....do you think "hey, this might NOT be a good idea?"
I heard on the news last night that one of the deaths from IVAN was a boogie board rider. While millions were fleeing from the storm, this guy decided to "ride the wave." In the middle of storm, he rode his last wave. Broke his neck and died...
I dunno maybe its just me...but if millions of folks were leaving, boogie boarding wouldn't be on my mind....
Just me, Lisa.
at what point..
Mw either, but then I am a parent and no longer immortal. I used to think I was though and have a few scars to prove it.
Did they check his blood for alchol or drug content?? Also there are people who have serious mental illinesses but it's against the law to force them to do anything, like get in a car and leave the area.
There is a headset amongst certain surfers that they have enough "experience" with the ocean waves to handle the 'Big Ones
I have a well developed self-preservation instinct that prevents me from doing this sort of thing on a 'good' day.
Lisa, there is a big dam here that controls the water to the Nantahala Gorge, famous for its whitewater. They were afraid the dam would break from all the rain Ivan dumped, and decided to release lots of the water... but first sending teams down the river to evacuate any kayackers or rafters. They actually had to arrest some who refused to get out of the water!
Too bad they couldn't arrest surfers like the man you mentioned.
Some people are just stupid. This guy was actually from Colorado!

As his wife sat reading on the beach!
This type of stunt is the same as suicide to me. For a few minutes of thrillseeking he left a widow and a daughter. And he was no kid. At 43 he should have been capable of showing at leat a modicum of common sense.
And may I add that I don't know a single surfer who would be so silly and Costco sells boogie boards to any idiot for under $40.
Shame that Costco doesn't sell brains or common sense for $40!
Darwinism at work.... those aren't repeat stunts!
cuts in to the stupid people gene pool doesn't it? It sure is hard to believe how stupid some people can be. What were they thinking?
If he was thinking he'd still be alive.
good point zany..
My SIL is a "surfer dude" and has surfed all over the world, but thank goodness he has sense enough to read the water and takes safety seriously! Of course, he's 51 which I think is a little old for this, but I guess once a surfer, always a surfer!
When hurricane Frances' winds started picking up, our paper printed a picture of two boys on skate boards holding a sheet between them for a sail, flying down the street. My reaction to this was, "Where are your mothers" I guess it's just a "macho" thing.
