HI Yumiko. It's time that you surfaced. I hope that you come and visit with us here.
We'd love to hear about your garden.

Nanaimo, BC(Zone 7a)

Hi Lilypon and Liz!
I jjust came here and quite surprised found my name in the thread!

Lilypon
Thank you for making thread for me. That was so nice of you.
I used to live in Peace river ,AB which gets -45C in sometime winter.
I did not mind the coldness but I could not stand for long 6 months winter.
How cold would it be in your area?

Liz
Finally I came here. It is so nice to see all garden loving people.
The only thing I would complain? about this web site, it is so imformative
that I can not get off from computer. Just like drug.
By the way, Did you get a lot of rain last night?
We had a lot of rain and big thunder here.
When I was walking after supper,I saw black ugly clouds.
It was very cold, my breath was white.
Maybe we will have another heavy rain.
thank again

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

We usually have a month (or two) of temps around -30F.......thrown in, of course, are those *other* days where temps can be much, much colder. Saskatchewan has a direct link to the North Pole some years...... last year we hit -52C. :b I've known of two occasions where we hit around -100F (but that was with windchill). We've also had many surprisingly mild winters in the last 10 years. I think you will much happier in the land of *almost* no snow yumiko

Poor jagonjune will be in a state.....another Albertan has taken up residence in Lotus Land! ;)

We had a couple from Winnipeg in the library the other day....said they come to Moose Jaw every year for three or four days (listening echoes??? ;) ) This time they were asking about our winter temps, economy, etc. They want to retire here.....love the setup of the town and the size.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Please let us know what you are growing yumiko and, almost as importantly......Do you have a digital??? ;)

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Lilypon,

what happens to those who do not have a digital camera? Do we evaporate?
hm...... have to come in to listen to Stewart MacLean. Wish I'd had him for an english teacher.

Today moved 5 hostas. Most of my garden is on wheels as I keep making changes. Do others do this too? now it is raining. Bother.
Inanda

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

lolol ;) Seeing people posting is top on my list.....but I do love to see their gardens as well.

note I did say "almost as importantly...... " do you have a digital?

Lilypon, you crack me up! That message about having a direct link to the NorthPole" had me laughing out loud, so much so that even my hubby had to come look over my shoulder to see what I was giggling about. :D

Ah yes, Inanda. I think we are definately at a disadvantage and in danger of "evaporating" if we don't get ourselves a Digital. I am presently "working" on my hubby and with any kind of luck, I should have one in the near future.

Welcome Yumiko. It IS like a drug, isn't it? Once I get going on these DG forums I can be sitting here for 3 hours before I know it. But you won't regret joining. Tons of information here and fun too. I sure am glad I'm a member.

HI Lilypon

Yes, I should post my garden photos.
I started gardening in '95 when I moved to Canada. Just beacause I wanted to eat
Asian vegetables which were not available where I was living. Most of them did grow well, but some
did not. When I moved to Vancouver Island, I started planting fruit trees.
3 years ago, we built a house here. This is the final place so I started to buy ornamental plants.
What do I have in my garden?
wasabi, myouga, fuki, udo, lots of roses.etc... I was just stupid to collect so many roses
not knowing so much. I definitely will post the photos later when I figure it out how to do it.
Do you have snow yet there???

Hello Inanda
When I was in Tahsis, I missed seeing Luna. He/she was there one day before I was.
I will come up there sometime in October. If I see Luna I will report to you later.

Hello Old flower girl
yes it is..Especially after I wrote something I will keep checking again and again.
My hunband is tired of me sitting at computer, but it is so nice to see new people
which has same interests.

Liz!!Liz!!!
Guess what!
KBS (was it KGS?? I forgot) you sent me has bud.
Thx Thx Lv Lv

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Yumika welcome to DG's. Glad to have yet another BC'er AND an islander!

I'm south of you by about an hour and a bit. I live in Victoria by the university, just blocks from Heatherbelle. If you're ever in Victoria, contact me and we'll get together, I'll show you my garden, well, it's mostly brugs. This is a great forum to learn, ask all the questions you need, I still do. Don't worry about grammar or spelling, i usually have to edit a couple of times before I send it to catch all the errors I make. I type fast, just not well.

