish moving the tender plants into the GH so better go outside and get busy.

Best of luck to the rest of you with all your fall work. Donna

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Donna...I think the "Way to big" in the garden arena fits most of us here. But it sounds to me like you've got it pretty much under control...at least YOU know what to *do* next! ;-)

~julie~

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

darius, Don't worry, You didn't miss much on my post, I was just letting off some 'overwhelmed' anxiety...I feel a whole lot better now! LOL! ~Sorry about making the post so long, I tend to ramble at times but I should have known better, It makes for hard reading for some people.
...langbr, Yup, You might have the "Insanity" part right, I think this gardening stuff gets to me sometimes!!LOL!~ Also, I'm 'stubborn as they come' And wont usually give up on something untill it's done!! ( check the bottom LOL) My hubby's pretty good about helping when I really need him, He didn't help on the rocks or getting the honeysuckle out that was something I could do myself, But when it comes to the bigger stuff, As with the 'tree's', I can definately count on him to help! I can't say he's 'Overjoyed' about helping, But he does it anyway, I Thank God I got him! Of course, If it was durng the work-week and he wasn't around, I'd do the best I could on my own anyway (Very determined!)
...Juiie88, Thankyou, I get award's, I feel great! LOL!! What I wrote was only about a quarter of what I'm doing but if I would have written it all, You'd be reading this post for about 3 days! LOL!
You also reminded me that I need to take my houseplants off the screened porch also ~ Does this stuff ever end??? LOL!
...Rutholive, Now there's the perfect fraze for me too! Way too large Garden, Way Too Old body!!! But for all the hard work that we all do, And all the ackes and pains we feel doing it, You have to admit, It helps keep us in shape and sure soothes the soul at times when you look upon the unique beauty that you suffered to create! And it sure is a 'great feeling' when you take that time to sit back and look around at all you've done and see it all in bloom! Good luck with planting your daffodiles and all your fall yardwork! I have a whole bed of daffys I need to seperate and replant also ( Don't think it will get done this year though!)
...langbr, Juiie, I started at 10:30 this morning, Hubby was at a meeting and came home ( And once again helpe me) at about 12:30. It took untill almost dark "once again" to get this tree out and replanted where we took out the maple, But, ~"IT'S DONE!!!" LOL!!

Thumbnail by IRIS
Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

All replanted, Feed, mulched, watered, And the stone walls almost finished!~
Too bad it came out too dark! But,Then again, It "Was" almost dark at the time I got finished!

Iris from looking at your moved tree in the dark, I see it is a weeping mulberry. I had one at the old place and hated to leave it but at that time just before i had my 3rd hip joing surgery, I couldn't manage anything that took a lot of digging.

Here at this place I planted a white fruited mulberry for the birds and a few for me. also last year planted a contorted mulberry. It is growing nicely, sure has large leaves.

Glad you got yours moved and all the rest of the work you've been doing. Donna

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Ohhhh...one of these days I *have* to get a weeping Mulberry. We have the wild shrub/bush/trees, but I'd love a weeping one.

Iris...aren't you TIRED *yet?* :-D

~julie~

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

I've got a couple of shrubs (mockorange and red-twig dogwood) that I'll need to move next year. Having a fence installed this week and needed to wait until that was done first.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Hey Brenda...could you give a little info on the Mockorange? How fast does it grow? And what light conditions will it tolerate? I got several "cuttings" from Farmers this past spring...and I'd like to know what to expect and how long I can wait to transplant them to permenant locations. (They were *really* cuttings when I got them...more like STICKS for me to root on my own. If places are going to sell 'cuttings' it would be nice if they TOLD their customers! And it would be *really* nice if they gave the poor sap some information on how to get them rooted. LOL)

~julie~

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Gosh, Julie, I'm not too sure. Mine is in it's 2nd season in my yard. It was a 3-gal potted shrub when I got it about 2-1/2 ft tall I'd guess. It's now about 5 feet tall and the literature says it will get to 8-10 feet tall. I put in the wrong place (not thinking about mature size and the new fence will interfere with it).

Here's a link to my variety in the PDB

http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/66509/index.html

Says full sun to part shade is ok.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Rutholive, Sorry to hear about your surgery and that you couldn't take your Mullberry with you, I can imagine how you hated leaving it behind they are such beautifull tree's!! I got quite a bit of the rooting on the one I just took out but if for some reason it doesn't make it, I'd definately get a replacement! I have a fruited mullberry also for the birds, But don't have a contorted one, What does it look like?

Julie88, Yup, I agree, You need a mullberry, There are sooo pretty! Alway's tired and SORE, But, Want to get as much done as I can before the cold weather hits.

Langbr, I've got a red tig and a yellow tig dogwood, Don't the tig's look awsome in the snow! I just moved two of them to a new spot this year, They wer'nt too bad for moving, Is the one your movng kind of big?

Julie88, I have two MockOranges, One is about 4-5ft. tall and I have it in a spot that it gets part sun/ part shade and it seems to do quite well, It was loaded with flowers this year, The other one is about 6 ft tall and I need to move it, Wished you lived closer, I'd give it to you. That one is more or less in 'full sun' and the one in part shade seems to do better.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Ok...so we'll say the mockorange is a moderate grower! :-D Brenda, that picture in the PDB is gorgeous, I hope mine will be half as nice.

Iris...I wish we lived closer too...that way maybe I could hire you and your hubby come work in MY yard! Seriously, thanks for the info. I've got a lot of shaded / partly shaded spots that I'd love to put shrubs. For the semi-shaded areas, I've planted a couple of SummerSweet bushes, and for the deeper shade (but bright light) I've used Black Snakeroot. I'd love to put shrubs ALL around for a bit of privacy...but since DH does the mowing (and he LOVES his *huge* diesel lawn tractor, I'll have to gradually expand my planting areas when he's NOT looking! LOL )

~julie~
