Looking for Long pine needles

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

STILL LOOKING FOR MORE

I am still looking for more long pine needles. I have received some from two members but need more. Any help would be appreciated. These are for my Christmas gifts.

I am making pine needle baskets and am looking for a source for long pine needles. They need to be 12 inches or better. We have pines here but not the right kind. I need a large quantity of these and will gladly pay or trade for them. They can not be picked off the tree. They must be gathered off the ground as the ones on the tree still have sap in them. They must still have the lilttle cap on the end which encloses the top of the needles.I posted this in the crafts forum but am still waiting on a response. I know this is asking alot but I will make it worth your while. Please if anyone feels so inclined to help me out please email me and we can arrange something. Thanks for any responses.

TJan, I know that pine trees in Flordia I've seen have very long needles; that might be a good place to ask for help. Good luck!

Yes, I've heard that too but I'm afraid to ask any Floridians after all they have gone through. I think they may have their hands full right about now.

There would unfortunately, sure be a heck of a lot of those pine needles on the ground right now though ...

I live in Atkinson county, population 6,500 people... and 25,000,000 pine trees. Most are the longleaf pine, altho many are slashpine.

a bale here costs $2 (bout the size of a bale of wheat straw) of course if would probably cost $50 to ship.

dunno what you'd like to do but if I can help lemme know.

Oh wow, I think that is more then I want. I use them for basket weaving and they usually come in bundles if I were to order them. Thanks anyway. A bale is probably used for mulch.

You might try http://www.geocities.com/basketbulletshome/index.html and see if they have what you need.

Thanks George, it's a great site but they don't show what pine needles they have. I did find some on ebay so I am waiting to see about those. Tks again

Hey - I have about a million pine needles here in north Georgia. I just had a whole bunch of pine trees removed from my woods, and the tree guys left me the pine tree tops and branches. Do you want the fresh green pine needles, or the dried out brown ones?

Maybe we could trade - and you can send me a tumbleweed? :-)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Heheh, I could send a tumbleweed but you wouldn't want it. I use the dried pine needles that have fallen from the tree. They need to still have the cap attached to the top. There is usually three needles to a cap. I will show a pic if I can. We could work a trade of something other then a tumbleweed though.

ok, I'll get together a bunch this weekend and measure to see how long the needles really are. I was thinkin they would be easier to bend when they are green, but will see what I can find. I'd love to see a pic of the basket you make with these.

You collect them when they are dried and then soak them, drain them and wrap in a damp cloth. If you don't do it this way the sap will cause mold and rot. I will send a pic when I get one done.

Pine needles??? Are you SURE you couldn't use sack full of 4 1/2" long ones? Or maybe 3" ones...you could always sew them together to get the LONG ones! LOL

Obviously I live in a reforested area of PINE trees and few scrub oak...pine needles are a way of life here. As are pinecones, sand, and acidic soil. :-D (I just looked down at my desk and what did I see? PINE NEEDLES!)

My DH bought me a gorgeous pine needle basket a few years back. Such intricate work. It must me time-consuming to make them because mine is a small basket and he paid a bundle for it.

Show us some pictures of your baskets...I'd love to see them.

Tombstone, do you need me to go take a picture of my pine forest floor?

I garuntee it'd be cheaper for me to rake a few up than buying them online.

Go for it. I think that on ebay they are 9-10 dollars a pound. But, you can't rake as you will get the one's on the bottom that have started to decompose. Not good. I need the ones that are laying on the top. I know that I am asking alot from you all but this is what is required. Thanks.
