Man, this gardening thing is TUFF! I dug new beds and planted and weeded and babied and weeded, and planned all summer. Of course I ordered LOTS of stuff for fall planting.
Guess what?
It arrived! :-) And I'm totally POOPED!
Tell me, did YOU take on more than you could handle (comfortably)?
Is anyone else *ready* for winter? :-D I could use the vacation, personally.
~julie~
Anyone else OVERWHELMED??? :-)
I'm almost there with ya!
I've spent the last two growing seasons relandscaping our yard after we tore it up to build the house. I'm one that likes everything done right away and hate disarray, so I try to get as much done as I can each season so that it will look good sooner.
But, I'm wearing out quickly and I still have hostas, bulbs, lilies and trees coming.
I am planning my winter projects though, and I'm looking forward to some inside time sewing, scrapbooking and beading.
JoanJ...After we get ALL thus stuff done, we'll have to talk "sewing" and etc...right up my alley, and I'm sure looking forward to seeing my sewing machine again. (Even it's only to sew up some cotton seed collecting bags. LOL)
Thank goodness, I'm *not* alone.
Oh, and in the meantime...TAKE it EASY!! I need someone alive to talk to! ;-)
~julie~
Its going to be a long winter....do you know how many rolls of paper towels I have to monogram before next summer's BBQs?
And to top it off, Martha will be incarcerated the whole time- whatever will I do with all of my extra time once the 24 pack of Brawny is finished? sigh
I had to chuckle at this, started early and still to much to do! Denise
You guys are making me feel SO much better. Misery LOVES company!! :-D
Daisy...you're going to monogram "paper towels" ?!??? Now THIS I have to hear! Details PLEASE. And if you don't have time to give them now...at least stop back and leave me a "smiley"
so I know you're still around, ok?
Denise...I'm so glad you stopped in. Your 'chuckle' is worth a million! (We've got frost in forecast for Thursday night...Bensenville isn't *that* far away! ~evil grin here~ )
~julie~
hehe- you think I am crazy doncha! lol
I will tell you about this later- I have to go finish marbling our toilet paper rolls in Autumnal Tones.
;0)
To be honest, what is winter, Julie? We have 2 more months of hot here coming at least then 2 cold months then the spring tomatoes go in the ground. I am exausted too.....
hehe- you think I am crazy doncha! lol
In a word...YES!! :-D
Somebody remind me to check in on daisyavenue when we find out what institution she's in. LOL
~julie~
See, I told ya this is a BAD time of year!
Funny....Daisyavenue doesn't LOOK crazy....hehehe..BUT...painting paper towels???? Jo
No, Jo. Embroidery. The toilet paper is hand painted. ;0)
LOL! I'm assuming you are joking, but then maybe you do monogram paper towels. Or maybe you are watching too many Martha reruns. We'll know that's the case when you start monogramming the SAME roll of paper towels over and over.
Julie, I'll take it easy so we can talk sewing this winter. I've already begun. I'm sewing a 3 foot scarecrow. Actually, I started it last fall and didn't get it done, so I'm trying to finish it this year. I don't have very many fall decorations, and I want some real bad. Fall is my favorite time of the year. I'm tired and ready for a rest and the colors are beautiful, and the air is crisp.
We are predicted for a hard freeze tonight. When we got home from work DH picked all the winter squash and I picked all the green 'maters. Now they are all in the kitchen in boxes and I gotta figure out what where to put them. Actually, the squash are in the garage, just the tomatoes in the kitchen. All I've got left to harvest out of the veggie garden is the carrots, and I'll let them stay awhile yet.
While you all are snug by the fire, we are out there with the hoes and shovels in our "spring" gardens. It is time to spread manure again. I can finally think about lettuce in a month or so when it is finally cool enough. The bell peppers do not look as if they are melting. The annuals go in in December. If I do not chop the Carolina jessamine soon, I will have to find a new route to my front door.
Daisy, ya'll let me know when you get time from the garden to do that painting and embroidery on those towels. I will come help lol. (Hey ya know the stuff comes quilted! I saw it on the TV!! ;-) )
I'm glad to see others admitting to being pooped! I still have stuff coming in and see no end to it until the fall coop bulbs arrive. I'm actually looking forward to a little down time. This is the first year I've done so much end of the year planting. Usually I get revved up in the spring. Whew! This year has been a lot of work. I don't know how to sew but I will be working on my mosaic planters, stepping stones, etc. I wanna see a picture of these handpainted toilet paper rolls and embroidered paper towels!
Alright time for a confession.....I'm still planting coop daylilies and some auction wins. 125 bulbs arrived last week and that's my "small" order. The coop hosta still need permanent homes too. I'm dreading the arrival of Alice's coop bulbs plus the lily coop bulbs and 2 other bulb orders I've placed!!! Ugh!
Terrie - I know what you mean about the Spring sprint, but Fall has always been my favorite planting time. It's always so darn wet here in spring and the wind is force to be reckoned with during March/April so I really enjoy Sept. and October planting.
And if that isn't all good enough I done went and ordered the same bulbs today from a auction seller that I just bought the same bulbs from 2 weeks ago!!! Sheesh! I think that qualifies me for paper towel embroidering and toliet paper painting for sure!
Hi Brenda. I'm glad the cannas aren't coming until March! I truly think I've lost my mind! I have to tell ya, joining DG has made me an obsessed gardner.