Welcome, and looking forward to getting to know you.

Linda in Victoria

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Yumiko I'm looking soooo forward to seeing your garden...you have many plants I've yet to discover...if you have trouble figuring out how to do it we can help you, just let us know. BTW (by the way) do you grow Lemon Grass??? I love it and it's impossible to find here. p.s.shhhhhhhh never ever say that word (s**n**o**w) at least not until December!! I heard rumours *it* might be about......but hopefully far, far, far away from here!! ;)

OldFlowerGirl when I first joined I didn't have a camera either.....even then I was constantly begging people to please post pics of their gardens. I love looking at what I can and can't grow.......the added bonus is you get to see such varied terrain (Saskatchewan people, as you know, hunger for different views). p.s.DH (darling husband) says you are still a rookie (he had a chuckle at your post too)...you'll know how dangerous this place can be when family starts blocking your access to the computer (and asks if you still know them) and sunrise tells you that you should have gone to bed hours ago!!. ;)

Hello MG99
Nice to hear from a local neighbors.
Thank you for inviting me to your garden. When I go there, sure I would love to see
your garden.
I live higher elevation, we have a lot of rain. Last two days, tons of rain.
From here to Victoria, it is only over 100km something,It should be warmer there for sure.
Everytime I go to Victoria in spring, lot of flowers are already blooming which are not
bloomed yet in Nanaimo.

Looking foward to seeing you in the future

Yumiko in Nanaimo

Nanaimo, BC(Zone 7a)

Lilipon,
I bought Lemon grass from Richters couple years ago.
http://www.richters.com/
http://www.richters.com/Web_store/web_store.cgi?product=X3680&cart_id=2455716.8460
I planted outside, it could not survive winter.
Are you looking for cooking?
Do you have superstore(mega grocery store) or any Asian grocery store in your area?
You can find there.
Lemon grass are very cheap.Good for Thai food recipe such as green curry, tom yum kun soup.
If you only enjoy lemon scent, I recommend lemon verbena.
http://www.richters.com/Web_store/web_store.cgi?product=X6620&cart_id=4249238.8618
This has very pleasant fragrance and also survived winter here.
I will try to post some of my garden plant.

What I grow mainly right now is 7 and 5 years girls and 1.5 years boy.
They keep me very busy.

PS I am not sure if I can put other company's URL.
If I am against the DG rule, please let me know

Welcome Yumiko. I can understand your not wanting 6 months of winter but it does give us more time to reflect and plan - that is the glass half full instead of half empty. Tell me about growing wasabi - is it difficult? Is it an annual? Where would I get seeds/plants. I love the stuff.

Believe it or not I was actually born in Vancouver and moved to the prairies. Turns out I couldn't live at the coast because of asthma. My lungs obviously need to be freeze dried every year to keep on working.

Oh and a note of caution - there isn't anything Pam(Lilypon) can't or won't grow zone 3 not withstanding. (Is that what they meant by the not withstanding clause in the constitution??LOL)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOL Lynn.....I won't grow a Wisteria or a ....... hmmm.......I was going to post a zone 9 Magnolia tree but I do believe I have one (in a tiny pot). ;)

Thank you so much for the link Yumiko...I will be ordering one from them next year. Your other garden will be keeping you very, very busy......I loved those years!!! (mine are 16 and 19 now........yikes!!)

DH and I love a number of Asian foods (love the fresh revitalising aromas).......we will head to an Oriental shop the next time we are in Regina. :D

edited to say I also love any herbs that have a lemony smell as well :D

Hello Jagonjune.
How is your asthma? When did you move to interior?
I grew up close to the Ocean. When I was Peace river I felt like I could not breath.
I needed to see ocean. People moved from Interior says they felt closed in
surrounded ocean and mountains.

My first wasabi plant was given from Japanese university in Nanaimo.
They have agriculture, horticulture extension department and tested
growing wasabi.
Some I brought plants back from Japan, some I bought in Comox (vacouver island).
There is seed but it is very hard to save. Planting in the stream make better quality
wasabi, but I grew on the land. They are doing ok. They are not annual.

