I'm Devastated

Allen Park, MI(Zone 6a)

I just heard that Hostess Bakery the makers of Twinkies have declared bankruptcy. What are we going to do without Twinkies, not to mention Ding Dongs and Snow Balls.
Whats this world coming to???

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

What's going to be next? Ball Park Franks? Jello? Spam? Kraft Macaroni and Cheese? Swanson TV Dinners? All of us baby boomers should wear black arm bands.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

My dh just said dolly madison makes my zingers-WHEW!

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Life with no Twinkies????

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

Guess i could stock up on Twinkies. Don't they have a shelf life of 20 years? (jest kiddin)

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

I don't think we'll see the end of Hostess cakes. Bankruptcy doesn't mean they are out of business, just not going to pay their debts....LOL.

BTW, I saw on The Food Network, a lady took frozen strawberries in the can and some plastic bowls and spoons and a box of Twinkies and they had Strawberry Shortcake at the beach picnic. By the time they decided to eat it, the strawberries were thawed and the cake and whipped cream was already there....hmmm, novel idea...ha, ha.

I've heard that deep fried twinkies have become popular. It gives me heartburn just thinking about it!

Cape May Court House, NJ(Zone 7a)

Oh No........ I guess I better stock up on those ORANGE (halloween) SNOW BALLS, not to mention Ring Ding's too!!!!

Weezing, I think I saw where someone deep fried them. Seems like some restaurant serves them. Yuck!!! Just the thought of that turns my belly.

Now if you're from the Northeast, you might remember Drake's cakes. I think they are still around....Yankee Doodle cupcakes, Devil Dogs, Funny Bones, now I wish I could get ahold of them here. I used to go to the day old store and stock up for my freezer for the kids for their lunches. Also, got Dreikorn's bread, that was the best!

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Thank goodness....Moonpies are still safe!!

When my kids had packed lunches (over 30 years ago!), back in the midwest, I used to pack Li'l Debbie snack cakes. They came in a box, individually wrapped at a lesser price than Hostess products. This winter, my two sons, now in their mid to late 30's began carrying lunches to their worksite, and I volunteered to pack them. (deja vu).

I searched for Li'l Debbies, but couldn't find them. My husband said he'd never heard of them. One day, at the grocery, there they were! Same package with L'il Debbie's smiling face on the top. The original price has been labeled over, so I'm sure they are much cheaper in the lower 48, but what a blast from the past! The grocer gets a shipment every two weeks, and within a week, the shelves are cleaned.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Yep, afraid they priced themselves right out of the market place with so many good "imposters" out there..........now when someone tries to get my chocolate Bon Bons, it's all out war!!

Not to worry...theres always Godiva!

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Weezing, I see the Little Debbie products all over down here and yep they are cheaper than the Hostess yummies.

This year for the first time I noticed the deep fried Twinkies at a food booth during Oktoberfest and deep fried Oreos too. Honestly they don't even sound good to me.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

I went to the lil debby plant and i got a extra treat becuz the owner said i look like lil debby!! we were with the pathfinders(boys n girls group) on our honor trip and the leaders daughter was named-debby she was upset ;) cuz i was the look a like!!! KIDZ!
The plant is located in TN at or around the southern missonary college(sda)

I luv lotz of lil debbies yummies!!!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I'll bet those L'il Debbies are really fresh when you can get them right out of the plant!

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

We had a booth at our county fair selling deep fried twinkies and I, like you all, didn't think they sounds good at all. DH bought one and gave me a bite. WOW are they good. Not like anything else you've tried. Twinkies will have to survive just to supply all the fair vendors. Lou

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Lou, I'll bet you're right, but I don't want to try them... I might like them too much!

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

Frankay,
I think you are right about the shelf life of Twinkies...it has to be at least 20 years!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Those Hostess Pies used to scare me. Back in the 70's, I bought a cherry pie along the Alcan Highway that looked like it had been there a long while.

Allen Park, MI(Zone 6a)

I think they found some Hostess Pies in the pyamids in Egypt
maybe Cleopatra liked them.

If a packaged food product is still good after 20 years, it really means it won't support "life" as in the bugs stored products get.

If it doesn't have enough nutrition to support bug life, how do you think it affects ours?

When I was a kid, way back in the forties, we had Yankee Doodles three in a pack for a dime. I especially enjoyed them in the winter when the cream in the center would become solid from the cold as the delivery man would leave the order outside my grocers store before he opened for business. I would run to the store when he opened and buy a pack of Yankee Doodles, take them home, eat the cake first and leave the cream for last as it was a solid from the cold, enjoyed with a glass of milk. Ahhhhh! Man that was delicious. The cream was sooo goodddd!

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Tplant, I liked to freeze them and then eat them....nothing like them and devil dogs. :)