I KNEW it!!! There's only ONE kind of person willing to do monograms on paper towels...and I'll bet you anything she's even done a few panty hose "tatoos" also. And if not, WHY? (DaisyA, You *do* have an embroidery sewing machine, right? It's the *only* reason I can see *anyone* monograming paper towels. :-D :-D )
As for those of you who don't know what winter is like cuz you live in places like CA, (ahem....frogs) Let me tell ya, I wouldn't be nearly so tired if I had a few more months to get it all done. :-D LOL
Terry...I KNOW you're as tired as I am...you *have* to be...we're still getting things traded and planted and ...and...and...oh yes...the co-ops! MAN, I'm glad the cannas won't be here until spring. And after, what's *not* to admit...I am getting OLD! ;-) )
JoanJ...you're on. We'll have that sewing discussion over in Home & Crafts or whatever the forum's called.
Jo...I thought you got that wrong...but I wasn't sure myself.
PAINTING TOILET PAPER!~???? Rotflmbo
This I GOTTA see!
Thanks everyone for making me feel whole lot better about feeling so tired.
~julie~
Frogs and I belong to a California quilting bee where we wile away the long winter months sewing quilts with needles honed from palo verde trees and batting made from dryer lint.
The winter just flies by!
Daisy you're such a riot!! ROFLMBO
Daisy...You must have grown up in the midwest. You put your resources to such good use! POST pictures of that quilting bee, please! I MUST see the technique used to get those needles...and MY GOODNESS another use for all that dryer lint! Here, I thought it was only good for helping to start our log fires to heat our houses. HAhaha
Brenda...you forgot something. I suppose that you're going to tell me that, just because you live in Kansas, everything gets done by 'Dorothy' and 'Toto?' :-D So you aren't into the 'hurry, hurry, got get it planted' stage yet, huh? ;-)
~julie~
Plants in boxes all over the house, plants in pots all over the sidewalk, half dug flowerbeds in the yard. . . Hubby says these ARE going somewhere else for the winter, RIGHT? He's so good about it. Doesn't even like plants himself!
Oh no, Julie, I'm definitely in the "Hurry! Hurry!" mode, just not getting it done fast enough. I figure if nothing else I'll take 2 or 3 full days to do nothing but plant.....no meals, no kids, no husband, no work, no DG (GULP!! Did I say that?).
Sylvi74...I can picture that. No...I can *RELATE* to that. Yesterday, I finally managed to clean off my picnic table where all the "cuttings" and experiments were taking place over the summer. Unfortunately, most of them were successful and NOW they have to come into the basement or spare bedroom for the winter. I can't bear to let them freeze after they did all that work to propagate for me. :-D
Brennie! NO DG?!???! That will *never* do! You have to pace yourself, girl. Must save enough energy to type "LOL" or ROTF just so we know you're still with us, too!
And Daisy...I've been wondering all morning if I've (we've) been led down the garden path by a Martha 'wannabe'...~chucklesnort~
~juile~
(Goes off thinking "did I plant those poppies where I wanted them...WHAT the heck are echinops, where did plant THOSE? mumble, mumble, mumb...mum...")
Yeah, mumble, mumble, what IS that plant, I don't remember ordering this, did I plant this or did the squirrels move it, mumble. . .
LOL Sylvi! Then comes..."Why did I order THAT?"
~julie~
Why did I order that and WHERE am I going to put it!
Yep! That's what I'm muttering to myself today. :-)
Who KNEW Echinops could grow SO large? Certainly not me...when I bought them I thought they were like Allium! Oh well...looks like I'll have hedge in the side garden after all.
~julie~
Years ago I visited my oldest sister. They lived outside of Denver Colorado. We went upstairs to one of her daughters bedrooms. The girl was very interested in growing plants. There in the middle of the room was a pile of potting soil over three feet tall. She slept in a closet.
What a story! Why did she sleep in the closet?
Because there was no room for a bed in her bedroom along with the pile of potting soil she had potted plants everywhere. Actually some of her sisters also slept in their closets/ I guess it was a cozy spot.
That is just the most amazing image you just put in my head, George! Thank you- it will keep me smiling for ages!
George...if I'm not careful that will be MY story! LOL Only problem is, I'll have to move the cat out of my closet in order to sleep there. I guess there's always the bathtub, eh? :-D
~julie~
I just placed another order with Wayside, because SOMEBODY had to go and tell that they are having another sale! I can stop any time I want to. . .
I placed an order with them Saturday night!
*I'm* not LOOKING!!! :-D I don't think my mailman could handle another set of boxes...I know I couldn't take his teasing anymore. He says the next thing he's going to be delivering to me is full irrigation system. And I don't think he's talking soaker hoses...more like the setups you see on BIG corn fields. LOL
~julie~
Awwww you guys!!! I have $50 gift certificate to Wayside that I PROMISED myself I wouldn't use until Spring. I *WILL* not look!
Brenda -- $50 would go a really long way right now! This is a great sale (some things 80% off) that only lasts until midnight tomorrow (I think). But, don't let me tempt you (snicker, snicker).
TERRIE!!! PLEASE stop!!! I can't take it! 80% off!??? Geez! Those are the kinds of sales I built my garden on in the spring. No! There's frost advisory here tonight! But...but....but...NO! (I hate arguing with myself! :-D)
~julie~
Oh Julie, great thread! I tell myself every year I'm gonna slow down, do less, certainly order less...yaeh right!
Oh my aching back!!! LOL
Thanks Mr bear. :-) Appreciate you dropping in. I'm so glad to see SO many of my DG friends take on more than they intended. The problem is that there are so many people here that are more than willing to share ALL the news of SALES with us. LOL
~julie~
Don'tcha just hate...I mean love those people who share the SALES??? :-)