I am not sure about their life expetancy.
Do you know wasabi paste sold at grocery are mainly made from horseradish?

PS I remember the 500km road from Peace river to Edmonton
That was very loooong. Everytime I go to Edmonton, I packed my car.
What I miss in Peace river?
Northern light, almost midnight sun, and Moose meat.

Hello, and, welcome, yumiko.............hpy gardening.....Elaine

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Lynn you were born in Vancouver??? She's been holding out on us girls!!!

Nanaimo, BC(Zone 7a)

Hello Roselaine.
NIce to know another local people.
Enjoying sunshine today?

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I dunno if "where you are born" means much. It's amazing how many times on different documents you must list your birthplace and I often wonder why. I was born in Toronto, but moved to Edmonton at age 2 and where I spent most of my life. (which, I might add, is considerable, LOL) Nahh, I consider myself a westerner after all these years, no matter where I was born. I have never even visited Toronto (that I can remember anyway).

Yumiko, you sure are interesting to listen (read) to. So many different plants and foods. So glad you joined our litttle section of DG.

Sunshine today, folks, after a week of nasty rain. I love it. Now maybe I can get out in the garden and do some pullin', diggin' and trimin'. Yee Haw!

Welcome to Dave's Garden Yumiko! I'm a Torontonian, and live just outside Toronto now. I just love the west coast though, its very peaceful and scenic. Good luck with your garden and especially good luck finding time for your gardening now that you're a DG addict like us....lol. Hey, wait a minute, we're SUPPOSED to be gardeners first aren't we??? LOL

Yumiko, welcome from Campbell River. Glad to see some more Islanders here.

Nanaimo, BC(Zone 7a)

Hello ceedub
I think Toronto has one the the most beautiful autumn in the world.
Do the leaves start changing colours to red?

Hello brugcrazy.
I saw your "war of the roses" photo and was wondering where you live.
It looked like from departure bay area In Nanaimo.
The island across from your house is Quadra island?
Sure that was beatiful photo. You have beautiful garden.
Nice to see you

Yumiko, the leaves here have only started changing a very little bit so far. You can feel it coming in the air, but today's fooling everyone and will be about 28C here - Indian Summer for the last full day of summer. And I'm stuck at work ... sigh.

Yes, that's Quadra Island right across from me. We look at Cape Mudge and the lighthouse.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Cape Mudge and the now noiseless lighthouse. How is that going to affect boaters Linda?

I have coast guard friends who are frantically upset about this, and the other lighthouses that are to be silenced.

Totally OT. I'm a very dedicated wannabe straw bale house person. Echoes told me today that one is being built in a subdivison!! near her village. Have to go see ASAP.

Maybe that is where my plumeria will live for the winter. In Echoes warm kitchen. Will have to ask her.

Yesterday we had warmest day of summer 30C - today back to fleecy weather.
Inanda

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Inanda - I have a friend in eastern alberta who built the first true modern bale house in this province. She's an artist and the house is amazing. The things you notice most immediately are the true quiet and the incredibly deep window wells. Almost big enough to curl up and read a book or fill with all kinds of plants. It was quite an adventure for her to find the right builders and craftsman to take on the project.

Yes Yumiko I know our purchased wasabi product doesn't come close to the real thing. I think most westerners would spontaneously cumbust if they had a spoonful of the real thing in their mouths. I can't handle a lot of it; but a little goes a long way. When you say it does better in a stream - does it need running water or would a pond be ok? does it require a lot of sun? how old does the plant have to be before starting to harvest?

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Yes Pam I was born in Lotus Land - so was my older sister. My mom's folks emigrated from Devon in England and wound up originally in Calgary. You can imagine their first experience with Calgary winters. That's where my mom was born but they departed at the first opportunity and settled first in Vancouver and later in White Rock where Grandpa built their house (a master carpenter from the old country) Our asthma and dad's military career combined to bring mom back to the prairies in the late forties and she's stuck it out ever since.

