Your Thoughtfullness Will Mean More Than A Gift!

Louisville, KY

If you are like me, retired, with a limited income, You might find this 'gift giving' idea helpful.
With my sons, grandchildren and close friends, I try to come up with a gift which is from the heart and reflects something of myself. Last year the grandchildren, even the baby, received my Papa's little book of SOUPS which they enjoy and have helped me make. One summer I taught a course in Folk Ways in conferences at Wooster College and and Lee's College. We made Prairie Dolls, Old Time wooden push/pull toys, Candles, Quilting, Tin Punch, paper cutting with German Scherenschnitte, Homemade Soap, Rootbeer and other tasty eats. etc. I have made gifts of several of these.
Think of something you do well and know that it will be appreciated. Your Thoughtfullness Will Mean More Than A Gift!

Similar idea- I copied my favorite recipes (mostly chocolate!) and put them in individually decorated notebooks for nieces and nephews.
I also make or trade for most of my other holiday gifts..I think that everyone "wins" this way.

One year I gave two of our nephews each a 5 lb bag of flour, yeast and my grandmother's refrigerator roll recipe (they had to supply the water, egg and oil). They both said it was the best gift they got that year.

I think one of my best Christmases was a time I was out of work. I made home-made gifts for everyone and it was just wonderful!