Both of us are now fine at the coast. Sis is not bothered by asthma at all any more and mine is well controlled with bronchial dilators. Amazed myself when I actually became a runner (well think of geriatric runner) at age 54. As long as I stay fit and somewhere within 10# of my ideal weight the lungs continue to work pretty well.

jagonjune, there's hope for the rest of us yet ....

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

yumiko - you have reminded me of someone from Japan who makes such inspirational containers and combinations. I have missed her postings this year but you might want to check out the member page for TomTom and the threads she started last year.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

aren't they wonderful Lynn? I love when she posts them.

Nanaimo, BC(Zone 7a)

It is very interesting to hear about people's heritage and culture.
I will check tom tom's page later.Thanks.

First of all, I am not wasabi expert, I don't know so much about it.
But If you have further questions, I am willing to ask some growers in Japan.
Wasabi is grown in stream. Almost like rice field, but it needs to have some flow.
I am not sure it can grow in a pond. Wasabi requires very clean cold water.
When I saw jinseng( probably wrong spelling, expensive korean carrot)farm in interior BC,
I thought they are growing wasabi. They use tarps to grow wasabi too. Wasabi requires an environment with inderect sunlight, such as the tarps used for growing jinseng and a relatively wet environment. The roots must be in a continual flow with a mixture of oxegen so they do not rot. If you grow it in the dirt, the same is required of the shade and the soil should be sandy and kept moist. I suppose that the best conditions would be that similar to where ferns grow in the forest, with a damp loamy soil.
They do not like strong sun shine, severe hot wheather either. Lot of them grow in Nagano prefecture
where had winter olympics in Japan.
BC westcoast is a perfect place to grow wasabi. It is an expensive product, yet very small.Cheaper for shipping.
I bought some wasabi from here.I heard there is a Taiwanese owned farm growing it in the Comox area.
How do I cook wasabi? In the shops they have root(It is actually part of stem) ,take the thin skin off,
and crush gently. For crushing, best one is made of sharks skin.It has lot of dimples.perfect to break cells to
get aroma. Beacuse I don't want to pull out plant I just eat young leaves. pour hot water on leave, shake it hard to
ger aroma and spiceness and put them in a jar with soy sauce.
Good with rice, or sushi too.

It is very cold here.
Almost all Canada now have strange wheather.
Do you think summer is over now?
Thank you for reading my sentense.

yumiko

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi yumiko...I just saw this thread today. Welcome to DG! I used to live in Victoria, and have been to Nanaimo many times...it's beautiful! There's a good Mexican restaurant on a hill downtown...I'll try to remember the name of it. How are you liking the city so far?

I've enjoyed reading all your posts just now. I didn't realize how wasabi was grown...I just had my first taste of it last week. Yikes! :-) It was actually scary, it was so hot. Maybe it was actually horseradish..??
The rest of the sushi was fine, especially the octopus.

I miss the long summer days of northern Alberta too. :-(
Keep in touch,

Shannon

Nanaimo, BC(Zone 7a)

Hello spklatt
I know the restaurant, although I have not been there yet. It is not a place to go
with small children.
Real wasabi taste different than paste. It is hot but very refreshing taste.
No octopus ? Didn't like the taste or image?
Georgia strait has 40-50 times richer plankton than average ocean.
Plus some other element make lot of sea creatures giant.
Octopus, sea urchin here are quite big. They are very tasty to me.(^ ^)
When I bought octopus at grocery, people behind me made noticeable distance
between my food and them.(^ ^)

How do I like here? I love very much.
I came from big city but Nanaimo is good size for me.
Kind of rural setting, but not too much. Perfect place to raise children.
Yes, I do love Vancouver and Victoria.
Sometime I wish I could live there but housing are just expensive.

I just wondering ,can you see northern light from there?

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

HI Yumiko, welcome from Pakistan.

Nanaimo, BC(Zone 7a)

Is it afternoon there?

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Nanaimo, BC(Zone 7a)

Gumlla, I tired to grow tube rose for years and now I am kind of giving up.
Are there any special technique to grow?Or do you think this is too cold to grow?
How is your tube rose fragrance ? I wish I could smell them.
They are beautiful.
